We had the pleasure of staying in a comfortable double room at the Wafu-no-Yado MASUYA with a perfect location near the Snow Monkey Forest. The room itself was immaculate, and we had the option to use either a private bath or a public one. Personally, I found the public bath to be preferable. Additionally, the cuisine offered during our stay, including both breakfast and dinner, was outstanding.

Me and my wife stayed only one night in this ryokan. The good thing about it is that it is located very close to the snow monkey park, just 5 minutes away. We had an amazing dinner experience, one of our best meals in Japan, tasty and with great variety. The hotel is very clean and has a nice public hot bath The only thing is that the rooms are not so big, but we managed ok

An exceptional experience of traditional a Japanese guesthouse. Etiquette was explained so there weren't any embarrassing missteps, decor was subtle, rooms were very comfortable (ours had private bathroom facilities - rare to find with this style of accommodation), exceptional attention by staff (right down to directing traffic for our parking and departure), delicious traditional Japanese breakfast (catered for coeliac diners easily), tasteful onsen in house. Quiet street, easy walking distance to many local restaurants; snow monkey park not far away (5-8mins by car); free outdoor parking next door. We rate this exceptionally high and would love to stay again.

After arriving Yudanaka station, hotel shuttle already there waiting for their guests. Shuttle driver was a young lady wearing kimono! Hotel is a very traditional Onsen. There are two natural hot springs one for ladies and one for men. Both have indoor and outdoor spa. Dinner was decent and tasty for an Onsen, We are so impressed by so many different collection of plates they used to serve customers. Service was excellent. Free shuttle was provided to the starting point to enter snow monkey park. From the back side of the Onsen, it is the starting point to walk into Onsen Street. We photographed all nine public baths on the street. It is a sign of good luck if you visit them all.

We chose this place to stay for two nights after our daughter made it clear we should be going to visit the monkeys at the Jigokudani Monkey Park, and we weren’t disappointed. The village itself might be a bit disappointing - don’t expect too much as it’s a little bit run down, with modern buildings, factories etc, and it’s only at the area containing the community hot springs that reflects ‘old’ Japan. Nevertheless, it’s a great base for the monkey park, and easily accessible by train or bus. They ryokan itself is also in a relatively modern 4 storey building, but in all other respects is a traditional inn. The rooms are comfortably furnished, with everything needed, although the bathroom was on the smaller side. The real pluses were the staff, the service and the food - all excellent. From being unexpectedly met at the station when we arrived (we told them we were arriving earlier than the 3.00 check in time) to when one of the staff found us on the platform when we were leaving to hand over a piece of jewellery my daughter had left in the room, the staff and their service were brilliant. We booked half board and the multiple course kaiseki dinners and breakfasts were a delight. I don’t think there are Western choices, but when in Japan… The public onsen at the ryokan are great, and we took a private one for an hour so we could soak together. If there were any downsides, even though it was mid January, the indoor temperatures seemed to be set at around 30 degrees - open windows were the relief. Lastly, it’s not cheap, but we thought it was value for money all things considered, and recommended.

Outstanding customer service and level of cleanliness. They went out of their way to make sure we were taken care of. We gave them a call an hour in advance to get picked up from Yudanaka station and they also drove us to the monkey park and back to the station giving us time to enjoy the immaculate onsens (the public onsens were empty whilst I was there) and an excellent massage by an elderly blind couple. The couple were very sweet and arrived on time, we kindly ask the hotel to notify future customers that they will need to pay in cash to the couple as we weren’t sure if we pay the couple on the spot or pay the hotel at the end of our stay, either way the massage was excellent and I hope the elderly couple are fairly paid for their efforts. When we arrived at our room, the hotel had a cute tea arrangement and set up futons in the bedroom when we went out for dinner. After reading alot reviews, I believe that the hotel truly values constructive feedback and have made efforts to improve accordingly, for eg. Hiring staff who spoke English. Overall we really enjoyed the experience, and wouldn't hesitate to book them again in the future. Through our entire Japan trip this was the most memorable as the hotel made us feel like a VIP.

Nice comfortable room with private outdoor onsen. Delicious Kaiseki dinner and breakfast Very friendly and kind staff. They have a electric bike for you to ride around town and even provide you an umbrella to the snow monkey when it was showing. They provide pick up from the train station, send you to the snow monkey and help you deliver you luggage to the station. They have a public indoor and outdoor onsen too. The only small problem is that they do not speak fluent English. Other than that the stay was perfect!

Masuya is located along the Main Street with a back door that leads directly to the Shibu Onsen street. The ryokan is well-kept and very clean with 2 large Onsens with both outdoor and indoor baths available. The amenities provided were Pola brand. The staff were friendly and polite though they didn’t seem to speak much English. One hiccup though was in spite of communicating the exact time of arrival at the train station and receiving a confirmation; the hotel had to be given a call by the staff at the local train station to come by to pick us.

We stayed here to visit the Snow monkeys. The price included breakfast and dinner which were good traditional Japanese and very enjoyable. We have had better food however at cost of maybe 7000 yen for 2 together. The staff is incredibly courteous and the private Onsen (at 2200 yen extra fee) is the best Onsen experience we've had in Japan. The problem however sits in the facts that this hotel is >2x the price of any other we've stayed in Japan. That while the beds were the worst we stayed in (we've also slept on the ground at the monks in Koya-San which was more comfortable), the shower was completely unusable (no temperature or water direction/ flow control, no water pressure) and to top it off the toilet smelled like bad sewage which at times extended into the rooms. All in all a very mixed experience combining the best and worst we've had in Japan. For this price it is not at all what we expected. Very unfortunate but true. If you want to see the Snow Monkeys, I would recommend staying in Nagano and making it a day trip instead. You'll have a better hotel at half the price and Nagano is actually quite a nice city, well worth spending a night.

We heard so much about ryokans so we wanted to try it. We weren’t disappointed. The ryokan was 12 minute walk from Yudanaka station. When we arrived by train there was a driver with the sign for the ryokan. Easy peasy. We had to leave our shoes every time we enter the ryokan. Place was very clean and quite. Our room had a outdoor bath which was so amazing. It’s very cold and you can see snow but the bath is wonderfully hot! The room was very nice but don’t expect a soft bed. We didn’t sleep on futons but it was still quite a hard bed. Shibu Onsen is a 2 minute walk. Didn’t use the onsen as our outside bath was good enough. The meals were amazing! So tasty and beautifully presented. Staff were very helpful and managed to communicate okay with limited English. As much as we loved our 3 day stay, would go for the kaiseki dinner no more than twice. It’s was very rich and filling so 3 nights was a bit too much! But no complaints about ryokan.
