Here was the delight of our 3 week Charity Cycle ride. The monastery was enormous and has 300 bedrooms, 2 Basicilas and 10 restaurants. The room were very clean and modest - ideal for a retreat. It is cut off -- negligable Wifi and no TV but hey it is a sanctuary of peace. A must if you are anywhere... More

Oropa is an amazing setting on the front range of the Alps for hiking and meditation. I was lucky enough to visit on the St. Bartholomew's Festival--the returning of the goats, sheep and cows from their high mountain pastures to be blessed and proceed to winter pastures in the valley below. Wonderful! The history, beauty and vitality of Oropa is... More

We visited at Easter, late snow meant we enjoyed pristine peaks and clear blue skies. There were many church visitors (hardly surprising). The architecture, atmosphere and setting are just lovely, fabulous.

I just decided to go up to the hills one weekend and this place was a really good choice. The atmosphere of the hotel and the environment is really nice even in the winter. Could be a romantic place for pairs. It is really worthy to go up to Monte Camino and see the old city of Biella.

I expect this place may offer a different experience when it is crowded with pilgrims, but with only a few guests on a crisp november day, the austere splendour of the architecture surrounded by snow-cladded mountains and the silence that is only punctuated by a rushing torrent plunge you into another world. Guest rooms are big, clean, charmingly oldfashioned. Space... More

Great solution to visit this beautiful and unusual corner of the Italian Alps. The structure offers accommodation at various levels (hostel, B&B): rooms are big and extremely clean, staff is superfriendly and very helpful. Great value for money. The view from the terrace is spectacular.

We spent 3 nights at the monastery, which is accessed via a rather harrowing drive up through the mountains. While the rooms are rather sparse - much like dormitory lodgings - they are clean and quite adequate. The setting is serene and there are a surprising number of dining options on site - 3 restaurants and 2 cafes - all... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Oropa is the most important and largest Sanctuary dedicated to the Virgin Mary to be found in the Alps. It's surrounded by the Natural Reserve of the Sacro Monte and it's located in a unique, natural and unspoilt setting at 1200 m above sea level, at only 20 minutes drive from the centre of Biella. In the Ancient Basilica is worshipped the statue of the Black Madonna, from the Middle Ages. Oropa offers excellent accommodation for around 500 guests. There are 4 room typologies: suite, junior suite, comfort and tourist. They are stylishly furnished with antique furniture creating an evocative atmosphere. Inside the Sanctuary and in the surroundings, there are 12 restaurants and "trattorie" that serve the typical "polenta concia" (made with corn flour, cheese and butter). Not to be missed: the Sacro Monte (the Holy Mount - UNESCO heritage), the Museum of the Golds, the Royal Pavillon, the Monumental Cemetery, the Botanical Garden, the Adventure Park. ... more   less
