This "resort" is probably typical of the Florida Keys. It is more like a 1980's motel, 2 story, with outside staircases. There is a nice pool, an open-air tiki bar. The room was clean and included two beds (I didn't pay attention to whether they were full or queen because I was with my granddaughter in separate beds), mini-fridge, microwave, table with two chairs, and a community deck which overlooks the canal that can only be accessed from guest rooms. Just be aware of what you are getting, and don't expect a typical resort.

If I was young and single, this place would be a good deal for a dive trip. But I was here with two teens and weather prohibited diving. No one used the pool. The tiki bar was full of smoke and smelled like an ash tray so we ate dinner in our room. The rear balcony was full of butts and empty beer bottles. Depressing. We did some fun stuff nearby, but we didn’t want to be at the hotel, making the trip a little stressful.

Response from Looe Key, General Manager at Looe Key Reef Resort
Responded 7 Jan 2021
Jill - we're sorry you didn't thoroughly enjoy your stay with us. Sorry you didn't try the pool as we keep it at a balmy 82F. I'll definitely talk to housekeeping about checking and cleaning the rear balconies. And although we don't run the Tiki Bar, we'll pass along your comments to them as well. We hope you'll check us out again the next time you're in the area.

We wanted a room outside of Key West on the way back north. I didn't have high hopes for this place based on reviews and photos. It is quite interesting. I consider it a dorm style room, large enough with two queen beds, tile floor, separate bathroom, very small, table and chairs, and a second door on the back that overlooks the canal, with chairs. Tiki Bar and Restaurant on site, lovely pool and lounging deck. Very overpriced for the accommodations but it seemed clean.

I question the positive reviews. Here’s my story. I booked a room in January for a March Key West adventure. We were supposed to be snorkeling in the morning on the second day. Upon arrival, the overpowering smell of mold and mildew in the office had my radar up. Our room was not ready even though it was 3pm and the check in time. We were further informed that the morning snorkeling trip was also canceled. We were the only divers signed up. So we asked to see a random room. The smell of disinfectant was so strong no human could sleep there. After a drink at the tiki bar and booking a room in KW. we went back to the office to inform them that we did not need the room since there was no snorkel trip in the am. The manager was off that day and I was told she would call me in the am regarding a refund for the room. She did call to confirm the cancellation of the snorkel trip. After asking for a refund for the room she explained their 11day cancellation policy. Long story short, I have a dispute in w CC company. I did receive the snorkel trip refund but only after calling the dive shop.
I question the intelligence of management. They could have done the right thing and avoided this review. Now they will never know how much business this review may cost them.

I disagree with the negative reviews. I stayed there for two nights in mid-January, 2023.
The first thing that I noticed was how welcoming and helpful the Front Desk (located in the dive shop) was upon my arrival. When I went to my room, it smelled clean and and it was as clean as any major hotel chain that I've stayed in over the past several years.
I had my air-conditioner running at night so I didn't hear any noise from the bar or outside the room. I do know that a bands were playing both nights at the TiKi bar both nights because I went to the TiKi bar for a couple of post-dinner drinks on my second night of my stay. The bartenders at the TiKi bar were very attentive and friendly.
In addition to the wonderful Front Desk staff, I enjoyed a nice dive at Looe Key Reef with the crew from the resort. The boat crew was professional and laid back.
I appreciated that fact that they had a secure dive gear storage area for gear to hang and dry so it didn't have to be hauled back to my room. They even let me use the storage area the second day of my stay even though I dove with another dive center (due to my trip with Looe Key Resort being cancelled because of a lack of passengers). They were also respectful enough to notify me of the cancellation the day before so I could make other diving arrangements & I was refunded the cost of the trip immediately.
If I ever need accommodations in the Middle Keys again, I will definitely make Looe Key Resort my first choice.

