The resort is unique and you can read my ITN Jul 2014 article on page 19. It's tops for good divers, but you could enjoy snorkeling, birding or just reading a book. Food is outstanding. And the experience is like none other

Layang Layang dives are mainly deep dives. I caught a school of Hammerhead sharks at 40m (max you could go with the DM) and shallowest dive was at 20+m. The rest of hammerhead sighting were either solo shark or 2-3, not a school at shallower depths. Surprise sighting of thresher shark up close, for a few dives. Other sightings include...

I assume that if you are reading this you are thinking of diving at Layang Layang ... do it. Despite applying in under the 10 days required for clearance by the authorities (I believe it has something to do with the Royal Malaysian Navy detachment on the island) we were able to go. We owe a huge debt of thanks...

I spent a week diving. The resort was very nice, great pool, nice bar (expensive)attractive architecture. The food was a bit boring and repetitious except on the last night but none the less nourishing. The walls between the room were thin ,one could hear other's conversations Although not clearly. The staff were great but there was no wifi despite it being advertised. Unless...

Hotel is slightly run down: the bathroom is tired (with a few cockroaches). The walls are thin: we had the end room and the cats were yowling all night outside the room. The bed was comfortable. There was even cable tv, but the wifi was down throughout our stay. Diving was great, not quite Maldives level, but a lot cheaper...

Fly onto this private atoll (though shared with a naval base!) and dive and dive and dive. Nice layout though as some have already said- rooms have thin walls… food plentiful and good, everything easily accessible. Staff friendly and accommodating Dive masters and boatmen all experienced and super helpful. All tanks and equipment stay on the boat between dives All...

Are you a diver, en experienced one? Then this is the place to go. I booked this trip to Layang Layang already in February. Paying it was a kind of new experience and demanded a few extra phone calls to the agency in Malaysia. I have to be honest and say that I was afraid that I was being fooled...

Private Island, beautiful resort and great food. We enjoy staying here and feel very relax. The room is a bit old but very good in maintenance. Food are not very variety but good quality and good taste. Drinks are available all days but you should bring your own bottle to fill up in order to drink in your room or...

First another of our group did all our organisation so I can't comment on the efficiency of the booking process from "their side". For me it was exqusitely simle. Thank you Louise. The Layang Layang experience begins in a light aircraft at Kota Kinabalu airport climbing over the sea and heading out for 300K to an astonishing atol. On landing...

OK...I read all the Trip Advisor reviews....good grief !.....what a bunch of whiners ! Here's the reality: The Bad 1) Administration and booking is a little disorganised. The multiple booking offices don't communicate very well and we had multiple enquiries of 'did you pay ?'.....this was minor amusement value. 2) The walls are thin....VERY thin....we were lucky to have an...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Layang Layang Island Resort Sdn Bhd is an exclusive resort that dominates the Layang Layang island - an oceanic atoll of Spratly Islands situated approximately 300km northwest of Kota Kinabalu in Sabah, Malaysia. Fondly known as "The Jewel of the Borneo Banks," it is truly a diver's paradise. As many as 14 coral reefs have formed here, creating a breathtaking underwater scenery. The dive sites are well known for the intriguing hammerhead sharks and pygmy seahorses among other rare creatures. An hour's flight north of Kota Kinabalu, the island on which Layang Layang Island Resort Sdn Bhd nestles lies in 2,000 m of ocean and, due partly to the depth, this atoll has become famous for sightings of large pelagic species and for wall diving. Layang Layang Island Resort Sdn Bhd is the only resort on the island besides a Royal Malaysia Navy base. The resort, designed to look like the traditional Long House, comprises 86 cosy rooms, restaurant and bar, outdoor swimming pool, dive center with certified diving instructors and a variety of diving courses among other facilities for modern comforts. Come for the exclusive and intriguing diving experience at this remote destination out of the world, where rare and uncommon underwater creatures await you! ... more   less
