Tŷ Newydd Country Hotel presents a contrasting picture, with some guests charmed by its atmosphere and lively events, while others find it outdated. The service is generally well-regarded for its friendliness, though issues with hot water and breakfast have been noted. While the spaciousness of the rooms is acknowledged, critiques often point to their dated style and maintenance concerns.
Amenities and dining experiences receive mixed reviews, with some guests disappointed by discrepancies in what's advertised. The location is a highlight, offering a perfect base for outdoor pursuits, yet opinions on value and cleanliness vary, suggesting room for improvement in heating and thoroughness of housekeeping.

Detailed Reviews
Booked an overnight stay here as part of the "Super Sunday Club Offer". Must admit after going through lockdown with no time to ourselves we were really looking forward to a much needed night away. I heard some negative feedback from work colleagues the week before arriving with regards to the meals not being too great and the customer service being poor. I'm very glad to say this was not the case for our visit and we thoroughly enjoyed. Our offer included a two course Sunday lunch, an evening sharing platter with a bottle of bubbly, breakfast and a Superior room (the Long Meadow Suit which we did pay a little extra for as an upgrade). Yes the rooms look slightly outdated but its a country hotel which is the deco you would expect. The room was spacious, clean and tidy. The TV was a little on the small side but not really an issue. We really enjoyed our Sunday lunch and the beef was cooked perfectly. There was plenty of veg selection and extra gravy. The evening sharing platter was presented really well on a large cheese board with a variety of cooked meat, salad, bread, cheese etc. The restaurant staff in particular done a great job. They were polite and welcoming and always on hand for when we needed anything. All staff had face masks and adhered to covid regulations. There was a one way system throughout the hotel with plenty of signs and sanitiser. Overall we were extremely pleased with our visit and wanted to give credit where credit is due.

Firstly may I compliment the Staff; who work tirelessly, nothing to much trouble, willing to do anything to make sure guests have a lovely stay. Food in the evening very nice and plentiful. We booked a three night bed and breakfast groupon visit which included afternoon tea. Evening meal. Bottle of house wine. The room spacious but bed lumpy ( not good for anyone with back issue ) and pillows poor quality. Very poor sleep. On day one we chose full English breakfast which was delicious. Day two given the choice of bacon roll or sausage roll. When asked why there is no full English we were told because of COVID-19 staff restrictions ? Amongst other reasons, it differed depending who you spoke too. Bacon so cold it didn’t even manage to melt Lurpack spread. There were no problems in the evenIng when having to pay additionally for dining ? Day three no full English again given same choice as day two. At least bacon warm today. When we have paid for full English breakfast it should be served or compensating for what you haven’t delivered to your paying guests. Afternoon tea cakes Tesco / Asda bought not freshly made at Country Hotel . Dusted with icing sugar to hopefully take stale taste away. Lady not sure of name ( she has 13 year old son and 8 year old daughter ) who served afternoon tea, evening meals, & bar in the evening was an absolute treasure, a credit to the hotel, So polite and respectful, when you stay here be prepared to having to make your own bed, clean your room as they do not offer this service at present, the housekeeping team should lift their heads to at least eye level then they would be able to see the cobwebs which are in abundance, maybe even the hotel’s manager take time to inspect what they are doing, all in all location good Staff very good. Hotel doesn’t deliver what guests pay for, not a great advert for Welsh Tourism they should be concerned

Booked one night in room 22. Room was clean and comfortable. It was a shock though to find out that there was no toiletries or even soap in the bathroom. When asked about this at the reception desk was informed soap etc was removed due to covid 19, which seemed odd as we are told to wash hands regularly, and there was a shop a few miles away to buy items. It was a Sunday and the hotel is located out in the countryside, when we enquired about a table for lunch was informed you had to book. The staff did manage to fit us in and the meal was good. I feel when clients book a room that they should be informed about no toiletries and having to book a table for meals. The staff were very friendly and helpful.

