Beautiful grounds and well kept landscaping. The pools are excellent, kept clean and I witnessed water testing every day. The staff worked hard at keeping the pool decks and lounge area clean. There is a trained falcon on site to keep the pesky pigeons away and a life guard that patrols the pool areas.
The room more than met our expectations with a large king bed & a separate sitting area with a trundle couch/ bed so our son felt like he had his own room. This is by far the largest room we have stayed in at any resort. The shower was wonderful with good water pressure and plenty of hot water. The maid/cleaning service was excellent, we were provided fresh towels every day even when we hung them up. The towels are the largest and softest of any all inclusive I have ever stayed at, they actually cover your body. The beach towels are awesome, large and in good condition as well. The mini fridge, snacks and coffee was restocked every day and we never had to ask for more water.
The buffet was average and we always found something to eat. The best ala carte for us was the steak house the meal was delicious, the Italian was good and our least favourite was the sushi but that is our personal taste. The snack bar is excellent and portions are huge! In all restaurants the service was excellent, the staff are friendly and try to make your holiday special and memorable.
Kids club seemed great, my 6 year old seemed to like it even though he only went for 2 short periods twice. The lovely lady who worked there made a point of finding him on our last day to give him a ball cap and t- shirt to take home.
We didn’t attend any of the nightly shows as my son would not go in as it was so loud. My parents went to one on the first night and they said it was just okay and way too loud. Fairly quiet place at night music in cantina only goes to around 12 and the 2 weddings were about the same. It was nice to not have loud partygoers and music blaring half the night.
We found exchanging money a challenge as the front desk said we could only change 300.00 cdn per day but they never had enough to do even that. They could only change 100.00 one day and 200.00 on another occasion. Be prepared to go to a bank in puerto Vallarta.
If you are looking for beach time don’t go to puerto Vallarta the water is very rough with a strong rip tide and the beaches are disappointing. This is not a hotel issue it is just the way it is and we knew that when we booked our stay.

Overall we loved the Barcela resort and the staff that works there are wonderful. Be sure to tip them as they work very long and hard days to look after us so well!

This hotel is not located in PVR, but is about half hour south in a little cove in the town of Mismaloya made famous by Hollywood movie stars in the 60's. I LOVE this resort, it was one of the finest and best run resorts I have ever stayed at and I have been a meeting planner/tour guide for decades. We booked the entry level rooms. They were huge with 2 separate seating areas, a table, big bath, big rain shower, huge comfy bed, and a large poolside balcony with side ocean view. The floors are hard and slippery marble, so bring slippers. Food and service was just wonderful, plan to dine outside on the patio. There are 2 huge pools with waterfall, hot tubs, a kiddie pool and a sports pool. Also a private beach, but the waves are rough so watch the kiddies. It is fun to wake up in the morning and watch the fisherman on the beach. The staff here is cheerful, and well trained the whole place is spotless. There are some nice paths to walk on above the beach. It is about half hour to Puerto Vallarta Old Town, which is extremely unique and not to be missed. Take a cab or the public bus runs every 20 minutes or so. Fantastic property, utterly relaxing and blissful!! I miss it!! My only quibble is that the pool music is loud and relentless, they don't need to scream over the mike and blast the entire resort.

A great choice for families

Affordability
We are a family of 8. Barcelo had the best rate & not once did we feel cheapen. It was affordable w/o feeling like we were on a budget.
Clean
This isn't a modern resort, but it's well taken care of. The rooms were clean, the floors shiny, the beds comfy, & our housekeeper was well on top of all our needs. Each night we returned to our room it felt & smelled as fresh as the first day we had arrived.
The grounds
This is my fourth trip to PV, but my first to Barcelo. The grounds were always clean & the grounds keepers were often seen picking up after the guests. We loved the grand entrance look to the lobby & the large pools.
The staff
Andrea at the kids camp, the waiters at the buffet (Octavio, Cesar, Jose, Patty), the ladies at the premium lounge area, Mario at the bell hop desk, and our sweet housekeeper- they were all extremely helpful & cheerful doing their job. We were always met with a smile!!
Location.
Barcelo is a good 40 min drive south of the airport and 20-30 minutes from el Centro. This may be a negative for some. But it's exactly what we were looking for. We didn't want to feel crowded or like we were in the middle of spring break. Barcelo still holds a kick back feel we have loved about PV.

No real negatives. Don't expect the best food from the buffet. It's a buffet. That's not to say is was bad. Everything was tasty and there was a good mix of things to give all foodie types something good to eat.

We can't wait to return!

Barcelo review

This is either a four star level hotel with a 3 star rating or this a three star hotel with a 4 star rating. I can’t decide, but then again neither can the Barceló.

I knew going in that:
Barceló PV is 45 minutes South of the airport and about half an hour from town.
Mismaloya beach is a small cove with lots of local fishing boats.
There’s only a short length of beach to walk along the cove and it’s also not long in front of the hotel so little space for loungers and no beach club.
You’re close to the jungle so more bugs.
They enforce the long pants/ closed toed shoes (for men) rule at all ala carte restaurants.
WiFi costs extra per device unless you have a premium room- then you get three or four devices free.

