Great hotel. Lovely big balcony with great views. Really convenient base for walking up Untersburg and also doing walks and runs around the mountain. The breakfast was great. Very helpful staff. Clean, cosy bedroom.

It's unusual in my experience that someone from the states will be wo a car, but the public transport in Europe is excellent. Get yourself a mobile (downloaded) schedule. Check out the multi day passes. Seems odd that you ask from the teain station or airport. Very few flts serve Salzburg.
You might be surprised to find the Christmas markets still open. There are several. Austrian's will spend their leasure walking and enjoying the coffee houses. There's plenty too see. If the Untersbergbahn is re-opened, take a trip up if you get a clear day.
