Amazing place to stay!!!spacious cozy room. Delicious breakfrast.Fireplace!!! Thanks to Theodoros,Demetra and Carolina!!!The horse riding and the lake were perfect.Mr Demetris had great expertise and knowledge.
Great for animal lovers: the dogs and cats are lovely and up for a cuddle. The owners are very friendly people, breakfast was lovely and the room very comfortable. Unfortunately we were only passing through to the north, I would have loved another night in this place and to have gone riding or birdwatching. Definetly recommended!
- High quality structure, rooms made with stone and wood.
- Good breakfast (not a buffet) with homemade options and local delicacies.
- Our room was quite small. The drapes were not practical - very small and almost transparent. I would wake up really early.
- Relatively minor yet bother some issues concerning room maintenance: the bathroom door would not close, the shower was partly broken and sprayed water everywhere.
- breakfast was served upon request (each guest would then receive a plate of goodies). However, we found out that certain delicacies were only provided if you asked for them specifically (e.g. buffalo butter).
- the dining room is rather small and there are no other facilities where you can spend time.
- it was kind of an off-season trip and most of the personnel was away most of the time - so if you needed something, you needed to call.
We had a four night stay in a superior studio room at Ixnilatis, and chose it for its location for a visit to Kerkini, the reviews and its pleasant appearance. The staff there were very friendly, and noting we were keen nature watchers, booked a boat trip with Nikolas a local birding expert (he gave us a trip over 3 hours from 17.00 to just gone 20.00 with close up views of wildlife and views of a fantastic sunset) - highly recommended. Breakfast was tasty, with local specialities. At night time marsh frogs could be heard, thrush nightingales, scops owls and insects; during the day other birds such as corn buntings and orioles could be heard. The lodgings have two friendly dogs and three cats, who would greet us every day.
We had a wonderful 6 nights staying here. The rooms are a good size and very comfortable and the bathroom was a very good standard. The location is lovely with views down to the lake and the mountains beyond. Everyone we met was so welcoming and friendly and looked after us very well, especially Sophie. There are many birds and animals around the property, the dogs treat you like old friends when you come home at the end of the day and the bee-eaters flying around the trees were beautiful. We were also visited by a little owl some evenings and there are horses, goats and water buffalo nearby.
Breakfast is amazing, every day there is bread, honey, peanut butter, jam and the rest is a surprise- sometimes fruit, sometimes eggs, cake, pancakes, cheese, ham, French toast etc etc.... My husband has to eat gluten free and they made special arrangements for him.
The hotel is about a five minute drive into Kerkini where there are places to eat and a few shops. The supermarkets are very small and basic and do not sell very much fresh food so if you want a good choice you need to go much further afield to Sidirokastro. It was very cheap to eat out in Kerkini, a main course, side dish and half litre of wine for two was only around €22.
We did a boat trip out on to the lake, and this was a highlight of our visit. The bird life is amazing and the boats take you close to the nesting sites in the drowned forest, it was a magical experience.
A few things to be aware of....you need a car as there are no shops, bars or places to eat within walking distance. The kitchen in the room is very basic, ok to make a sandwich and drinks but not really equipped for cooking a meal. There are mosquitos (although not as bad as you might expect given the proximity to the lake) so go prepared. The rooms do not have private outside space....you can sit outside your door and enjoy the evening sun and lovely views, and there are a few picnic benches scattered around the garden but if you like your own outdoor space for sun worshipping this isn't for you.
All in all we had a brilliant trip, we came to Kerkini for birdwatching and it did not disappoint- the area is beautiful, the people were fantastic and the bird life was amazing. We will return.
