Great location, short walk to Senso-ji temple. Next to Tawaramachi subway station. Nice onsen for a business hotel. Very quiet on a main street. Whole place very efficient. Great value for money. Lots of restaurants nearby.

I am 6’5” tall and I had been told that I would not fit anywhere in Tokyo; that I would have to duck under every doorway, be cramped in every bus and subway, and I would go home with neck and backache. While some of that was true, I was apprehensive about the APA hotel, though am pleased to report that - although the rooms are smaller than a Brit may be used to - they’re still fine for tall people and you will fit in the bed (they do these funny flat pillows in Japan that weren’t the easiest, but if you ask at the desk they will get you a bigger one that’s more like the ones we have in the west).

The room was spotless, and while I did occasionally struggle to manoeuvre around the bathroom (which is quite small for a tall person), I was able to use the facilities fully and found the room very good value for money (my wife is normal sized and also liked it). There’s a huge TV in it, there’s WiFi, there’s a fridge for you to make use of (which was a godsend, as we were able to stock up at the 7-Eleven or Family Mart and leave things there), there’s even laundry and baths upstairs. They left us bottled water every day which really came in handy too (Japan is roasting in October which I was not expecting). The staff were great, it’s right on the Ginza line, easily accessible from Narita airport, and though it’s not what you’d consider a luxury hotel, if you’re in Tokyo on holiday you shouldn’t be using the room for anything but sleeping and showering anyway. Also there’s a great pastry shop to your left as you come out the front door, a little independent bakery, that’s worth going to for sure.

Thank you very much for staying at APAHOTEL〈ASAKUSA TAWARAMACHI EKIMAE〉 and for your review. As you mentioned, our rooms are compact but devised well, such as various amenities, fridge, the huge TV, USB port and lights/air conditioner adjuster beside the bed, and the original bed "Cloud-fit" and 3-D pillow which is in our pursuit for quality of sleep. As you mentioned, our beds' size is double size. We are really glad to hear that you had nice time with it. Also we have the public bath(artificial onsen) on the highest floor. We hope it healed not only tiredness of your body but also heart. Our hotel is very close from Tawaramachi station, Ginza line, so it is very convenient for you to move to Ueno/Shibuya station and Asakusa station directly. Of course, it is possible for you to walk to popular sightseeing area in Asakusa such as Nakamise dori, Senso-ji, Kappabashi tools street and so on. Around our hotel, there is many local shops. We hope you found your favorite. From now on, we keep improving our service qualities. If you have chances to visit around here, we hope we see you again. Have wonderful days! Receptionist Motobe

We thoroughly enjoyed our APA hotel stay. The room was very small but I think that is normal for Japan! The room was modern with nice amenities. The hotel had an onsen upstairs to use as well.
It was right near the subway station or a 10-15 minute walk to Ueno station (major station with shinkansen and JR lines). The hotel was right near the precinct of Asakusa where we explored the various temples, bought souvenirs and street food. I would stay there again

I requested a non smoking room & they gave me a smoking room. Can't open the window to get rid of the smell. They gave me an almost empty aerosol to mask the smell & kept me waiting whilst I queried my room allocation.
The room is cold & noisy & the dressing gown provided is not fresh. I have already paid through Agoda whose system is impenetrable for making a complaint/asking for a refund. It was not cheap & no breakfast is provided.
This is a total contrast to APA Hotel Kobe & not the standard of service I expect in Japan. When your hotel is not good you can't enjoy yourself.

Thank you very much for choosing APA Hotel . We apologize for any inconvenience caused by the room type during your stay. Please note that the hotel prepares rooms according to the room type reserved by the guest, and even if we receive a request, we may not be able to fulfill the request if there are no rooms available. We apologize for the inconvenience, but please understand that we may not be able to change your room due to lack of availability. As for your reservation, you reserved a single room with an electronic cigarette, so we have prepared a room with an electronic cigarette. We also accept requests to change to a non-smoking room as a form of request, which is not guaranteed, but is possible if there is room available. In addition, for safety reasons, there are some rooms in our hotel where the windows cannot be opened, and it is possible that you were in one of these rooms. If you have a preference for a room with an open window or a room on a higher floor, we will do our best to accommodate your request upon check-in. Reception Morita

The hotel is conveniently near restaurants and train stations. The only drawback is that their parking space is already full by the time we've arrived. Understandably, it was because it was during the golden week. So it took us a while to find a parking space which made us late for our check in time. Good thing there's one cheap parking elevator nearby. It has a convenient store inside the hotel. So we can buy food and other essentials we need for our stay without going out.