We booked through booking. Com the twin room number 29 on arrival a lovely chap showed us to the room.. First thing we noticed was the foisty smell but the windows were open and the biulding is old we presumed it just needed airing
We had a long ride to the hotel in the heat so a quick shower to cool off and we left paying no attention to detail at this point.
Returning to the room in the late evening myself and my partner noticed wood lice by the windows on the carpet they were dead so threw them out.
Thw windows were next to a marquee which had been placed out for social distancing so the noise was unavoidable and minimal however the obly privacy we had was the curtains, no blinds or nets were up.Early hours of the morning a torch light shone in as what we believe was staff walking past the window round the side of the building to the rubbish bins totally ignorant to say there is a path leading to the bins.
After a very uncomfortable sleep i looked at the mattress it was a thin as wafer definitely not suitable for adults. The bed base it Self in poor condition no wonder i ached. On checking my pillow (i know i shoudnt have put myself through this) it was yellow and stained
Aswas looking we then noticed more creepy crawlies but live ones to so after moving the bedside table it became apparent this room had not been deep cleaned!!
Im all for putting back into hotels and eateries but i expect that they also make sure we are staying in a safe enviroment and that the room be disinfected and cleaned
The shower had been updated but again dirty toilet brush and more bugs glad to say i was out of there
The staff however are friendly, we sat out in the garden in the evening and had a drink from the bar he was the same kind man who had shown us to the room he was happy to chat with us
The breakfast was great full english hot and plenty of coffee served to the table within 5 minutes.
On leaving i wanted to feedback the information and showed the lady pictures id taken she said her apologies with what i felt sarcasm. We had already handover negative feedback that had been left on a form in the room from pevious guests so im guessing they had failed to clean it thoroughly and the cleaning fairy had gone on strike
The accessibility would be spot on for disabled but the bed would not suit
Im always happy to pay for a great service service

We were gifted a voucher for our stay as an engagement present and finally got around to using it this week. If we were paying for the stay ourselves I think I would have left the room when we got there.
There is vintage, then there’s just pure old. I’m seven months pregnant and my back was killing me the next day, the mattress was showing through the sheets as they weren’t fitted and it looked ancient.
The carpet was awful and a corner of our room had damp/condensation. There was also spiderwebs on the chandelier.
We booked a double room and we’re put in a family room which is fine but it was nothing like the photos online. The person who gifted us this are gutted as they would never have bought us a voucher for the place if they knew what it was really like - our room was nothing like we expected.
There was also no hand soap in the bathroom (even more important during Covid times) let alone any complimentary shampoo/shower gel.
Our evening meal was lovely although I did have to ask a waitress to clear our table and for more water as we were waiting for so long - it wasn’t busy for that to be an excuse. The breakfast wasn’t as good, everything had obviously been cooked that morning and then was left under heat lamps - we chose the latest time slot (9.15am) for breakfast which was obviously a bad choice as everything had been sat for a while then and the bacon was not edible.
It’s such a shame as the hotel itself is beautiful and could be fabulous if some money was spent on it, especially being so close to the new Zip World. I know times are hard with Covid but some things like visible condensation, spiderwebs and no soap in the bathroom are really easily avoided. I wouldn’t recommend and I wouldn’t return.

We booked a 2 night deal via Groupon which is sometimes a gamble BUT this gamble was definitely worth it and paid off! From the moment we arrived to the moment we left,we felt very welcomed by the lovely staff who were all very friendly and polite. Nothing was too much trouble for them. The room we had (No.15) was massive with all the extras you could want!! The bed was super comfortable and room was very quiet. The staff found out it was our anniversary during our stay and gave us a complimentary bottle of bubbly which was a lovely thought and we were very touched with the sentiment!
The Groupon deal we had included breakfast,a meal with a bottle of wine when dining in the restaurant on the first night and afternoon tea at a time to suit us on our second day. The food from the restaurant was absolutely delicious and portion sizes were very generous. The breakfast was also very good with a lot to choose from a cooked breakfast buffet to cereals, fruit, yoghurt and toast ect. The Afternoon Tea was sooooo yummy with a really good selection which sandwiches, crisps, cakes and scones. We were absolutely stuffed afterwards! The quality of all the food we had was of a very high standard and from a chef who took pride in their work! The bar prices were very reasonable too and there was plenty of places to relax and unwind in the bar area or the lounge by the restaurant.
We were very impressed with all aspects of our stay so don't pay attention to the negative reviews! If you are after a relaxed weekend away and want to enjoy some good food too then this is the hotel for you! Thanks to all the smiley staff who made our stay so lovely and special! Don't change a thing as you have got the balance just right!
We will hopefully be back soon and will spread the good word about this lovely hotel!
Thanks again!

