If you are on a road trip looking for a property called the Jemputree Hotel & Eco Resort, you won't find it. After failing to do so ourselves, we called the number provided and were told the name had been changed some months ago. "Oh?", we said, "We passed that place quite some time ago" and wasted time backtracking to the renamed and well-signed Banding Lakeside Inn as it is now known. Perhaps for our troubles, we were allocated an unusually spacious room for the money that had a large balcony overlooking the lake and surrounding forest. It is a peaceful setting. Not uncommonly as we have discovered with Malaysian hotels, a) many of the power points were dead, which meant boiling the kettle was done on the opposite side of the room to the coffee and tea stand, and computer power wasn't available at a desk or bedside and b) there were signs of iron burn marks on the carpet. The pool was lacking any outdoor furniture, with no seats or sun lounges and nowhere to leave a towel except on the ground. The water was at least clean but we didn't feel inclined to return for a second swim. An average hotel with an average restaurant that wasn't over endowed with friendly staff but there is nowhere else to eat, so you are a captive audience. If it weren't for the serenity of the location, there wouldn't be much else going for it.…