The hotel received two stars and they are for its location and a cafe in the lobby. We didn't expect a spaciou room, but this had to be the tiniest hotel room I've stayed in Japan. The bed is pushed against on three sides of the walls. You probably take 5-8 steps from door to bed. The hotel had a dorm like structure where you step out into an open corridor from the room. We arrived around 2:30 pm and the front desk made us wait until 3pm to check in. They were not very flexible. Glad we only stayed one night.

I know the room is small, but I knew it when I booked the room. I traveled alone so did not need big room. I pick this hotel because of the price and public bath onsen/hot spring. I did not use the bathtub in the room at all, but used onsen every day. It saved me from walking 10 miles every day. I stayed for 9 nights so I did not book with breakfast. I did not want to eat the same food for 9 days. I did try the onsite breakfast one time. It's simple toast with red beans and a cup of coffee. The hotel staff helped me checked in with English. I am happy with my choice. Would come back if I can get the good deal again.

Location: (Can take a Ginza line metro train to reach this hotel)
Good:
a. Very near Tawaramachi Station. When you reach the station, look for the lift sign and once you pass the gantry, take the lift up, turn right and in less than 30 seconds walk (with luggage) you will reach the hotel.
b. Within walking distance to asakusa.
c. Quiet area so can have a good night's sleep.

Not so good:
a. Right below the hotel has nothing much unless you walk to the area of asakusa area (only during the day to near evening after which most shops are closed) which is about 5 minutes away.

Neutral:
Behind our rooms/hotel (room number X23, X24) we look past the window and realized that the area is a place for tombstones.....a place for ancestor worship....(individual feel on this) We felt this should have been highlighted somewhere for people booking for this hotel since it is just next to or behind the hotel and you can actually see it.

Hotel reception:
They took half an hour+ to locate our reservation - about 3-4 of them trying to do so..... We booked via hotels.com with "early check in" (1pm instead of 3pm) but the hotel insisted this was not the case. Bad. We returned at about 2pm.
Hotel reception was very insistent that check in happens only at 3pm even though rooms were seemingly ready and there were not many check-ins/outs. We returned at about 210pm and asked for check in and they said "NO". After a short few minutes, they spoke in Japanese and invited a lady guest who arrived not long to check in....we then told them we wanted to check in as well - was granted, finally. (They did share with us for every hour of early check in/out, it would be $Y1000/-) And how then they could invite someone who just came in to check in and not us??? (I did not like this part)
I have stayed in a few APA hotels in Japan. The reception we had at APA Tawaramachi Ekimae hotel come in as the least efficient and also most unwelcoming in our personal view.

Room & Onsen Cleanliness:
Very good. Toiletries very sufficient. Onsen area has lockers for use.

Room Size:
Smallish as expected so even with one big luggage would have posed some strategic thinking of how to place it in the room.

Given the kind of reception and confusion over our booking then (hope they can understand how we felt as we were told we do not have a booking at the hotel several times and we have to insist we have, gosh, after a red-eyed flight... !!!!), we are not sure if we want to return to this hotel again. People makes the place especially at the reception, the first impression. This one FAILED miserably in our view.

The good: Clean, modern, looks brand new, steps away from the subway! We quickly found the elevator exit that came up virtually next door to the hotel entrance. Breakfast included was simple but just perfect to start the sightseeing days! The staff was friendly, spoke good English, very responsive (the bidet in our bathroom didn’t work but was instantly fixed), and we were allowed to store our bags after check out so we could cram in more sightseeing before our evening flight. This hotel is VERY close to the Senso-ji Temple and the surrounding shopping district. Asakusa is very nice, quiet part of Tokyo and we felt like we were seeing more of the local lifestyle up there. Great price/value for our money!

The bad: Nothing. The rooms are “tight” by western standards, but this is the standard for Tokyo. The room was completely outfitted in the best of Japanese hospitality with slippers, robes, toothbrushes, a kettle with coffee, etc. Our bed was wonderfully comfortable - in fact after visiting Osaka and Kyoto it remains the most comfortable bed in all of Japan! The room was cozy and with all to do and see, we were hardly there except for sleeping! Our friends that stayed in an expensive international brand hotel didn’t have very much more room than us!

Bottom line: Would happily choose to stay here again on a return to Tokyo!

At 10 000¥ ($114 AUD) this is not for those after budget accomodation. But as an English speaker who only speaks basic Japanese phrases this is a good place to stay. All staff speak some English making check-in and interactions easy. I had my own bathroom, bar fridge, massive tv and a really comfortable bed. Black out curtains make for a great sleep. There's barely any noise from outside. It's right near Tawaramachi station on the Ginza line which makes travel super easy to Ueno giving access to the Yamamote JR line. 24hr check in desk.

Very modern. USB charge point at bedhead. The rooms are small but who wants to sit in a hotel room when you're in Tokyo right?
