Here is where you can really observe the smaller things on the forest floor, and the bigger views across the valley to mountains beyond. The accomodations are rustic, and the weather is variable, but you must expect rain in the rain forest.

I will only be echoing all of the great reviews this place already has. I spent a week in the Eagle's lair cabins and am sad to be leaving in the morning. You couldn't ask for a more perfect and wondrous setting. Both of the cabins have very comfortable beds, with double doors that swing open for full fantastic view...

Our stay was a great experience. The cabanas are in a perfect location to take advantage of the mountain views, the hiking trails and the distance fron the town. We had a great experience at Cabanas Rio Yambala (CRY), from start to finish. After not hearing back from one of the online reservation sites, I wrote to Sarah at CRY directly to see if I could still make a reservation. Sarah was very prompt and thorough, and she gave us good advice for how to get from the Loja...

We stayed about 3 weeks and it was very safe, peaceful, beautiful and a gorgeous walk through villages on a dirt road with the Andes Mountains looming above, bright blue sky and flowing river. The hosts are very helpful and we would highly recommend it to anyone. Enjoy the refreshing beauty of Ecuador in all her splendor from a lovely...

We spent 11 days in Hummingbird Cabin, a self contained little nest with a great deck and views. Our place was very comfortable, we slept like logs, the wifi that suited our needs. Really, we can´t speak highly enough of the helpful, patient owners and our little hide a away at the end of eventful days. Philip is a mad...

Wonderful cabins! I rented the 'Eagles Lair' cabin for two weeks, and it is exactly what I wanted as a quiet getaway. It a simple wooden cabin with everything self contained, (kitchen, hot shower, big bedroom in the loft) including a perfect porch where you get a gorgeous view of valley. There are various hiking trails basically at your doorstep,...

It's perfect. We rented the Eagles Lair for a week. You get 2 separate, nicely built cabins, an outdoor kitchen and a nice clean bathroom with incredible shower all for $150/week. It can't be beat. It's about a 45 minute walk to town, or 3 dollar cab ride. It is peaceful, and perfect for reading in a hammock all day....

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Cabanas Rio Yambala is located in a quiet, peaceful and friendly valley, in the heart of the Andes. Local trails lead to swim holes along the river, to local beauty spots, or into the heart of the mountains and to the edge of the cloud forest., an ideal spot to enjoy Vilcabamba's picture-book valleys & clear mountain rivers. Integrated into the midst of a typical Andean rural community we offer a unique cultural opportunity to enjoy the local color of traditional Ecuadorian country life, while hiking the best trails around Vilcabamba. So Kick back, Relax and go back in Time :) While Vilcabamba and nearby surroundings have lost the feel of the quaint Andean village it once was, the real gem of Vilcabamba, the countryside, with it's stunning scenery and incredible biodiversity, has changed very little:- On the western slopes of the Podocarpus National park, the Vilcabamba valley encompasses 5 different climatic zones. Leaving behind the arid subtropical village at 1500mts the valley blossoms into an Aladdin′s cave of biodiversity, as it rises through cloud forest to the cold alpine paramo and lake region of the Central Cordillera at 3700mts, a rise in elevation of 2200mts. in just 15km′s. Our color bird guide has photos of the most common species around the cabins. We can help organize mountain bike tours, horse treks, guides for local hikes and visits to the cloud forest reserve. Enjoy spectacular views of Andean valleys with dramatic mountain formations; lush cloud forest & pristine waterfalls or, for the adventurous, explore our private reserve cloud forest reserve "Las Palmas" and the alpine lakes in the highest region of the Podocarpus National Park . The Birds of Las Palmas booklet, funded by the Nature Conservancies parks in peril program, documents over 180 bird species recorded on the Las Palmas reserve. Please ask if you would like a copy. Immerse yourself within and explore the culture, enjoy Vilcabamba's stunning scenery and diversity of nature on an eco-adventure, or just relax in a tranquil setting, a truly natural retreat. ... more   less
