The resort itself is very pretty, jungle like with lots of plants and statues on the walk down to the private beach which is absolutely stunning and so peaceful (see my pic!).You’re in a walking distance of some great restaurants and the bars of Pantai Cenang.
There negatives for me were:
- WiFi doesn’t work in the room at all, you can only get it in the reception area.
- The bathroom had no ventilation.
- The sun loungers on the beach are all old and broken with no cushions, my husband fell through one and hurt his back.
Overall we had a great stay and I’d definitely recommend the resort.
If you do not like high rise hotel (like me) wanna find a decent room to stay for 1 or 2 nights, easy to access around for street food and market. I would suggest you this hotel.
Room was tidy and mostly clean. The ceiling of the bathroom a little worse for wear and water pressure was lacking. As stated, very good value for money and for what we saved in board allowed for more excursions etc. Would recommend to a friend.
This end of the beach is suited to confident swimmers only in my opinion as it drops off quite quickly and bigger waves could cause concern. I enjoyed it as its at the end of the beach with a couple of coconut trees for shade.
The staff keep the rooms well serviced. Air con with clean filters and a ceiling fan offer comfort.
The more economical rooms closer to the beach are in one long block.
Unfortunately, should your neighbour's require loud tv, conversations and or a drinking session till 0145 am, you may find that impacting on the quality of your stay.
The managers advice on this issue is to pay another 20myr a night and move into other rooms that only have one neighbour.
Something to weigh up.
Cheers
This allows me to stay in the best room the resort has to offers which is Room 198. It's the only room that's facing the beach/sea view.
Arrived early at around 10.30am and was immediately given the keys to the room, which was great. Staff was friendly and accommodating.
Room was spacious with all the amenities you'd expect..anyway, this is not a Marriott so keep your expectations low and you'll be fine.
The resort itself is tucked in a beautiful garden surrounding, but maybe in the near future the construction of the unwanted luxury condo next to it will affect your stay. Pls check before booking.
Due to the construction hoarding of the condo and nearby upcoming Parkroyal, the beach is quite inaccessible to the public, which means guests have the beach for themselves. I spent every morning and evening on the sandy almost to myself, save for the occasional anglers and visitors.
Overall, a very nice place to stay and enjoy the beach without having to break the bank.
Clean and tidy with lots of greenery. Friendly staff. What more could you want for the price.
The included breakfast was excellent; fresh fruit, juice, tea, coffee, eggs made to your liking, toast with jams.
In the room, there were a few gaps around the AC unit and windows so you may want to purchase a plug-in insect killer (<US$5 at the grocery store across the road). Our room (US$45 per night) had a small fridge, tea & coffee making facilities and tv in the room (Malay & Indian language channels). There was a separate bathroom and large walk in shower. The resort has a website and replies quickly to e-mail requests.
I shall keep this review short, and centered solely on one aspect: the hotel staff. When I made the reservation (secured by credit card), the staff had gotten the dates wrong by 1 day - we promptly noticed this, wrote back, and received a confirmation from Miss "Mas" stating the correct dates. Suffice to say, when we arrived, the staff only had a record of us coming the next day. When I saw that Miss Mas herself was at reception, I thought surely she would help us out. She soon realized the mistake and since there is only so much you can do without taking other guests' rooms, the least we expected was kindness.
However, her only line was: "made a mistake, it is human, can only call another hotel for you". This was on National Day, a long week-end for Singaporeans hence the island was fully booked. She called a total of 2 hotels for us, which we looked at. Both of them were the worst of the worst (Sandy Beach Resort - room was absolutely filthy with used tissues on the bed with dirty linen). Having called 2 hotels, at that point, she said it was up to us, and we are welcome to come back the next day. Her line, repeated over and over again ("human mistake, I cannot help you now, you come back tomorrow"), was uttered more and more angrily at us - though it was us who were being mistreated.
After finding another place ourselves (Lanai Beach Resort, which was just OK), we did go back the next day because I did not want a "grudge" to determine whether I was going to enjoy the rest of the stay. However, once there, we realized that their advertised rates (both on the Internet and printed in the lobby) were higher than what they had reserved for us. Although she kept mentioning their "surcharge" for peak season (it is rainy thus low season right now), she could not point to anywhere it is written, not even in the lobby, which showed the lower rates as well. On the phone with the manager, who had been informed of what happened the day before, I thought surely she must be very apologetic.
Instead the opposite was true: she defended the "human mistake" of her staff vigorously and said she was happy for us to leave and not stay the second night. Shocked at her behavior, I asked if she knew about TripAdvisor and she said I can go right ahead and write this review about the hotel, she does not really care. Finally, she hung up on me.
Having traveled extensively through SE Asia, I know hotels are ALL aware of TripAdvisor, cherishing it as the foremost resource for reservations. Should you go to this hotel, in all likelihood you shall be fine. However, I felt fellow travelers should be aware of its staff.
We stayed at Sunset Beach Resort, spend the first day out discovering the islands around. The second morning we were getting ready for the day and went for breakfast at the hotel. When we came back after breakfast, two handbags with passports, credit cards, mobile phones and cash were missing. We reported this to hotel staff and asked them to contact police. They refused, so we had to go to the police office at the airport ourself.
We were robbed while having breakfast or at night while sleeping. The door was locked all the time, so it should be someone working at the resort. We have reported the case to police. This didnt make much sense as our passports were missing, we had no money and phones. However, we went back to Kuala Lumpur, visit the embassy and to be sent back home. It was a nightmare - no money, cards, passports, we couldn't continue our "retire trip", had to return airtickets to Singapore, Emirates and hardly get enough to buy tickets back home.
I am not saying every person who stays here will get robbed, but you will be taking a huge risk by doing so.
