This was a very fortunate find; after four days in Funchal, pleasant but four days was enough, Sao Vicente and the north was a change of pace and scenery, and teh Solar da Bica was a lovely place to stay. It offers eighteen modern rooms, a good breakfast and a pleasant lounge area. For meals one has to go into...

We loved this little 11 bedroom hotel due to its great staff, beautifully decorated rooms and the amazing terraces with view of the mountains! Value for money is really great, and some details like the organic garden to walk through, the simple but tasty breakfast and the cozy "living room" with fireplace and couch area make this place special. We...

We have been travelling around Madeira and stopped here for 5 nights. What you ha to realise is this is a guest house and not a five star hotel. However in my opinion could rival some of the so called 4 star hotels we have stayed in. The location is out of this world with mountain views to die for....

The Solar da Bica is in a beautiful setting surrounded by gardens and mountains. You hear nothing but the occasional rooster crow or church bells, as in much of rural Portugal. The facilities were nicely arranged on a hillside with great views. Rooms were small, but large enough for our one-night stay. Breakfast was good, with some yummy local cheeses....

We had such a good time in Solar da Bica. The place is charming and the location in this authentic countryside has to be discovered ! The landlady was so charming, and we'll never forget what she did when we had a swim in the indoor heated swimming pool (so cool) she heated up the towels to give us a...

We absolutely loved this place - we were blown away by its stunning location and peacefulness. Sipping a beer in their beautiful garden is absolute heaven. Staff are very friendly, pool and sauna lovely and have amazing views. If I had one very small suggestion it would be to put some nuts, crisps or snacks to buy behind the 'trust...

Warm and friendly staff, nothing too much trouble. Spotlessly clean and delicious breakfast. Lovely views from all aspects. Swimming pool was an added bonus. Ideally situated for touring the north coast but only 40 minutes from Funchal. Would recommend this small and we'll run hotel.

Solar da Bica is a nice rural place to stay if you are looking for a clean and friendly place to explore Madeira by car. It is located in Sao Vicente which is about 50min from Funchal by car on the other side of the Encumeada Pass (use tunnel to cross it fast). Therefore, all important places on the island...

That is the question I am giving myself. Should I share how lovely this hotel is to the world and lost the benefit of a few people around? Or help the owners to benefit from the result of their good work? Well, they deserve it. If I had a chance to run my on hotel it would look like this...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Solar da Bica is a cosy and quiet rural tourism unit, nestled at the magic and idyllic Sao Vicente valley, in the Madeira Island. Located in an area with one unique view over the valley, it offers unforgettable landscapes through the breathtaking scenario of the mountains, including the exuberant vegetation of the Laurissilva Forest and the deep blue Ocean. It's the perfect location for those who search authenticity, rest, peace of mind, contact with nature, a calm and unpolluted environment and cultural heritage and integration in a traditional and rural life style. The property results from the reconstruction, adaptation and preservation of the traditional typology of two century-old houses, constituted by 13 rooms. The main house is the typical "Solar", traditionally associated to the residence of noble families, with characteristics of a manor house but with a smaller dimension. In terms of cultural heritage, it presents a great number of interesting and unique elements, such as the kitchen and some antique furniture. At the secondary house, the wine press, traditional floor and ceiling preservation stands out. At the green spaces you can also find numerous stonework and metal pieces that were part of the ancient Madeira's daily routine. Although it preserves many of the original elements, Solar da Bica was adapted with modern infrastructures, of which are worth mention the indoor heated swimming pool, the sauna, the panoramic garden and the biological vegetable-garden. ... more   less
