First visit to South Africa, after a long drive we arrived at Ladysmith. The hotel is an old colonial style building, secure parking, attentive staff. Check in seamless, little tickets provided for Wi-Fi. Keys to the room, include two for locking wardrobes. A well appointed twin room, kettle with coffee and tea, biscuits, and a chocolate on the pillow, complimentary bottle of water. Tv is limited... ice cold aircon. Spacious bathroom (shower only). Only negative on the room is the noise outside... this starts at sun up! Breakfast and evening meals were superb, plenty of choice from the buffet style service. Attentive waiting staff clearing constantly, and refilling coffee whenever you need it. Bar... extremely good compared to uk prices... try the Savannah Cider. The hotel is full of history, the staff and management couldn't be friendlier, more helpful. A great base for Rorke's Drift (Zulu Wars), or visiting the various battle sites of The Second Boer War... and why not visit Nambiti Big 5 Game Reserve. Next time I visit... it will be with family

The staff were friendly and courteous and there it ends. We booked and paid for three days and left after two. Life is too short. The hotel is stuck in a time warp between the Boer War and the 50's. With mechanical keys on request from reception for the downstairs toilets, the swimming pool and the safe room. We were given a ground floor room, in what appeared to be an annex, which looked out on a small courtyard full of junk. There was mould on the bathroom ceiling and tiles. We never saw the rooms in the main hotel. While everything was clean the bed linen and towels very well worn. Returning from a day out (day two) we found the bar and lounge still closed off at five o'clock. While the food was quiet OK, we dined out that night. We left a day early.

The hotel is old with stuffy rooms. Wifi is not always on and you are given limited time. Parking is well secured. I loved their buffet menu which had a wide range of food to select from. It is located in the most busiest place in the city however closer to most amenities.

In Moscow, Russia, I booked this hotel in Ladysmith, expecting to be there by 13:00, leaving Johannesburg at about 09:00-ish! Left on time, loaded the satnav with destination and followed its advice. The flipping thing took us everywhere except where we needed! Regardless we managed to locate the Royal Hotel and were admitted through the security gate instantly upon turning off the road! We were met by a very helpful man who took our cases, be it a little in the rough side, safely into our designated room. Reception had given us the key, but nothing else. We arrived… no electricity, no A/C, no Fridge ad we had lots of cold drinks that would suffer without a fridge! We could take it to the reception, who would give it to the staff who would lose it in the kitchens! Ah! they would supply a fridge for 45 Rand… YES! On complaining about lack of electricity, they despatched a person who asked why there was electricity, to which we replied that there was not any and what did he do? He showed us a switch on the floor! Who in their right mind would look there for electricity to the room! That solved the A/C problem, too! We only wanted breakfast in the morning, which was included - a full English buffet! It was very good. The dining room was very Coloniallly Broitish of the 50s styling, but actually worked pretty well for the guests. Good wait-staff with smiles and courtesy cleared used dishes rapidly! After having recounted our experience (actually with a smile), we were forgiven the cost of the fridge, which had failed during the night and all contents were warm! Fortunately, no monetary losses! I might stay there again, but I think I would try another hotel. Having said that, The Royal Hotel had a very comprehensive history of the Anglican Boer War, of which my grandfather was the last remaining soldier of the Black Watch, when he died in 1978. He was 98 years old and that was why I wished to go to Ladysmith. I second wish was to try to see the Ladysmith Black Mombazo Men's choir. No luck, there! If you need a quick place, try the hotel for yourself.

spent 3 nights , really just average hotel, no DSTV, only buffet dinner available, no ala carte selection. lovely historic setting . Could hear all the noisy neighbors upstairs and guests that smoke outside entrance to the rooms make the whole passage smelly. highlight was the attached pub that had pleasant , helpful staff and a great bunny chow. Breakfast was adequate
