My 14-year-old son and I had been to Hokkaido during 21-27 July 2012 as a part of 35 people tour group. On 22 July, we stayed overnight at this hotel. I have to admit that I didn't get use to
a small hotel room like this. Anyway, I eventually found that the room was well designed. No space was useless. My son enjoyed onsen very much. Before bedtime, the hotel staff prepared
the futons for us. We slept like a log all night long.
Just a few hotel staff understand English, but they were very helpful. The breakfast here was quite good. There were variety of food to choose. The only problem I had was that there was no WIFI in the hotel room. We had to go downstair to the lobby to surf the free internet.

When in Sounkyo, 1 onsen ryokan will make you happy. And that is Sounkyo Kanko. Let me list my personal feeling about this charming hotel:

1) Very convenient proximity to the Daisetsuzan National Park, where you can enjoy superb nature beauty and a mountain ski facility, just a 10 minutes walk from the hotel.

2) Wonderful bento styled meals and a wide range of dishes at it's restaurants and the food is superb ! A reserved kaiseki dinner will be a wonderful way to end a fun-filled evening in the wintry months.

3) The spacious onsen (currently indoor) is excellent and an outdoor open-air onsen is slated to open in 2015 fall (around Aug). Do check out with the hotel when you make a reservation. It will be the biggest in Sounkyo and guarantees to be an amazing experience.

4) The room is spacious, very comfy and the sleep quality is superb. The only grouse I have is that it does not come with hair dryer (not sure about other room though). However, if you visit the onsen prior bed time, it's no issue as the onsen have all the amenities you need - hair dryer, toiletries, cotton buds, towels, etc. As the hotel is built on a slope, do take note that different section of the hotel reflect the elevation according. So do orientate yourself.

5) The staff is really polite and professional. So it makes staying this hotel just that much more pleasant. That's make a holiday just that much more memorable.

So the verdict---will I stay at this hotel again in my future Hokkaido trip ? A definite YES! for the food, beautiful scenery, onsen ..... :)

This is a nationally-designated tourist hotel. That being the case, the hotel is setup to do trade in servicing large tour groups. The staff are all extremely eager to please, but their ability to be helpful may be somewhat limited by the amount of English they speak. So if you have very little Japanese, please take note of this if considering the Sounkyo Kanko for your visit to the gorgeous Daisetsuzan National Park.

The setting is idyllic, right on the banks of the raging Ishikari river. The facility itself feels dated, although well-maintained and clean. Bookings generally come with "half-board" which is breakfast and dinner. These are generally buffet-style hosted in a good-sized dining room with great views of the Ishikari. If you happen to be visiting when large tour groups are present, meals can get a little hectic. The staff keep up competently and the spread is very decent, especially for dinner. Both Chinese and Japanese options are available.

The onsen facilities are of average cleanliness. There are indoor and outdoor baths. The bath products are mid-range and acceptable. Remember to bring your small cleaning towel from the room with you. Bath towels are available at the counter.

The rooms are traditional with a very charming entryway-portico. An anteroom leading to toilets and baths on one side and the rooms on the other. The tatami floors are clean and well-maintained. A small enclosed balcony is a very nice touch.

An average choice of onsen. Don't expect luxury. Utilitarian, clean and traditional.

I have been visiting Japan for over 30 years and Japan has always provided me with great experiences until now. This Sounkyo Kanto is the first bad experience I encountered in Japan. Hotel is old, operate and managed as if it is in the 70s. Service is bad, staff not friendly, room smells and the food is absolutely terrible by any standard. It caters to low cost tour groups. Avoid this place at all cost. Not even deserving a single star. We paid $150 per night for this hell hole.

We rented a traditional Japanese room for 2 adults and 1 child. The room is spacious for 3 of us with a very nice view facing the mountain and river. We arrived around 6pm during autumn, so it is quite dark already and the wind is very chilling outside. The lobby is very warm and comfortable.

After putting our stuffs in the room, dinner buffet is provided with a large variety of food at the 2nd floor which apparently 3 floors below the lobby.

When we come back to the room, the room has been turned down. We didn't realize that there is turn down service in this hotel, which is a nice service as they prepare the futon, etc so it is ready for us to rest.

My daughter and I tried the onsen which apparently a mixed men and women onsen. It is really nice outdoor hot bath with the chilling wind blowing to our face while the hot water is warming our body. Our daughter loves it so much that she didn't want to finish.

The downside of this hotel is its checkout time. The check-out time is 10AM which is a bit too rush for us with small kid. If we want to climb to Kurodake, either we climb very early and come back before 10 AM for checkout, or we checkout earlier than that and put our luggage in the car before climbing up.

This is an old style hotel, small room with small bathroom. Onsen is normal. The food is a bit disappointed because there were too crowded, and the food choices not much with normal taste. Only a small gift shop at lobby, if you want some light supper, there is a 7-11 nearby, but it's very dark at night to walk there. Wifi is slow and only available at lobby. Not recommended to stay here.

The Kanko Hotel is located only a 5min walk from the centre of the village of Sounkyo. Driving into Sounkyo you will see it on your right hand side, just before the bridge.

Stepping into this hotel is like taking a time capsule back to the 70s or 80s!! The carpets and walls are covered in psychadelic patterns, while the lifts attempt to dissect you if you're even a millisecond too slow getting in!

In saying that, it wasn't a bad place to stay. The rooms are large and clean, but do look like they've been in use for some time.

The four(?) onsens located downstairs are incredible! This was our first experience in an onsen and absolutely loved it. Lots of different pools to choose from at varying levels of water temperature.

The buffet is worth the room rate alone! Platters of various kinds of sashimi, crab claws, ramen, noodles, the list goes on and you can eat as much as you like!!

The English language skills were non-existent in all but one of the ladies at the front desk. While this didn't pose us any problems, it could be an issue if you had a complex problem to resolve.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Kanko, but did feel that it was over priced for what you got.

For more info about the hotel and the town of Sounkyo itself (including instructions on how to get there!), feel free to drop by my travel blog at www.andrewstrikis.wordpress.com

Andrew.

Thehotel is just a 5-10 minutes drive away from the sounkyo gorge. The exterior of the hotel looks simple but i personally thought the facilities are more than adequate. The convenience store is just 5 minutes away. Apparently, the hotel does has a old wing and new wing, and obviously the new wing looks better.

The onsen is located at basement one of the hotel and they actually has this couple's room for rental if you want some private times at the onsen with your loved ones or family. Do booked early though to avoid disappointments.

There is free wifi access at the lobby and there is actually a corner at the lobby for smokers where there is free beverages like coffee and water. Dinner and breakfast at level 2.

The dinner buffet is good enough and breakfast adequate. All in all, an above average onsen hotel.
