I visited this hotel for the Carnaval in Ambato. Since it was Carnaval, I kept my money in the room, fearing that I might lose them in the crowds. Unfortunately the money got stolen from my room.
The reception refuse to do anything. My friend who is local heard the manager discussing the robbery with the cleaning ladies, and heard something about 100$ bill, so apparently they knew that the lost money was few 100$ notes.
Moreover, water pressure is not strong at all, room phone was not functioning, and I was on the 5th floor (no elevator).
10% more expensive if you want to pay by card.
Would definitely avoid!!!
I was GRANDPAcking through the Central Highlands and stayed at the Colony for 2 nights.
I chose the Colony Inn because it was near to the Bus Terminal and I knew that I was catching a bus from there to Alausi … I wanted to be within walking distance of the Bus Terminal.
I paid US$20 / night (Single Occupancy) for a Double Room with Cable TV, Hot Water Ensuite, and Breakfast.
The ensuite was OK too.
The Colony Inn room was better than the rooms that I had in Banos and Tena.
The wifi, however was still very bad most of the time and, on many occasions, I could hardly load Facebook. I fell back on my own Claro Smartphone Data Plan on many occasions.
I am an American living in another part of Ecuador. I stayed over a week in this hotel. It is downtown with parking. Very clean and safe. The staff is very responsive. Nice decor. Good 2 egg breakfast with bread, coffee and juice included in the price. ($15 single, $28 double) It is mostly used by Ecuadorian businessmen that like a little comfort. It is about 30 minutes to Banos. The owners are there most every day and are very attentive to your needs. They are world travelers as well and have learned how to run a hotel properly I believe in part due to their travels. Next to the hotel they are adding suites which may be available spring / summer 2010. I highly recommend this hotel!
