We stayed here as a group of 8 people.. We booked 3 rooms.. We reached at 9pm and this guesthouse is quite hard to find.. The owner of the guesthouse is really friendly and helpful.. However, the hotel seriously need some refurbish.. Old and smelly hotel.. They provide wifi but not available at night as the reception closed at 11pm.. Everything was scary and looks dirty.. Plz dont trust the picture on the web as the real looks of the room is really terrible..

I don't know where the other reviewers stayed but this place is disgusting.

As you can see I have written over 135 reviews and try to be as fair as possible but this just did not live up to the reviews it has been getting on TA.

To start, the reception area was not clean....the floor looked like it hadn't been swept for a long time and the cushions of the suite in the corner were strewn around, so not a good start.

We had booked and paid for this room through Agoda but I had done my research so was very surprised to encounter filty stairs when we walked up the two flights to our room. There were cigarette butts, clumps of dirt (?) and just very very dirty. Doesn't this hotel have a cleaner?

In one corner there was a large rubbish bin (like you get in McDonalds and it was filthy too with cigarette ash everywhere and an empty bottle sitting on top.

By this time I was dreading opening the door to our room especially when I saw the state of the hallway and the front of the door, not to mention the blob of (?) just before our door. The room was large with a king size double bed. The floor wasn't too bad but the bedspread had stains.....fortunately the sheets were clean. There were two very small misshapen pillows dotted on the bed...they looked like two strangled marshmallows (quite funny really!).

The real shock came when I opened the bathroomn door. The floor and walls had mouldy grout. The bottom of the door was rotting as was the door jamb. The soap holder under the shower had caked on soap from some other user and the shelf below the mirror had not been cleaned and had some mystery deposits also, but it was the floor around the toilet that was really the worst. It was black.....maybe mould but it could have been anything.

There was so much wrong with this place I was going to complain and maybe check out but it was school holidays and most places were full. As we had paid all monies to Agoda I didn 't like my chances of getting any result and the stress of it all was just not worth it. After all, if management really cared they wouldn't hire out a room in that condition, so I went into damage control.

We walked around the corner and found a shop which sold everything (thank goodness!). I bought a stiff brush, bleach, cleaning cloths and two pillows. It cost 45MYR but as we were staying here for 3 nights that equated to 15MYR per night.....I could live with that plus at least I would know that the bathroom was clean. I sprinkled bleach all around the bathroom and left it for a couple of hours while we went out. When we got back I scrubbed the floor and found a lot of the black around the toilet had come off but not all.

In the three nights we stayed, our room was never serviced and we never had new towels. The manager would smoke in the office but always make sure he was over by the open window. The free wi-fi only realy worked properly for me in the reception area.

I have given this hotel a rating of 1 and this is only because it was not expensive. And just to follow up on that comment, just because a place is cheaper does not mean it should be dirty.

I have no doubt that if I went back in 12 months it will be in the same condition!

It was ok. But for the budget I paid, it is more than enough. It has potential to be one of the best budget hotels, but need a big improvement. Owner was friendly. Had a nice stay. Hope to come again.

i really did not expect this place to be as cosy as it was because of the budget price we paid for it. it is relatively new, in kuah town and cost only rm8 for a taxi from jetty to the hotel. there is 2, an amara motel and an amara guesthouse. i stayed in the guesthouse. per night was rm88 at the time i went. it had a really huge king-sized bed, heated shower, clean and just nice type of bathroom, chair, small closet, table plus dressing table with mirror, side table, side light and one large table with storage space (i presume to put all my things on it!!). the only drawback was the aircond which was not very cold, even at 17 degrees but the fan compensated it and at night it was quite cold. towels and soap were supplied. there is no lift, but its just 2 floors max. the owner, Mr. Nelson is very friendly and helpful and the staff too were very adequate. we requested for our beds to be made when we went out and they even gave us extra towels because we were going island hopping! now that is very considerate of them. there is also a tv in the room, not very clear, so yeah didnt really use it. all in all, i suggest this budget hotel for all. surely my next visit too i will stay here!

The staff very polite. We booked 2 deluxe triple for 4nights but only 1unit available. They changed the room to 1 deluxe with extra 1 room. We are ok with that arrangment. For the price we paid we are happy. We went out early in the morning and only came back around 11pm..so no big deal.the stairs all light up ..can see some improvement from what i read from previous reviews. Big room but 1 of the air conditioning not functioning.

Amara guesthouse opened a few months ago in a formar school building and it offers comfortable, clean rooms close to the jetty (taxi: 8 RM). The room is big - with kingsize bed! -, the bathroom is the usual "shower abover the toilet" style, but clean and functional. There is no internet in the room, but there's free wifi in the lobby area. There's no elevator, so you'll have to climb a few stairs, but consider it as your daily exercise.
The guesthouse is close to Kuah city center, the jetty area is just a few minutes drive away, the nearest relatively nice beach is ca. 25 min.
Nelson - the owner - is a great host, very helpful and does his best to make you feel welcome. He worked in a 5 star hotel for 15 years, so he knows very well how to please his guests.
If you want to avoid tourist traps such as Pantai Cenang and you want good value for your money, you will be satisfied with Amara.
If you want to make the most of your stay on Langkawi, you'll need to rent a scooter to get around the island - Nelson can help you with that too. He even drove us to the scooter rental.

"If you come in group of 3 to 5, you don't need to rent extra room, rent extra bed instead. It really spacious, the bed can accommodate up to 3 people. choose the furthest room you can in case there is a group of people stay there, it maybe quieter."
