The three course meal cost 85 Euro for two and totally worth it. We can use the welcome drink with the dinner. The buffet breakfast was excellent too.
We totally enjoyed our stay.
That is a petty, the location is nice. The employees are friendly. The food is ok. The breakfast though can be a mess because of too many visitors. They grab like they had nothing to eat for days, and have never seen a buffet before.
So, because of the lack of alternatives I recommend this hotel, but do not put your expectations too high.
Starting with the basics, the main purpose of a hotel room is to provide somewhere to sleep for the night. This is normally done by offering a quiet, secure room with a comfortable bed and variable temperature. It is therefore surprising to find a hotel that offers literally none of the above.
Fault one: the bed was horrendous, absolutely no support with an old, cheap mattress. I had to make a bed up on the floor to provide any form of comfort and to avoid backache.
Fault two: hotels will often host wedding parties, which is fine. It is however important to ensure that the wedding party does not unreasonably affect other guests. If you come for a quiet night after several hours on the road, you don't really want late 80s techno pumped into your room until 1:00am, along with a whooping DJ. Not against such things, but don't put your non-wedding guests anywhere near the noise, which made it impossible to sleep.
Fault three: what at first appeared to be a private balcony was a communal balcony, whereby anyone in an adjoining room could be sitting outside your window. Rather disappointing to open your door only to find strangers out there, along with discarded beer bottles and cigarette ends.
Fault four: the room was not air conditioned, and as a result overheated badly. It would have been nice to open the door, but see fault three.
To compound matters, when issued were raised the staff seemed completely indifferent. There was a sense of customers as being ungrateful inconveniences, not what you might expect from a hotel. The Manager can't even be bothered to respond to the complaint.
The Van der Valk group should be ashamed that a place as bad as this is associated with their name. The brand contagion must be horrendous. Avoid at all costs.
There has been very mixed experiences staying at this Hotel. The rooms are generally ok. Particularly ground floor rooms with doors opening onto lawn areas. The primary problem is that the heat wave this highlighted the lack of air conditioning in this old hotel.
Iniitially the service wasn't impressive and had quite a few problems with the rooms and lack of prompt response by the hotel to fix them but I have noticed that generally this year the service has improved a lot from my earlier experiences and the quieter location outside of the town makes it easier to do the evenings exercises/walking/running etc.,
Food is ok... apparently the restaurant is highly recommended in the area but wasn't so impressed myself. Although the breakfasts are reasonable.
Overall reasonable and if the Vorhuys Grand Cafe is full (which it often is) then this is not a bad alternative.
The beds are big enough, and a little bit soft, nice. Parking is free.
Breakfast is max 7 out of 10.
Good for a stopover, check the last-minutes rates, we had a nice deal.