Rooms: spacious, but dated; We had lots of minor maintenance issues that were only a small inconvenience in and of themselves, but rather telling in summation. The broken fridge door hinge, the tv that needed to be repaired twice before it was finally replaced, the elevator that kept having glitches (our floor couldn’t always be picked- forcing us to choose a floor below or above and taking the stairs one floor.)

Pools: really lovely; there is no food served poolside and they also do not allow you to take food, even snacks, poolside.

Premium club: when checking in, they take you to the premium club. The regular lobby was deserted, but because there is only one receptionist in the club, we had to wait 20 minutes in the premium club instead of just having us check in immediately in the regular lobby.

Beach: water was murky while we were there, but otherwise what you’d expect for the Pacific side. It’s a neat, working local beach.

Bugs: you’re near the jungle- it’s very buggy!

Food buffet: quality is ok, but heat lamps are set to lukewarm. I even felt the side of a pan and it wasn’t even warm. Only hot meal option are the made to order items in the buffet.

Food ala carte:
We liked the Japanese and the Italian. The Spanish restaurant was not a hit.

Other:
WiFi quality was a hot mess. Pretty much useless and really disappointing. The signal wasn’t strong enough to reach our room on most days.

Noise: the noise isn’t bad by the pool, but it echoes up onto the rooms. With balcony doors closed and AC on, it’s not an issue.

Service: staff are generally helpful, but the hotel feels chronically understaffed, so personnel seemed stressed.

Overall: you are getting a 3 star level hotel. So long as you know this and pay accordingly, all is good.

This is the third time we've been to the PV area, and this is our favorite hotel so far! The location is beautiful...all the photos don't even do it justice. Just, wow! The rooms are nice, and every room has an ocean view. This is also one of the few hotel we found that has decent double rooms for families.

The service was amazing. In particular, Alexis and Oscar were the best!

We paid extra for the "Premium" level, which I think was worth it at only $75 USD per person for the week. This got us a room on the top floor, free room service, and access to the Premium Lounge, which had top-shelf alcohols. You have to mix the drinks yourself, and there aren't a lot of options for mixers, but it's OK. The snack bar in the lounge left a lot to be desired. We never ate anything there. Overall, it didn't feel very "premium".

The location itself is a little ways from town, and the roads are kind of sketchy (Mexican drivers can be crazy). It costs 175 pesos to get to downtown and takes around 20 minutes. It's 40 minutes from the airport.

The food was pretty good. However, we had trouble getting reservations for the a la carte restaurants, even several days in advance. I think they need either more restaurants or more seating times. There were several days that certain restaurants were closed. I recommend making all your reservations when you check in.

My main complaint would be the water pressure. It was unbelievably feeble. It was almost impossible to wash the salt and sand from ourselves in the weak stream of water dripping from the shower head. Ridiculous!

The pools and grounds were very clean and well-maintained. The beach is very nice, but there aren't many beach chairs.

There is a small village next door to the hotel with lots of cool features. You can rent paddleboards and kayaks at Paddle Zone, there are a few places to get massages or facials ($20 USD for an hour!), and a cool beach restaurant. It's really a cool little community, and I encourage everyone to check it out.

We booked an excursion through Estefanys Tours, and it was amazing! Try to track down Chava on the beach, he'll take you out for an amazing adventure.

On the 2nd of March 2020 we went on a last minute 7 day all inclusive vacation to the Barcelo Puerto Vallarta resort. We usually travel to the Caribbean islands or cruising. This was our 2nd Mexican vacation and our first to Puerto Vallarta. With the exception of cruising, every all inclusive resort we have visited was met with an argument to get what we paid for in respect to room quality. We never travel to less than a 4 star resort and usually end up with 2 star rooms with poor plumbing and in one case at a 5 star to be awakened in the middle of the night when a rather heavy wall lamp fell off the wall onto my head so we really didn’t expect anything different from Barcelo Puerto Vallarta but we were in for a pleasant surprise. We arrived late in the evening and were received by a very pleasant front staff who were very quick to process us and have us escorted to our room. The room was at least 3 times larger than previous resorts we had visited with beautiful marble flooring and a huge bathroom and shower where everything worked like new! The pool areas were exceptionally beautiful with several man made waterfall features that were surrounded by the most lush tropical plants and palms we’d ever seen. The resort was surrounded by equally beautiful and lush mountains and opened onto a small almost private secluded sand beach. The quality of the food was good at the a la cart and very good at the 3 of 4 restaurants we had booked. The thing that stood out most was the courteous and helpful staff from the front desk to the cleaners. There were a few staff members that we’d like to recognize who made our visit especially memorable, these members went Well above and beyond when it came to making us feel welcome and important. Waiters Oscar Martinez and his younger partner Alexis greeted us every morning with big smiles and personal service that was well above what we were used to. At the beach restaurant we were greeted by Louis Trujillo. Louis is the chef at the wood fired pizza oven and is a master at making delicious pizzas. Every day of our trip we were greeted by his great smile and he made sure we were tended upon as if we were royalty. The professional service afforded to us by these 3 notable staff members was stellar. They are a great asset to the resort and deserve special recognition. Because of the special attention we experienced from them we will likely be repeat vacationers.
Thank you for a pleasant and memorable vacation.

