Despite it being a busy bank holiday Sunday and us not having booked we were shown to a table and made to feel very welcome. All four of us had a roast from the specials roast menu priced at £9.95 each and were pleasantly surprised (2 beef and 2 roasted butternut squash served with roast potatoes and roast vegetables). The...

We as in family. Arrived at the beautiful refurbished pub, to be met with smiling friendly faces. As always on our visits. The pub looks lovely and inviting with a very welcoming atmosphere. While waiting to be served at the bar, there was a family complaining to her husband why they couldn't get a table to eat, as there was...

We popped in for lunch after seeing The Sportsman had reopened after being closed for refurbishment - it looks lovely, rustic and modern if thats possible. Clean and very tasteful fixtures and fittings. It was pretty quiet and we got a nice table near a cosy open fire. I had a scrummy pannini filled with goat cheese and salami and...

Colin and Leesa could not have done enough to make sure that my recent (number withheld!) Birthday was a fantastic success. The pub looked great, the staff were absolutely brilliant (they could not do enough for us and with smiles on their faces) and the food that Colin prepared was top drawer. We can't wait to go back! Thanks again...

We stayed at the Sportsman for two nights during a walking trip in December. As it was dark from 4.30 everyday, we had plenty of time to spend in the pub and we were looked after really well. The food was great, there was a good selection of real ales and other drinks and the staff were very friendly. The...

My friend and I had lunch here after a lovely walk in the area of Hayfield. As we both have limited appetites we decided that we would have a starter each and share the bowl of home made chips. I chose chicken liver parfait which was delicious and my friend had the pumpkin and ginger home made soup which also...

Visited early doors one Friday for a meal. You can't find fault with the staff here, really friendly, great service and nothing too much trouble. They don't have a children's menu but there was a table with kids on close to ours and the server went out of her way to make sure that one of the kids didn't order...

Ate here two nights on the trot. Excellent meals on both occasions. Highly recommended dishes are the goats cheese starter and pan fried pork stroganoff. Excellent choice of desserts.(although we couldn't manage a pudding!) Range of beers and wines reasonably priced. Friendly, attentive and genuine staff. We will definitely return when in the area.

We called in for a quick drink on the way back from walking on the Kinder Scout plateau. We were warmly welcomed as was Otto, the dog. We ordered some beers and headed for the pleasant beer garden to the rear. The Thwaites beers were spot on and exactly what was needed on a hot day. Although we didn't order...
