The Japanese-style rooms basically comprise a mattress that has been placed on the raised flooring, a couple of throw cushions and low furniture. Don't go expecting tatami mats and the whole works. The regular room might have been a more comfortable choice.
The 'Hong Kong' style breakfast (not included in the room price) is a misnomer since the only item on the menu resembling 'Hong Kong' cuisine are the pork dumplings which have clearly come out of a frozen package. Everything else are typical Chinese breakfast items such as congee, pickled vegetables, hard-boiled eggs and dodgy-looking sausages.
Convenient. There's a shoe shine service 3mins walk from the hotel. Lots of shops selling clothes and food, and the bus terminal with bus service to Hongkong is within walking distance (note: its a 10mins walk)
I find the decor of the hotel rather strange, perhaps I don't know how to appreciate it. Exercise caution when using the things offered in the room. Many of them come with price tags and would add on to your room service charge if you were to use them. These items can be ambiguously placed with items which you can use for free. You'll have to pay to use their bedroom slippers too.
Security might be an issue. Someone pulled a prank at around 2.30am by pressing the doorbells of every single room on the 12th floor. We didn't kick up a big fuss, but I did spot quite a few security flaws of the hotel. Doesn't hurt to pay extra attention when traveling anyway, so just be careful and do what you should do.
Breakfast items are limited and repetitive. This is not so much of an issue if you're not a fussy eater. But if you want a seriously decent meal, please opt for breakfast at those eateries nearby, or visit their Chinese restaurant.
Mixed reviews about the room service. We took up a few rooms during the period. Some rooms were cleaned, some rooms weren't. Some were tided within that 30minutes when we're out for breakfast, though the do-not-disturb indicator was switched on. Rather inconsistent service, I would say. The explanation was that we didn't switch on the 'please make up room' indicator and that's why the rooms were not cleaned on some instances. But I don't buy that story, because obviously some of the rooms were tidied without the green indicator switched on (or worst, the DND indicator was on). On some days, they replenish the mineral water and coffee etc, on some days, they don't..
Service at the front desk is not bad though.
It’s been a while since the hotel was reviewed and here’s my take of its updated pluses and minuses:
Pluses:
- Location: It’s in a quiet location by the river and not far from town centre (I even walked to and back). Or a cheap Didi ride away. Even late into the night some of the eateries, provision stores, etc remained open, making it a convenient location to get what you need.
- Very reasonable rates: Rooms are heavily discounted so staying here won’t break the bank.
- Good food quality: Like what others mentioned earlier, food is still good in the rooftop, prices are reasonable and staffs are attentive. Outside of breakfast the hotel provides a 20% discount vouchers off menu. View of across town from rotating rooftop is also decent. But the locals will chain smoke and talk loudly (a frequent occurrence in China despite the non smoking sign), so you’ll have to put up with if dining here.
- Room view: If you are facing the right side of the building, you get a decent view over the river.
Minuses:
- Room is basic, oldish and a little worn out. The curtains and beds are in fine to good condition (not torn at all), but the chair fabric is worn out. Beds and room are largely comfortable. Small tv in room and no fridge. Average cleanliness.
- Shower drainage is choked.
- Hotel staff service is poor. When told of the choked pipes, shrugged and told us flatly ‘what do you expect me to do?’
- Internet connection in room requires a local number. If you tell the hotel they can ask a staff to drop by to register using their hotel number, but it’s not convenient. WiFi in hotel lobby works better.
- Reception service is cold. When asked about visiting diaolous, offered to give us a local taxi number to inquire by ourselves.
"Ask for a room which you can check out the sunrise. The view's nicer at that side."Read full review
