If you're looking for a hotel with view and access of one of the beaches in Shimoda, then this one is worth a try. What comes with that though is some challenges with location because while it is about 10 minutes away from the train station, you'd have to pass through several tunnels that walking is not an option (at...

We recently spent 3 nights in this very traditional Ryokan in April. This hotel embodies Japanese hospitality in the best sense. Great service, wonderful local meals, amazing view in the room, large guest rooms, and beautiful surroundings. Will come back again. The hotel is slightly outside the city center of Shimoda. The best way to get there and to get...

Well, this surprised me. I saw the other reviews but still, the photos make it look a little run-down or unloved. To my surprise, it was lovely - the views are spectacular, the decor was pretty nice and the the rooms were spacious. It's a great hotel but maybe a little far if you want nightlife unless you grab a...

I'm going to start with the bad part. It is the trip to the hotel. There were A LOT of twisty roads. As soon as we got there, we were greeted by the nice hotel staff and a beach. Note that all rooms at this hotel is facing the beach. All rooms are equipped with a modern air conditioner system....

First off, we booked a 1st level room with no frills whatsoever so my review may be coloured by the type of room we stayed in. There is parking available down a flight of stairs from the hotel. The corridors leading to the room were decorated very nicely, but the room itself was rather dated and the amenities provided were...

The place is nicely close to the beach. Staff is friendly and helpfull. Rooms are large and food is ok. However the whole place and infrastructure need urgently a make up. Carpets are worn out, pool is more than a dirty place and the surrounding is full of weed and rubish. One stair case can even not be used. A...

A little diamond in The rough. 20 min walk from Perry road in Shimoda and they have a shuttle at hotel that runs to town every 30 min. Tide pools and access to other beaches at The low tide. The staff went above and beyond to make us feel special and welcome. It was well worth getting a room with...

I spent 4 nights with my wife in the Yamatokan between the 10th and 13th of May 2015. We had a "1st floor room" which had a great view (as all the other 1st floor rooms as far as i know). These rooms are smoking OR non smoking, so you can experiment cold tobacco odors in the common corridor that...

I chose Shimoda Yamatokan mainly I was looking for a sea-view onsen. Every room has a sea view and it was really wonderful to sit outside the room and enjoy the cooling sea breeze. Our room though the smallest, boost itself on top of the sea view, it came with a lounge area and even a tub with a view....

This resort is out of town, on the side of a smallish beach. As we were there in November, the outdoor pool was closed and all beach activity closed. The onsen was quite nice, and they have this kitschy boat shaped onsen. In order to get to the beach, you have to take the lift and stairs down, and if...
