Home of the wanted and the unwanted! Or so goes a popular saying in these parts. Zancudo sometimes has the feeling of being at the end of the earth, Central Americas version of the South Seas. Hot, sultry and resplendent. I don't think there are any other colors of green possible. COLOSO DEL MAR sits in the midst of a tropical garden directly on one of the most outstanding black sand beaches in the world. We are located about 30 minutes by boat from Golfito, which is about 50 minutes by air from San Jose. We are a little more than one hour north of the border with Panama. We have world class (affordable) fishing, world class surfing (Pavones 25 minutes away), and eco-tourism basically onsite, our old wood cabinas are clean, well maintained, with new mattresses, fans and AC. We have an excellent onsite restaurant and bar. Come explore Costa Rica off the beaten path.

Detailed Reviews
A friend and I spent 3 nights last week in Playa Zancudo @ Coloso Del Mar. The experience was more, and better, than I had expected. The cabinas, while not luxurious, reminded me of a Northern Michigan cottage. They were spacious, cool (multiple fans) and immaculately clean; everything one needed was there. The property, while not huge, is tropical, beautiful and, again, immaculately maintained. The restaurant, serving breakfast and dinner, was terrific. Everything my friend and I had was excellent. Much care was taken to include a wide variety and abundance of local fruits and vegetables. My breakfast favorite was the french toast with a blackberry cream sauce; dinner favorite the schnitzel with mixed vegetables. As others have commented, the owner and host, John Charles, is gracious, charming, witty and a bit of a character. What fun we had!

Just finished my 8th year visiting playa Zancudo and have found the place I will return to next year. Cabinas are immaculate and very comfortable. Very convenient to have breakfast and dinner available as well, did I mention the food is terrific and they are very accommodating! The host John Charles is very gracious and always makes you feel very welcome. The staff is extremely capable and friendly. I have been to a number of places on Zancudo but this is the best.

Stayed at Coloso for 2 weeks, one week with good friends. Had a fabulous time! Beautiful beach, relaxing rancho to rest and read. The food at Coloso was wonderful and the host, Juan Carlos, and the restaraunt staff were extraordinary. Took a day trip, on a boat, to the Animal Refuge. On the way we were entertained by an energetic pod of dolphins! Snorkleing was available on the way back. Weather was exceptional, peope were friendly and hospitable. We'll be back again! Thanks for making a "friends vacation" so enjoyable!

The full package is offered here. Simple, squeaky clean, comfortable cabinas steps from the beach; hammocks under a palapa to while away the day enjoying the seabreeze; a wild natural stretch of beach extending as far as the eye can see that you are likely to be able to enjoy in complete solitude; an on premises restaurant offering a full breakfast and dinner menu; and a charming host and staff who see to your every need even before you ask.
What more can one expect? In our case, nothing.
We thought it was absolutely perfect. A place seemingly frozen in time.
Can't say when we will be back, but rest assured, we will be!

Coloso Del Mar offers basic cabinas with 3 fabulous plusses that make this regular traveler to the tropics VERY HAPPY. 1) big, effective ceiling fans 2) fantastic, full powered showers and 3) the cabins are absolutely bug free, a small miracle in this climate. This latter point could be attributed to Marta's scrupulous cleaning. I stayed here solo for a month and was one happy camper. The setting is utterly serene -- a beautiful stretch of beach with cabins set away from all road noise -- and safe: the staff lives on site. I adored the staff and the restaurant; the latter a charming, screened space with great breakfasts and dinners at moderate prices. John Charles and his longtime workers Eduaro and Edwin are terrific... I left like I had three younger brothers who welcomed me into their home. Really. I loved it here. I'll be back boys.

There are 4 Cabinas on the property as well as a restaurant.
My Cabina was spotless with a comfortable bed and lots of hot water in the shower.
Outside I had a private patio area with seating.
Towards the beach there was a wonderful shaded sitting area with hammocks and raised to get the wonderful afternoon breeze. I spent hours there.
The restaurant was great and very well priced.
I left feeling as if I had found a real gem!!!!

Over the past four years we have stayed at the Coloso many times. We have gone with family and friends. The rooms are clean and fresh. The restaurant has some of the best home made meals around, and priced very resonable. There are adventures you can go on or you can just relax and enjoy the sounds and seight of the ocen. The owner, John, is very friendly and will help with any of your needs.................It a GREAT place.

We just happened to stumble upon Coloso del Mar, and it was the best discovery. John was extremely friendly, helpful, and honest with us. He only charged us $40 per night for 3 of us in a great cabina right on the beach. The raised hammock platform overlooking the gulf was one of our favorite parts of Coloso, not to mention the tasty food at its restuarant at a good price. The restaurant has free WIFI, too, so bring a computer if you´re staying awhile.
Surfers: We hear that Zancudo can get some pretty large swell in the green season, but when we were there in mid-December it was flat as a pancake. John recommended going in July for the best surf (up to 10 ft on big days!) Also, John has a little surf shop with a nice selection of short and long boards if you don´t feel like schlepping your board through the airports.
Other than the flat surf, we loved our time at Coloso! The staff was super friendly, and we would have liked to stay there longer just to relax.

We had a wonderful stay and look forward to returning! There were so many activities to do like fishing, surfing, river boat tour and a beautiful beach to swim and hang out. The fishing is world class. The cabins are clean and very close to the beach front making it to easy to slip off your sandals and enjoy the beach on a whim. I am so picky about how I sleep so having the AC in cabins was amazing!! The surrounding jungle is filled with life and color. We saw birds, monkeys, beautiful lizards and a sloth! The restaurant on-site was wonderful and the staff is so kind. But most importantly everything was reasonably priced.
