As other reviewers have mentioned Daimaru is definitely in need of a makeover, however it's location in Akakura Onsen is great. It's at the top of the village within easy reach of all the nightlife (not that we sampled it) and restaurants. We had a Japanese/Western room which consisted of twin beds and a tatami mat area which was huge,... More

At first appearance the Daimaru is not the prettiest flower in the bunch however once inside while a little dated the rooms are clean and very very comfortable. We stayed in a family room (Japanese and Western style bedding) which was fantastic for our family of 4 (kids 6 and 8). While not all members of staff speak much in... More

At first look the Hotel Daimaru is a bit dated, and needing some love and attention, once you look past that, you realise, especially if you are there for a skiing holiday at least, that things are pretty good. Firstly the location: The hotel is pretty much right on the edge of Akakura town, so is a couple of minutes... More

We stayed on a package with meals included and were so happy we did, although we may have left much heavier than when we arrived! The room was large by Japanese standards and blended western and japanese amenities well. Tom and Harry (foreign liaisons) couldn't have been more helpful or made us feel more welcome, they are an asset to... More

Not flash and a little bit ragged around the edges but a very pleasant, relaxed and conveniently placed hotel.Great western and Japanese rooms, english speaker on staff to help. Excellent onsen for after ski recovery. Very close to shuttle to other resorts and very close to Myoko Ski Park chairlift and night skiing. Adequate western breakfast. Short and enjoyable walk... Spent 5 nights at Daimaru hotel, staying in a Western/Japanese combination room. The room was spacious and comfortable with an option to sleep on 'standard' beds or on traditional futon beds. There is a fridge in room for cold drinks and a water boiler for tea, coffee (or huge pot noodles!). There's free wifi in the hotel lobby so me... More

I was a bit a bit wary after reading a previous review but I was quite happy with my stay at the Daimaru. If you are expecting a 5-star hotel then don't go here. It's a somewhat tired 3-star but with friendly staff (inc. English speakers) and a good location close to the Akakura lifts. We were with a school... More

Stayed for a week. Travelled with my wife as well as another family (parents and 1 child). At the same time there were 2 other Western (Australian) families at the hotel (for one group this is their 3rd year in a roll). Excellent place to stay if you're seeking a good Japanese styled hotel. The owner employed 2 Australians to... More

The ski company that reccommended this hotel to us, needs to get out here, have a look for themselves and give them some advice to the hotel owners before reccommending it to other Westerners. Diamaru is clearly a much loved hotel by its regular guests who come up from Tokyo for a few days skiing, and when travelling with small... More
