This place is fantastic. It is hard to believe it exists in a bustling place like Tokyo! You can walk to the ryokan from Sendagai and Nippori stations - very handy having two different lines to choose from. The street outside is so sleepy and old-style. It is only open to cars for part of the day. Close to all...

Our family of four stayed here for six nights. It was very convenient to subway and JR yamonte line. Very quiet at night and exceptionally clean. There were plenty of restaurants and shops around so we ate different food every night. It is an easy walk from the NIppori station even with two small children and all our luggage. We...

We stayed here for 7 days/6 night over Thanksgiving week. We chose this inn in Yanaka because we wanted something different from our last hotel in downtown Tokyo, and we love it! We especially love the wonderful and meandering side streets and quaint neighborhoods, the temples big and small, the cafes, restaurants, gift shops. The subway stop is a straight...

This hotel, actually a Japanese ryokan (mattresses on the floor), is a 10 minute walk from the Nippori Station which is on the Tokyo Loop and the JR Yamanote line as well as a direct stop from the Narita Airport and two stops from Ueno Park. This part of Nippori is a step back in time with wonderful little local...

I picked this place because it was a ryokan and in an old Tokyo neighborhood. I stayed five nights in a large (the larger of two options) Japanese-style room and private bath. The owner was very helpful with directions and recommendations. Best of all was the neighborhood of Yanaka, a regular place thought very near the somewhat touristy Ginza Yanaka...

I think I found this place through TripAdvisor and then did my research on the internet about what it was. I wanted to start my trip in a not very touristy area and this place in Yanaka was perfect. My room originally seemed small, but had plenty of space for myself (plus it had a private bathroom). What's more important...

We split our stay in Tokyo into two halves. The first was spent in the Tokyo Hilton and the second half we moved into the suburbs of Yanaka for a more traditional Ryokan experience. As some reviews have noted the Ryokan Katsutaro Annex is not so traditional, its a hybrid with private bathrooms. We didn't mind that at all, and...

This was a great place to stay in the megalopolis that is Tokyo. The Yanaka neighborhood is quiet, but very close to subway and JR lines, including Ueno station. The ryokan proprietors were very courteous. The rooms are great for those who like traditional tatami. There are English-language maps and other materials, computer/wifi, and laundry facilities on site. We plan...

This ryokan is very nice. The Japanese style room was nice, the shower was very good and it was quiet at night. Breakfast was fine. The hotel is located in a nice area near two metro stations and lots of restaurants. The owners are nice and helpful. They gave us recommendations for restaurants.

Staying in Ueno, Asakusa

Neighbourhood Profile
Ueno, Asakusa
Traces of the history and culture of the Edo (old Tokyo) era remain vividly in Ueno and Asakusa. Spacious Ueno Park is a great place to relax and visit a variety of different museums and galleries. At Ameyoko which starts in front of Ueno station, the grocery stores and clothing shops are crammed alongside fishmongers. It gets particularly busy at the end of the year, when many people go on shopping sprees. The town of Asakusa, developed around Sensoji temple, has many shops selling goods and clothing from old Japan, making it a great place for souvenir hunting. It's also known for various annual festivals, and the whole district gets involved with the huge Sanja Festival in May.