For us sun starved Canadians, the Barcelo was a beautiful week collecting memories of the accommodation, extremely clean (thanks Coriama), lush green grounds and pools where you were never looking for a server (Thank you Arturo for your friendly and professional service) and breakfast on the outdoor patio watching pelicans diving for their breakfast, which never got old, along with the first rate service and humour of Giovani. Giovani is a real gem! We had upgraded to the Premium package and we were glad we did for the restaurant choices and the premium lounge, with its impressive liquor choice. We enjoyed being away from the crowds of PVR, knowing we could take $1 Bus ride into town to enjoy the Malecon and shops. There were a couple things like the DJs blaring music during wedding receptions that caused us a little sleep, but on balance, we had such a great experience, we are already looking forward to returning next year..

We stayed at the barcelo in Dec of 2019. Upon arrival we were pleased with the decor and they took us straight to the premium check in.
The resort has some good points and more bad.
1 we stayed in a family suite which had two bedrooms and two bathrooms with a beautiful view of the pool and ocean. plenty of room for 2 adults and 2 children.
2. We enjoyed the restaurants especially the spanish one.
3. The entertainment the pool was great.
4. Location is far from town but it is beautiful in the jungle.
5. The news years show was great. There was a show every time some were good others just okay.

And the bad
1. The hotel is in need of a lot of repairs. The pool tiles are falling apart and the deck looks dirty.
2. The buffets were horrible. At breakfast the women making the omlets used her bare hands to pick up the bacon. The fruit looked gross and the barcy food had been sitting out forever and my kids wouldn't touch it. We ordered room service most mornings which was good.
3. The kids club was only for very little kids. My kids went once and they were very nice. The activities that were listed did not always happen either.
4.The drinks were very watered down at the bar by the pool.
5. Wifi was included in our premium room but was horrible and we were kicked off all the time.
6 The beach is very crowded and the water comes all the way up the shore so no space to sit and chill or build a sand castle. We did enjoy walking out on the rocks and watching the seagulls and seeing crabs. There are fisherman everywhere waiting to take you on excursions. We did go one day to a water fall and another beach for the day.
7. The show on news was good but they let us in at 9 but didn't start till 10 so we sat there for an hour waiting.

Over all we had a nice time but would not stay at this hotel again.

We arrived at the Barcelo Hotel for a one-week trip on 1/15/2020. This was our third time returning due to their great service and value. The first time I stayed here was 2015 for our honeymoon and we have brought new friends and family back ever since. This trip was different as we brought our new 6-month-old baby along, and my sister and her boyfriend.

Upon, arrival the bell service greeted us with a smile and took our luggage that was promptly delivered after we checked in. We have stayed both in the upgraded section called “Premium Level” and regular before. This trip I opted for “Premium Club” and my sister stayed in regular.

Premium level added a few perks that we fully took advantage of with the baby. The first was access to the lounge area on the first floor. This space was air conditioned which was great for middle of the day bottle feedings. We had access to hot water to make his bottles out of the coffee make being able to make reservations to all the restaurants on the property for our entire party. Third was a room with an ocean view facing the sunset every night that allowed for some great whale watching as well.

The room was cleaned daily and had two bedrooms, and two bathrooms with showers. We were able to ask the front desk for a crib that was delivered quickly. The room we stayed in was 2907 on the 9th floor. Due to the age of the hotel one will find minor things that need to be repaired.  However, the hotel is kept very clean and has a unique charm to it.

The food at the restaurants and buffet was very good. The waiters and staff were always friendly. I had a very good steak at the “Los Arcos” and during the day very good hand made tortilla tacos at this same location.  A shout out to “La Cantina” bartender Edgar Rodriguez who has always made some great drinks year after year. Waiters Oscar and Elena always waited on us at Breakfast and were always extremely nice.

I would highly recommend this hotel for families as you get a lot for your money.

This resort is located in a secluded bay area 20- minutes or so south of PV. There is not much around the resort except a local zoo which is worth a visit. This resort has everything you need included some great shops and amenities. We had dual massages on the deck of the spa overlooking the ocean. The pool side can be loud during the day with blaring music but you can sit on the beach area which is much quieter. Tower 1 balconies are in the shade all day and tower 2 have full sun. This is good to know when you request a room. The bar and buffet is in tower 1 and the spa and a la carte restaurants are in tower 2. Both towers have great views - it all comes down to whether or not you want full sun or shade as to what tower is better for you. The staff of this hotel are all very good and the food is also very good. The buffet was primarily mexican food and not theme nights like some resorts. It was all very good. Upgrade to premium is worth the extra money if you want that special treatment and separate lounge area with special meals different than the buffet.

Not sure where you are staying but in my experience the mandatory insurance made it double the price of the rental the last time we rented. you are required to add regardless of what your reservation says. Good luck ;)

No hobie cats, but they do have kayaks and paddle boards free of charge. Have fun. Beautiful resort!

I think they’re saying they’ll allow for 5 people but I do not recall a couch let alone pull out. They might give you a rolling bed?
