Modern style building with traditional Ryokan type rooms. Good location only 10 mins walk from Nippori JR station, nice and quiet, very clean. Would definitely stay here again. Wifi is a bit flakey at times but there is LAN connection if you need it and PCs in the entrance lobby. The noodle restaurant nearby (on the corner up the stairs)...

The location of and service at this ryokan were superb - when I arrived I was greeted by name! The rooms are traditional (sparse, but fully functional) and the location is great - a short walk to Nippori station, and also close to Ueno and the park and museums. There's also a great noodle shop on the corner! I would...

We stayed for three nights and have no complaints although the stark concrete exterior of the halls did surprise me. Our room was cosy, clean and comfortable. The only comment was that it could get a bit stuffy and there was no air con, just a heater but it was easily solved by opening the window. Location-wise it was great...

A five minute walk from the Nippori train station through a wonderful, old Tokyo pedestrian shopping area. Lots of great, reasonably priced (for Tokyo) restaurants within a few blocks. Try the nearby okonomiyaki restaurant-- the owners graciously helped these first-time gaijin in the DIY preparation. We walked to Ueno Park past lots of small temples and interesting sites. We opted...

I stayed here and another popular ryokan (Sawanoya) for a few nights back in February. It's in a great area (quiet part of Tokyo, close to Ueno for museums, multiple historical landmarks) and it's very convenient (a number of 24hr convenient stores nearby, a great yakitori restaurant, a very cool market area, and 5-8 mins away from the Nippori train...

I recently stayed at Annex Katsutaro again, but with my mom this time (had a single room here last year). The room was a bit small for two people but it wasn't an issue for us since we were out most of the day. Again, what I love about this hotel is its location and service. There are plenty of...

This is a great place to stay. When we arrived the lady on reception was so friendly and helpful, giving us a map, helping us with our luggage to our room, and showing us where everything was. Everything was incredibly clean. We stayed in a "small" room, but it was bigger than most places that we stayed in Japan. When...

Having never been to Japan (nor do I speak Japanese), I found Annex Katsutaro to be well-located and with English-friendly staff. The room is en-suite and a good-size. The futon was very comfortable, and with air-conditioning and free WiFi, this was a great place to stay. Annex Katsutaro is located in Taito which is part of old Tokyo and is...

Stayed 7 nights. Very clean and quiet. The annex is more hotel than ryokan but it is well run with a good laundry and breakfast. The rooms are very clean and quiet, but the outstanding feature is the area around the annex which is a traditional residential area. The annex provides a map of the area which is worth its...

Staying in Ueno, Asakusa

Neighbourhood Profile
Ueno, Asakusa
Traces of the history and culture of the Edo (old Tokyo) era remain vividly in Ueno and Asakusa. Spacious Ueno Park is a great place to relax and visit a variety of different museums and galleries. At Ameyoko which starts in front of Ueno station, the grocery stores and clothing shops are crammed alongside fishmongers. It gets particularly busy at the end of the year, when many people go on shopping sprees. The town of Asakusa, developed around Sensoji temple, has many shops selling goods and clothing from old Japan, making it a great place for souvenir hunting. It's also known for various annual festivals, and the whole district gets involved with the huge Sanja Festival in May.