Booked a 2 night stay with afternoon tea evening meal and penderyn tour. Information provided was very limited only told we had to book penderyn ourselves when we asked a few days before and only told we had to pay and claim cost back when we got there.
Afternoon tea was very poor standard likely frozen or supermarket bought cakes. Evening meal was well cooked but the menu was pub chain style and not what you expect from a quality country hotel, particularly given the images advertised and old menus online.
We received a family room which was well equipped, clean and comfortable but we had a view onto the interior roof and had to keep curtains drawn as you can see into the room from the corridor opposite. Unfortunately could not see any of beautiful Brecon. More concerning was the sign in reception advising that any evidence found of food or drink in the room not hotel purchased would incur a £75 fine!
We cancelled the second night and stayed at a much better hotel in Cardiff instead.

We began our 48th wedding anniversary trip on the 9th August at The Gower Hotel and ended up here yesterday on a very wet afternoon. We were relaxed as soon as we met up with two members of staff on reception. The room was obviously old, it is an old hotel with plenty of character and once the television engineer switched his post with reception, we took to the goggle box for a couple of hours before dinner. Immediately impressive was the trouble taken to set the tables well apart. Next, was the friendliness of all the staff who were everywhere with smiles on their faces - a special mention must go to Leah who served us. We were on a Groupon deal which was perhaps a little unfortunate being that it was a night on the government but, overall it was excellent value and there was no fuss in converting two glasses of wine into a bottle and paying the difference, The lady organising her staff was the key figure in that she directed them in an authoritative, but pleasant manner. One can only then say that the two-course meal was excellent, the bed was comfortable, and we had everything we needed with the knowledge that if we were missing anything, we only had to ask. It is not often that I get the chance to write a report before leaving the hotel, but they cannot mess up breakfast, surely? And today is a lovely sunny morning with the gardens looking their best.

Visited for 6 nights in June. This is the worst hotel we have been to in 55 years of marriage. The approach road and all car parking areas are full of potholes. Breakfast was delivered in a paper bag, consisted of bacon/sausage in a bap. two of cakes, orange drinks in cartons, apple or orange or banana. Disgusting, no plates or cutlery. On the last miorning we had a cooked breakfast, but were not asked whether /what we wanted. Bugs in the bed left poo, tv so small could not read anything. Windows can be fully opened to nearly ground level, this is dangerous for the infirm or very young. Staff/manager did not adhere to her own covid rules. The guttering and roof were full of weeds and trees growing nearly everywhere in the guttering. Upon arrival reception area was cluttered with dirty linen, clothes etc. Grass cuttings left on the stairs for three days. Pillows were stained. Manager stated she would take money from my bank account, without my permission. We had to ask for shampoo and as we were staying for 6 nights we had to ask for toilet cleaning stuff. Reception stated " do not tell anybody else " as they should not have given any to the residents. The room literature stated that anything in the waste bin, which did not emanate from the hotel, a fine of £ 25 would be added to the bill. How friendly. in the bathroom a collection of black stuff collected on the sink from the taps. What it was I'm not too sure. I would not give this hotel one star if that was possible

Was thrown out of this hotel a day early as the area went into a Covid 19 lockdown.
The male receptionist on the Wednesday night advised me that I needed to check out a day early as only business people were allowed to stay and was told I would get a full refund for my last nights accommodation
Went down to check out on the Thursday morning to be told by a really, very arrogant female receptionist the I would not get a refund unless I cancelled the room through Booking.com. She promised me that the refund would be processed, but as yet have not received it.
Room not particularly clean, and could really do with redecoration. Booked a room that stated it had a mountain room, but the room (7) I actually got, looked over a dirty conservatory roof.
Very good at the posters all over the place regarding Covid 19, staff all masked up, but cleanliness was a shambles. Two mornings I went down for breakfast and sat on tables that had glass ring marks on from peoples drinks the night before. There was an ashtray in the garden area that was overflowing with fag ends and it was left there for three days!!!
Sanatizing of outside tables did not happen at all and often there were empty glasses on the tables in the morning from the night before.
Therefore, I would not recommend this hotel. They lie to you regarding a refund, and feeling very unsafe due to cleaning problems.
I would not stay here again and I am not really surprised that this area of Wales went into lockdown!!

I would get a taxi, it is quite a long walk and not that we'll lit.
Please check with the hotel directly. They will let you know what they accept.
Dear Pauline, unfortunately we do not provide dressing gowns in the rooms.
Dear David B,
We off cask ale from a local brewery, Grey Trees Brewery, we only have one pump and currently stock "Caradog's". We also provide a selection of bottled ales from Grey Trees Brewery and also from Rhymney Brewery.
