This is a lovely old hotel that lacks some modernity but is genuinely nice to stay in. We had a room overlooking the river. It was serine and quiet; large and quite well appointed. No aircon. so a bit warm. Nice bathroom. Good service in the restaurant for dinner and breakfast. Lovely dining room. You need a car here, I think. Easy access Schaffhausen and riverboat trips.

I have been staying here since Monday morning and I am leaving tomorrow early in the morning (Saturday). I am here on business in Schaffhausen and this hotel was minutes away. I chose it because of the good reviews and because it claimed to offer free wifi. Sadly, the wifi is not free. However, they did give me most of the time here free. I only paid 12 Francs for 72 hours. The wifi in my room on the second floor has been steady, although I have to VPN out of it to get any real speeds. That means their provider is most likely throttling things.

At any rate, this place is beautiful. The main building, which is home to the restaurant is almost 400 years old. It feels old. Not in a stale way, but a historical way. The staff has been everything you would expect: friendly, generous, polite and professional. They typically do double duty with the front desk and the restaurant, but I have not have had any trouble with waiting when ringing the bell at the front desk.

The restaurant is phenomenal. The food is amazing. I felt like I was a guest judge on Top Chef. It certainly earns the expensive price. A decent dinner here will set you back close to 100 Francs. That probably explains why there are expensive Mercedes and luxury cars out front during dinner. Breakfast was free and better than expected. There is the typically bread, juices, yogurts, etc. However, they also provide eggs and bacon made at your request, which were perfectly cooked. My only grips was yesterday morning, the place was infested with fruit flies. Nobody seemed to care, but it turned me off of anything other than the eggs and bacon. Thankfully this morning the pests were no longer there, although I chose to stick to the eggs and bacon again.

The room is quaint. I do not have a desk to work at, instead it is a small half round underneath the television, which incidentally has a decent channel selection including CNN. The wardrobe is small, barely fitting a weeks worth of clothes. I did not mind though. The bathroom is large and the shower is a dream. Mine is a dual raindrop/waterfall shower and handheld sprayer. The enclosure is probably large enough for two. The water heated up almost instantly and the pressure was sublime. Nothing is worse than inadequate water pressure in a shower. To be frank and share too much, the shower was so good I found myself taking longer than normal.

All-in-all this has been one of my most favorite places. Perhaps it is the way the staff made me feel like I was someone to be catered to. Perhaps it is sitting next to the river while dining. Either way, if it was not for having to pay for the internet and those darn fruit flies, I would have given this five stars and recommended it to even the most noble of travelers. The Alte Rheinmuhle is truly an old world charming destination in its own right.

I stayed only 1 night at this hotel due to business reasons in Schaffhausen. The price Ive paid was to high for the offered service. I had a huuuuge room (which I really didnt need for only 1 night) and I have to admit, the room was clean.
The breakfast choice was very limited with no fresh fruit at all. The staff was trying to be helpful and yet I felt they were overchallenged with my requests. Had to pay 8 CHF for 24h WIFI and had no connection when I was in my room :( which I see as a rip off.

We stayed at the hotel for two nights just after Easter. We asked for a room with a river view, an attic really, but a view of the river. The evening meal was expensive, I guess that is because you are charged Swiss prices, the same can be said of the room, we have stayed in 'better quaility' rooms at cheaper prices, even with views of the Rhine. Breakfast was nice, not too much choice but nice. Would I go again, probably not, mainly due to the cost of everything.

Big disappointment due to the real poor service provided; we went for a romantic weekend, booked an exclusive double room and been placed in a room with separated twin beds and view on the street / internal parking lot. Although the hotel was almost empty, no alternative accommodation has been provided.
Manager and employees are not at all flexible or client oriented.
Breakfast was also really poor in terms of choice and quality of food.
Definitely not worth the price you pay, we definitely don't recommend..
