Villa San Carlo The Zarri family opened the "San Carlo" hotel and restaurant in the 1981 and recently renewed. It has always been a favourite stop for famouse italians and international visitors who came to Piedmont looking for a confortable stay in a fine hotel with traditional cooking linked to local produce. The "San Carlo" can offer a wide range of attractions such as : The restaurant : has got the nomination to the national price "Hotel of the Year" in the 1995 for the best restaurant. The cooking is based on traditional regional recipes sometimes offered with a touch of phantasy. Our specialities with hazelnuts are way to promote the symbol of Cortemilia. The charming dining-room "Gourmet" is romantically equipped with chimney and piano; during the summer we serve dinner under the stars in the garden by the pool. The wine-cellar : offers about 1000 great wines coming mainly from Piedmont. Wines from other italian regions and countries such as the Great Chateau de France or the new Chilean, American and South African are personally selected. In the year 2000, the wine list of San Carlo restaurant has been voted as one of the best 30 in Italy. The following year, in the 2001, Carlo Zarri has been named "Ambassador of italian wines". The bar : open only to hotel guests. A good way to relax before or after dinner or to enjoy refreshments on the terrace or by the pool during the warm summer days. The garden : hotel guests can find a garden of about 2500 square meters in the back of the house. An original Giant Sequoia from California grows among the over 100 different species of flowers and plants that are personally cared by the family. The swimming-pool : open for hotel guests only from the beginning of May to the end of September. It is ideally located in the garden, sun-lit from sunrise to sundown. Mountain-bikes : hotel offers to the guests mountain bikes free of charge to discover beautyful paths through the woods among the hills of the Langhe.

After hearing great reviews about Villa San Carlo, we spent a week with Chef Carlo, his wife Paola, and their warm and attentive staff. We were instantly welcomed by Chef Carlo and Paola and they personally showed us to our delightful rooms. We were impressed with the cozy atmosphere of the resort and the impeccable state of the dining room and kitchen. The " World Renowned Chef" served a "Five Star" meal nightly, and a full Italian breakfast each morning. His wine cellar and his selections of wines are extraordinary. Staying at Villa San Carlo, and being wined and dined by Chef Carlo Zarri and his family was the finest "home away from home" experience we could imagine! Carlo also arranged daily tours and transportation for our group with the same attention to detail and care. We are already planning our next visit.

You know you have found the right place as soon as you arrive as you find NoNa(grandma) knitting away, keeping an eagle eye on your arrival. Chef Carlo who is world famous runs an amazing place with his wife Paola. We arrived in the afternoon and took advantage of walking the lovely village of Cortemilia, from the hotel. Enjoying the community and taking our friends who were travelling with us out for their first Italian aperitif. We had amazing dinners at Villa San Carlo, the finest of ingredients with a wine selection to match. Being the white truffle season we enjoyed some special treats. Breakfast is what one would expect at a five star italian hotel, with a wide selection to match all needs. Having the experience to learn how to operate an italian espresso machine added to the joy. Lovely hiking out of the door with trails that on forever. Make sure you have Carlo arrange for a wine makers tour as you are down the street from the finest producers in world. For those of us road warriors who have seen all the latest trends, visiting Villa San Carlo is going back to an age of the grand European tour, where your taste buds will be amazed and you will walk away refreshed. Ciao Ciao

We stayed at this hotel for the last night of our six day hiking trip in the Piedmont of Italy. It was truly a high point of the trip. We were greeted at the front desk after a long dusty hike by a very friendly gentleman who showed us to our room and ensured that we werel comfortable. Only later did we realize that this was the world famous chef that would be cooking our dinner. The room was very comfortable and the outdoor area and garden with a pool was a great place to relax. However, it was the dinner that night that was truly extraordinary. Chef Carlo Zarri prepared a meal that I considered to be one of the best I’ve ever eaten. Many of the ingredients are grown in gardens at the hotel or purchased in the local market. His wife, a sommelier, helped us choose a perfect wine to go with the meal. Overall our experience at this hotel was one of the best we have had will traveling in Europe.

Great stay in this hotel. It is own by fam. Carlo Zarri who is the 4th generation. Located in the beautiful village of Cortemilia they grow their own vegatables and herbs for their restaurant. We had our dinner here and what a great food and service. Carlo Zarri is no doubt one of the great chefs in Italy and the restaurant is a truly gem. Thank you all very much for your kindness and a great hospitality. Jonina and Thorbergur from Iceland

We stayed here at the end of a five day self guided walking tour which started in Alba. This was the perfect finale to our beautiful walk. We were very warmly greeted by Chef Carlo Zarri, who spent time visiting with us and showing us around. He also spent time reviewing his menu and talking with us about planning a vegetarian dinner for us that evening. The grounds are beautiful and there is a very nice pool. Being late September the pool seemed a bit too cool for us but it was not cold. Our room on the second floor had a nice small balcony. The bed was very comfortable with excellent pillows (4) and linens. The bathroom was clean and modern And everything worked properly. WiFi was very good and fairly fast. Morning breakfast included excellent local cheeses including Toma, my new favorite. Good breads and excellent house baked hazelnut cake and wonderful house made apple jam as well as the usual cereals and yogurt.

I stayed at the San Carlo for three nights with a group. Chef Carlo accommodated our special dietary needs. Hotel has an elevator. Not all the rooms had an ac. Very pleasant stay, with warm hospitality. Chef Carlo has an extensive wine cellar (don't miss it), and his menu is truly creative and original. There is an outdoor seating area with tables for dining. Carlo offers cookery and wine tasting courses to groups. Lots of fun.

When visiting Barolo, Villa San Carlo is a “must visit” hotel and restaurant. On our 7 day walking tour it was easily our best experience. The hotel is comfortable, the restaurant menu(full of interesting and special dishes) and wine list exquisite, and Owner and Chef Carlo and his wife make the experience unforgettable. With Cortemilia only 40 minutes from Alba we recommend all visitors to the area make a point of including Villa San Carlo in their itinerary.....they won’t be disappointed.
