Due to lack of time we only stayed here for one night but would have loved more! If an authentic jungle stay is what you’re after then this is the place for you. Located away from the main road and on the edge of the rainforest we had uninterrupted views of the forest. Our room was rustic but clean. It had all of your essentials such as a mirror, electrical sockets, ceiling fan and air con. The mattresses were great quality and all had mosquito nets. We found all of the linen was clean and freshly laundered. Towels were provided and the bathroom had free shampoo and body wash (perfect if you need to travel light) We really loved the semi outdoor bathroom which meant you could shower whilst listening to the sound of the rainforest. We were really blown away by the friendliness of this family run lodge. Rose was just brilliant and helped organise a trip to the local orangutang and proboscis monkey sanctuary which were nearby. She also helped organise transport to and from the airport. The food served here was excellent. All in all a wonderful experience!

We booked only for two night, but later returned and stayed two more! Although Sabah and Borneo sounds like lush jungle, not all the accommodation is so close to it, unless you pay quite large money for luxury lodges in the forrest. This one was amazing. While the huts are overlooking a valley full of trees and you really feel like in the jungle, it's still close to orangutan and sunbear sanctuaries (they even provide shuttle to get you there). In the night, you see so many stars, and hear all the animals, and you can truly unwind. The huts are on the basic side but superb clean and spacious. The staff is fantastic and food was great too. The stay in this lodge was really the highlight of our stay in Borneo :)

Lovely wooden accommodation with great hosts and superb food. Very clean but basic. The evening meal was one of the best we’ve had in Borneo so far. Great location for visiting Sepilok Orangutans, Sun Bears and Proboscis monkey. Would recommend.

The retreats setting is beautiful, you really get a sense of the jungle. We didn’t see any monkeys here, though they are about, I saw small lizards and a few black squirrels leaping about. There are snakes about though didn’t see any. The people who ran it were friendly, the breakfast is very basic and you get what you’re given, we had a sausage similar to a frankfurter, fried egg and bread, coffee and available, there isn’t a bar as such, but they do sell cans of lager we had Skol, there are no snacks to buy, so maybe worth bringing a few. Dinner was tasty we had chicken curry one night and chicken sweet and sour, we stayed here for two nights which is enough, the Orangutan centre is about a 10 minute drive, which there is a free mini bus. Getting to and fro from the airport we used Uber getting to the retreat which cost 16 myr about £3.00, our return to the airport I was told by the owner that I would find it hard to get an Uber due to wanting a taxi before 9:00 a.m.? Due to drivers going to the office and was offered a taxi, of which was her husband we were charged 40myr which is about £8.00, no doubt we could of got an Uber but didn’t. We enjoyed our experience here, the lodges are great, semi outdoor shower looking out over the jungle, mossie nets over beds, bring deet or other repellents, good idea to bring a torch when walking over to eating area. Around the lodges area had been sun loungers wooden that look like they may break if you sat on them, needs a bit of TLC hence the 3 stars, though loved being so close to nature. All food, drink and stay must be paid for in cash.....

Stayed 3 times over the past few years. Staff very friendly. Breakfast provided. Able to eat evening meals and lunch here for extra charge - nice food. Free shuttle to and from the Orangutan and sunbear sanctuary. Did the firefly tour too - I recommend. Accommodation suitable for couples, families, backpackers - a mix of all staying whilst I’ve stayed there. Staff will help with taxi booking and any other arrangements you need to make. Accommodation is jungle cabins with mosquito nets. Private or shared cabins. Aslong as you are outdoorsy you will enjoy it here. Worth a two night stay! :)

It's a lovely rustic place to stay, so as long as you're happy with rustic it's great! But if you don't like rustic and want some comforts maybe go elsewhere. The route to the cabins is across ground that could be challenging for pull along bags if it's wet. The cabin we had was clean with comfy beds and sliding doors overlooking a small lake and jungle. It had mosquito nets which are the 'tuck in' type so some insects still got in through the gap if it's not tucked in tight. There were a few holes and rips, but I always travel with masking tape to fix them as they easily tear. Outside bathroom seemed nice, until needing a shower at bedtime due to the heat of the day, you become a feast for the mosi's. I enjoyed waking up to bird sound and sat on our little balcony (on a tiny bench) looking out for birds, butterflies and small black squirrels. Food was fine but slow to arrive. Staff arranged us a later shuttle bus for a small cost as my son was unwell at the time of the usual morning shuttle run.

Lovely stay at this residence, very helpfull, good food and lots of help with activities! The lodges where very cool even with a/c! Only the wifi connection was really bad and the mosquito nets could use a refresher... Other than that wonderful!! Highly recommended!

Stayed for two nights and had a nice experience. Staff very friendly and willing to help. The location is a ten min drive from the sepilok main attractions, but there's free transport put on 2 times a day. Rooms are rustic but have everything you need including air con and nets. There's simple but fresh food served for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Worth mentioning that there can be bugs in the room, but as this is the jungle try not to leave doors and lights on at night as they'll come in. If you want to see the Sepilok attractions, two days will be more than enough time. Also would recommend using grab taxis to get around on your own time.

Out of our three weeks in beautiful Borneo, Paganakan Dii Tropical Retreat is unfortunately the worst of all our stays. We stayed here for two nights in July 2019. The check-in process was smooth. We were then shown to our room, which is around a 2 minute walk from reception. The ground is very muddy from the rain so you have to often hop through it. First impressions of the room were okay, very very basic. We liked the outside bathroom, it’s truly within nature! However, after around 10 minutes of settling in, we noticed that there were an abnormal number of insects around the room, especially around the bed area. We killed everything that we could see and then left the room. It turned out that we had arrived at a rather awkward time. Since the accommodation is situated at a distance too far to walk to the Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary, Sun Bear Conservation Centre, or Wildlife Centre, Paganakan run a daily free shuttle from the morning and collect you at an agreed time – very nice. We had missed the morning shuttle as it was around 1400 and you are unable to call a Grab (Uber of Malaysia) to collect you since the location is too remote. We therefore just relaxed at the eating area and had a beer. Upon sitting down, we were then greeted by this very young girl (around 7 years old) who was at first very welcoming. However, being as tired as we were from the travel to Sandakan from KK, we would have preferred some alone time. The first half an hour was okay and refreshing, but after that she became disruptive. She was throwing things at us, spilling our drinks, and no one was around to play with her which is sad. I fully appreciate that this girl must be bored out of her life spending every day at a holiday park, but I still maintain that someone should look out for her every now and then. We were with her for over an hour. The main highlight of this hotel which has led me to give nothing more than 2/5 is the sleep we got. Upon returning to our room after dinner, it was completely full of bugs – there are clearly large gaps in the hut that they use to crawl in. The bed was also covered with bugs, I would remove them and then turn on the torch 5 minutes later to find many more reappearing. The next morning I woke up with several more bites, but getting to sleep was the worst part as something crawled on you every couple of minutes. Definitely not ideal. Please note that the following morning we had asked other guests about their sleep and they had no complaints. One even said that they did not need to use the mosquito net provided. The food here however is very nice and reasonably priced. Each day there are different dishes to choose from. It’s great that the food is good because you have absolutely no other choice! Dinner also provides a nice social setting to meet other guests. Breakfast also provided as part of the accommodation, great value. Overall, this unfortunately was not a stay to remember for us. If our room was not completely infested, I would have given a far higher rating.

I spent one night here with friends and it was perfect for what we wanted - rainforest views and a quiet location. Waking up to the rainforest view was lovely! Just be prepared for basic rooms and bathrooms though. The staff were welcoming and helpful, and we used their free shuttle bus to the orangutan sanctuary.