Their reef dive reviews are great, but DO NOT stay at the facility. We booked a 2-night stay so we could be there for the morning reef trip only to be told they didn't have enough people and would only do an afternoon trip. Surface conditions are of little concern to divers, but wind with 1-2 foot seas would be pretty unpleasant for snorkelers. Yet they were fine booking me under those conditions. Adjoining the property is a tiki bar which projects booming bass noises well into the night, making sleep impossible. Despite being as far from that as possible in my tiny, antiquated AND vastly overpriced room with a rattling air-conditioner, the noise was still intolerable.. So I left, asking the front desk lady for a refund for the 2nd night, but have received no response.

THINK TWICE about booking a room here. I booked one night on Travelocity for $200 only to find out that the toilet was broken, the blinds didn't work, the door to the room didn't close, the deadbolt didn't work and there was no counter space in the bathroom.
I requested another room but none we're available. I requested a refund from Travelocity and the hotel management. Neither one of them was willing to grant me a refund due to the poor quality of the room.
Now I'm not sure about the other rooms at this motel but if the others are like this one find a different place to stay.

Checked in with a younger woman who was very kind and friendly. Told her that ESPN was not available on the room TVs but is available only in the Tiki Bar. Wanted to watch the College Championship in the room and she was upset that we couldn’t. Back at the room, which was of acceptable condition, I realized I hadn’t received a receipt for my credit card charge. Went back to the office and a very disinterested older woman couldn’t have cared less about the TV problem (they want you to spend money in the very expensive Tiki Bar) nor did she care that the receipt she grudgingly printed for me did NOT show the actual transaction that took place. Told her I’d have to go online to my bank to see the charge and she just said, “Oh well.” She is representing this Resort in a very negative light and does not seem qualified to be working in a customer service position. We will not be returning to this Resort in the future.

Do not be fooled by “resort” in the name of this place, this is a motel at best. Not nice at all. We even found a key card to put room laying outside on a wooden gate. I would not stay here again. We definitely should have done more research prior to our booking.

We stayed 2 nights, a Sunday and the following Friday with a paddle trip in between. The check in in the dive shop is a bit off putting. On arrival on Friday, we were told one thing by the guy behind the desk and the totally opposite thing by the guy running the TIki Bar. Tiki Bar food is lackluster. Rooms are spartan and not very clean. Towels are scratchy. Coffee is weak. There are no tissues in the room, only toilet paper to blow your nose. No phone in the room so if you need something you have to go to the dive shop. When we checked in again on Friday, the guy looked at my husband's license and said "New York? Why would you live where the weather can kill you?" Insulting a good portion of the country. When I told him that we had just finished a 5-day kayak paddle, he insulted me again by saying" Why would you waste energy paddling to place you can drive a motor boat to?" Why would you employ someone who insults your customers? I don't know. The band on Friday night started at 7pm and ended at 10pm. Our room was close to the Tiki Bar and we could hear it like we were sitting outdoors. I slept with my ear plugs in. At $189 a night, it is one of the more reasonable places in the Keys, but the rest of the issues do not make it worth it. Maybe if you are a diver this place is worth it. For us, it was awful and I would not recommend it.

Response from Looe K, Manager at Looe Key Reef Resort
Responded 15 Mar 2020
Thanks for the feedback, Nancy. We're sorry you weren't completely happy with your stay and your experience is not typical of the experience of our other guests. I apologize that our employee's attempt at humor fell flat, and we'll do a little employee coaching regarding that. We'll keep working on the other issues you mentioned and hope you'll give us another try in the future.

No to both, run for your life, this is not a good place at all, read the attitude of the responses to the feedback left, the repeated excuses, compared to the time they were giving, instead of apologizing and fixing the issue, it seems from the responses, the customer is always WRONG !!
I felt really safe here and we rated it as one of our trip highlights. we like to find the local color and Looe Key Reef was a hit. It might take more than one night to feel the love. Enjoy! Be sure to sit on the back "patio" for the morning sun. And do visit the tiki bar. It was fun!
