Positives - The view from the grounds of the hotel and the terrace of the restaurant - gardens were well kept - friendliness of the lobby staff.
Negatives - The Swimming Pool - restricted hours of use 10am to 6pm - water level too low - not clean - open to people not staying at the hotel for a small cost
Pool Bar & Snacks - poorly stocked - no local beer - only cocktail available was a mojito - no snack food (told to try the shop at the hotel lobby but no snack food there either).
Room - very basic, old and shabby - not soundproof or bug proof (despite wearing earplugs we had hardly any sleep during our two nights here) - TV noise from neighbour on one side and loud talking from neighbours on their terrace on the other side until after 3am!
Mattress on beds covered in plastic which made a loud noise whenever you rolled over.
Air conditioner effective but very noisy
Charge to use the safe in room
Charge to use wifi
Very basic options at the buffet breakfast
Twenty minute walk uphill from the town centre
An incredible place to watch the sunset.
Make sure to get an upper floor room as far from reception as possible. There was a sniff that the management might be getting lazy in some small regards but even so - this place was clean and the grounds are lovely. Bathe in mozzy spray if you want to use the bar area (the only, and tiny, WiFi area which provides the little biters with an all-inclusive deal...)
A great view from the hotel but thats about it.
Hotel facilities and rooms are just too old and needs urgently some refurbishment.
The staff well should i call guest? Are watching TV instead of doing your check-in or eating the buffet breakfast instead of attending you in the restaurant and so on...
The guest room was very dirty, the TV not functioning as well as half of the lamps in our room.
The swimming pool, well dont count on it there was not enough water and it was green, very disgusting.
They say they have internet service if you pay for a card but it is only available in one area of the hotel and the cards were not available during our stay ("no more internet cards" that was our answer during the 3 days there).
Conclusion book in Cuban casas you will get a much better experience than in hotels.
We stayed here for two nights as part of a tour around Eastern Cuba. Our room was spacious with two small double beds and clean with a terrace from which to enoy the sunset (doors difficult to open). Away from our room, the the views are certainly stunning and the sunsets are spectacular, which is why you would stay here in the first place (there are only two hotels in the area). The dining room is in a separate building so the i-phone torches helped when there was a powercut (over the whole valley not just the hotel). On the first night we had a buffet. There was nothing really for vegetarians so I had a cheese salad with boiled potatoes. On the second night we had a la carte (I think the hotel decide on the basis of the number of people staying) which was adequate and had a vegetarian section. The pool was not relaxing, which was a shame in such a beautiful area. Non-residents are allowed in at a cost so it was crowded and noisy with loud thumping music, coupled with a new gazebo being built using an angle-grinder to cut wood rather than a saw and with no thought of health and safety for the children running around the pool.
There is little choice of hotels in Vinales, so we ended up in La Ermita. The location is beautiful, the gardens, restaurant and balconies offer great views of the valley and mountains of Vinales. The hotel is about a 20 minute walk from the village center. As it rained during our stay, we could not use the pool.
The room was not spacious, had two single beds, a TV and a desk. All looks very basic and not very well maintained. A window in the terrace door was broken and replaced by a piece of badly-fixed wood. The terrace doors could only be closed with a lot of force. The room did not look very clean. Probably some work had been done on the doors and nobody bothered to clean the floor or terrace furniture afterwards.
The bathroom is very simple and dark, the shower was one day very good, next day hardly any water came out. We stayed for 2 nights, but the bathroom was not being cleaned. We did get new towels though.
Use of the safe is to be paid. Internet connection extremely bad and only at the bar or restaurant.
As it was very cold at night, we needed to use the blankets. They looked very old and dirty, were really appalling. The matresses had plastic covers. This gives an unpleasant feel and did not add to a good night sleep neither.
Breakfast was mediocre, plates and cups were not sufficient for all guests, staff almost invisible, food uninteresting, just like the entire vibe of this hotel.
Just basic. Pity, could be easily so much better.
