After visiting Sipadan two times, we decided to go somewhere different in Malaysia and Layang Layang was the choice. It is 300 km away from Kota Kinabalu, definitely "in the middle of nowhere" but exactly for this reason it is a wonderful dive spot. No pollution, no fishermen, not so much divers, everything is beautiful. Similar to Sipadan, maybe less...

Just finishing up on our 1 week stay and have thoroughly enjoyed it The staff are great and really friendly. There are 5 meals per day and although the choice can be a litle limited (similair dishes each day) there's loads and of a decent quality. The bar, restaurant and pool areas are v good and we liked the wooden...

I have based this review on the hotel and not the diving but if you are going to Layang Layang you will probably be diving so I'll share my experience as well. The resort is very conveniently located next to the runway so there is only about 150 meters to walk to the reception. From there it is about 150...

During our trip to Malaysia, we dived Layang Layang, Sipadan/Mabul and the Perhentians - Layang Layang was easily the best diving and the resort was the most organised. The resort is so isolate, and definitely not a party resort - which we really appreciated. We had the 5 day/12 dive package. Everyone who arrived on the same day that we...

Layang Layang Remote dive only location. The dive centre is organised and well run. Three dives a day with the first two dives focused on looking for hammerheads. This involves swimming into the blue at around 35mts for 20 minutes. Sightings are very much based on luck we dived twelve time and only saw the once others saw them six...

The most important are the dives, so I will talk about the resort and the accommodation later. The dives are simply fantastic! The organization is very efficient and since it is the only dive center on the area, you do not end up on crowdy spots. They have several boats and I have the feeling that each one was assigned...

We went for a 6 day package, included 12 dives - weather was good for us but the ocean did blow up a little on our last dive day. We went purposely to try and dive with the hammerheads and only found them in 1 of the 13 dives we ended up doing. None of this is of any control...

If you're a diver, this is a great place to visit. Since we already went to Sipadan in 2006, we decided to visit Layang Layang because we like to see large pelagics. We came in April since April-May is the high season for seeing hammerheads. Did we see them - well, yes, but they were very deep. I stoppped descending...

Layang Layang, or ’Swallow’s Reef’ in English translation, has some of the most beautiful reefs in the Indo-Pacific area. Layang Layang has breathtaking corals and towering Barrel Sponges. This is due to the dive operator’s “diver-no-touching” strict rules. In additional to its big pelagic mecca (school hammerhead sharks, manta ray and mobula ray galore - I took a picture of...

Booked a diving holiday for 4 (all of us are divers) to Malaysia and split between Layang Layang and Sipadan. I have to say that despite being a basic resort, everything was fantastic and well run. Great spread of food, diving totally amazing ( I am planning to return with more in tow!) The whole set up of the place...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Layang Layang Island Resort Sdn Bhd is an exclusive resort that dominates the Layang Layang island - an oceanic atoll of Spratly Islands situated approximately 300km northwest of Kota Kinabalu in Sabah, Malaysia. Fondly known as "The Jewel of the Borneo Banks," it is truly a diver's paradise. As many as 14 coral reefs have formed here, creating a breathtaking underwater scenery. The dive sites are well known for the intriguing hammerhead sharks and pygmy seahorses among other rare creatures. An hour's flight north of Kota Kinabalu, the island on which Layang Layang Island Resort Sdn Bhd nestles lies in 2,000 m of ocean and, due partly to the depth, this atoll has become famous for sightings of large pelagic species and for wall diving. Layang Layang Island Resort Sdn Bhd is the only resort on the island besides a Royal Malaysia Navy base. The resort, designed to look like the traditional Long House, comprises 86 cosy rooms, restaurant and bar, outdoor swimming pool, dive center with certified diving instructors and a variety of diving courses among other facilities for modern comforts. Come for the exclusive and intriguing diving experience at this remote destination out of the world, where rare and uncommon underwater creatures await you! ... more   less
