The grounds at RWI is the best part of the property. The front staff was either very helpful or not at all. We had to ask twice for wash clothes and a do not disturb sign. We requested a valet for our luggage to check out, no one showed up. We were on the third floor and there are no elevators. The few of the beach was great from our room. Our third call to the desk was to complain about our water being brown. A service guy came immediately and drained the hot water tank. The wait staff at the Pelican Bay was slow and seemed disinterested in life. Plan on spending $75 for lunch for two people. Bikes are free but our chain fell off before we got off the property. The front desk girl was nice but had no idea how to put air in the tires ar fix the chain. Another issue was the beach chairs. The beach concierge put the umbrellas up each day and reserved chairs for owners or for families who paid him. He did this at 6:15am and we were told we could come down at that time to reserve our chairs in the front row or sit in the back if we didn't get down in time. There is also no official food and beverage service at the beach. The noise level was low which was great since they have two pools and the restaurant.
The only suggestion is if there had bette lighting around the resort. I tripped once because the path to the building was uneven and not well lit. So definitely keep a flashlight while walking after sunset.
Tip: the beach isn’t good for snorkeling so if you want to snorkel from shore then it’s not the best choice. Also the nearest grocery store is about 15 min away and the street gets dark. So you may want to rent a car if don’t mind driving on the other side of the road. We took cabs or mostly walked but that could be a hassle for some people
The quick answer is yes. What an incredible property. It is meticulously maintained, including the beautiful grounds, pool areas, and buildings themselves.
In terms of the layout, Building 1 is truly oceanfront, with Building 2 being one back from the water, but you are still charged oceanfront rates. Buildings 3 and 4 face the pool and bar/restaurant, which may not be the best choice for those who want quieter surroundings. Building 5 is is the middle of the property, after which Buildings 6, 7, and 8 are towards the back and face the quiet pool. It is definitely quieter there, and the rates are better in these buildings as well.
Housekeeping does an outstanding job. The room was absolutely spotless and all housekeepers were cheerful and friendly.
The restaurant, Pelican Bay, was decent but we ate there only once and found a number of better alternatives off-property. As is Pelican Bay, the bar is adjacent to the main pool and has a steady crowd, day and night.
The beach area fronting the property is generally regarded to be on one of the best stretches of Grace Bay. It is absolutely spectacular, with sugary white sand and turquoise water that has to be seen to be believed. The friendly beach attendants will have your beach loungers and umbrella ready early each morning.
In the hospitality business, the highest compliment you can pay a property is to return. Royal West Indies is every bit as wonderful as we remembered it to be, and we will never stay anywhere else when we return to TCI.
The grounds were lovely and there was a nice restaurant/bar on premise that had good food at reasonable prices. But, the staff gave the impression they were not happy to be working there and the service was extremely slow. (However, Guion & Joel who were working on the weekend were very pleasant and our meal arrived much quicker).
Lastly, this was my 4th trip to Turks but first at RWI and this time I was bitten a significant amount of times, primarily around the feet and ankles. Not sure if this was Noseeums, or something else and where I got them. But never had this issue before.
Several reviews said that the Wi-Fi was bad. However, we had 4 bars in our building and there was also Wi-Fi on the beach which worked fine. The TV used the cable company and had several channels to choose from. The room was very clean and well decorated. Housekeeping came every day to change out the towels and make up the bed and clean up The dishes. All the rooms have king badd's, microwave and a refrigerator and freezer. The A/C worked fine, and there is a ceiling
The resort is not that close to the nearest downtown and shopping area, but it's only about a mile walk along the roads to get there. There are several great restaurants in the shopping area and a grocery store. We had a rental car, so that wasn't an issue for us. They also have free bicycles and Kayaks and Hobie cats.
We did not dine on the resort, but all of the other staff seemed to be very polite and friendly. There was no problem getting lounge chairs on the beach as well as umbrellas, no charge. If we had to come back, we would definitely stay here again.
