Probably the most stunning place we have ever been to. I had just proposed to my girlfriend and thought it would be special (as I had heard from others), but it blew us away. What an experience. Sophie and the team were amazing, and we were looked after so well in our beautiful accommodation. As it is a small lodge,...

If you have ever wondered what it would be like to live in the Kenyan wilderness then El Karama is for you. This delightful, relaxing home in the bush lets you sample the pleasures of the wilderness with all the simple pleasures of an actual home rather than a hotel. Sophie, Murray and the team are friendly, helpful and unobtrusive....

Recently stayed for two nights with out-of-town visitors and had an amazing stay. The staff were extremely well-trained (very professional) and attended to all of our needs. The rooms were comfortable and functional - fantastic amenities, like homemade soaps, shampoo, kikoy bathrooms, plush towels, soft pillows, comfortable cushioned chairs on our own patio. The food was very fresh and delicious....

My son and I stayed for three nights at El Karama before a family wedding near Nanyuki. We have been on various safaris over the years but I am struggling to remember one as delightful as this. The ranch is beautiful and as soon as we turned into the gate we began to see wildlife. The camp itself is on...

I just returned after co leading a magical 4 day yoga retreat at El Karama. I previously fell in love with El Karama on an earlier visit bit this time that love and relationship deepened further. My room was impeccable with a lovely view of the river, the rooms have organic soap and shampoo/conditioner which was a treat. The menu...

The lodge is set in a beautiful area, with such tranquil surroundings, including the sounds of water if your near the river. The staff are lovely and were great with our daughter age 5. She did drawing, making books, clay/mud modelling of creatures, making plaster casts of animal tracks and the list goes on, she was completely entertained and had...

My husband and I have just spent three nights at El Karama as part of our very first safari. The whole team, led by Sophie, were so friendly and welcoming, not to mention knowledgeable! As well as game drives and walking safaris, we enjoyed breakfast in the bush one morning and finished an evening with G&Ts as we watched the...

I have arranged for several different family groups to stay at El Karama over the last few years and not one of them has been disappointed. In fact, they have all raved about the place. This includes families with young children, families with teenagers, and seniors. El Karama is small by design and so the service is highly personalized. The...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
El Karama Eco Lodge is an award-winning, intimate and family friendly eco lodge located on the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro river on a private working ranch with wildlife of 14,000 acres in Laikipia, Kenya. The lodge is hosted by a team of local professionals many of whom built the lodge and overseen in the background by the owners Sophie and Murray Grant who live here full time with their two small children. This charming lodge specialises in offering guests an intimate, memorable and active Kenyan safaris at an affordable price. El Karama is home to over 80 mammal species including elephant, buffalo, leopard, lion, cheetah as well as endangered species such as the African Hunting Dog and Grevy's Zebra. We also have over 427 bird species including indigenous species and European migrants at the relevant times of year. The accommodation options here vary: In the main lodge there are 4 bandas, 2 family cottages: The Rondavel and the Hobbit House and 2 brand new safari tents in the little sister camp 'The River Camp'. Rates include fully inclusive full board packages, self drive basic packages and self catering. There is also a natural campsite on the property for small groups. Bookings are taken through the lodge for all of the above. Guests at El Karama have a broad range of activities to choose from and the emphasis here is getting out and enjoying the freedom of this incredible wildlife area. They will be given the choice of guided game walks - including long tracking activities and half day treks all with professional guides, game drives, night drives, bush meals under the stars, fly camping during longer stays, specialized kids activities including clay sculpting, tracking and cast making following in this family's artistic heritage. The working farm also welcomes visits from guests to see the cattle, the dairy and biogas production area, baby goats and calves and the impressive organic garden that feeds the lodge and the ranch. All activities are included in the full board rates. The lodge is run entirely on solar energy and our overall aim as a family is to work closely with the community around us and with our guests to ensure that we preserve the habitat and wildlife of El Karama and Laikipia through responsible eco tourism and sensitive management of our natural resources. ... more   less
