Even though we booked a twin room, they kindly upgraded us to a triple room which is truly spacious and very comfortable for our family. The hotel is built of logs and very nice. They have twin/triple rooms (each room comes with 2 levels - bedroom upstairs, living/bath and balcony downstairs). They also have log cottages on the hotel ground which is suitable for larger families or groups to stay. The outside scenery is wonderfully tranquil and magically white with snow. Hotel is by Lake Kanayama but it was frozen while we were there. The drive into the hotel from the main road 237 took us about 20-30minutes, and we spotted some deers on the mountain slopes while driving in. We took the full set dinner, which we thought was nice though not wonderful (compared to what we had at La Collina pension which was simpler but better suited to our tastes). I would say for what we paid at this hotel, what we got was really value for money though. Service was friendly and excellent. My emails was fairly replied. English communication is not be a problem here. The hotel manager took the trouble to see us off on our check out day (even helped us to take a family photo in front of the hotel). A lovely hotel and we would stay here again.
The cottage was wonderful with a spacious living area with small kitchenette and lounge with a large veranda.outside. It all looks exactly like the photos on the website with two floors. The cottages are set in nice grounds and you can park right outside the cottage. When we arrived the BBQ had been set up for us.
The staff were very friendly and spoke English. I would definitely recommend the Larch Log and especiallu if you can get the special offer.
Once again, we were NOT disappointed. It's in a fantastic location ... you can access 3 different ski resorts (Furano; Sahoro & Tomamu Ski areas) all within one hour, by car.
There are popular cottages to stay in, but we chose the convenience of the hotel - no need to get cold moving around the hotel, that way. The rooms in the hotel are very spacious. We stayed in a triple room with a maisonette style ... the toilet, bathroom; living room with a huge 2 parts sofa are downstairs and the 3 beds (evenly spaced) are upstairs. It's so quiet at night, when the snow or ice slides off the room, it can wake you suddenly ... ha! ha!
(Having also stayed in a huge well-known hotel in Furano - the no hustle'n'bustle, just peace and quiet of The Larch is sanely fantastic...)
The bathroom and toilet are separate and are both clean and spacious. The closet could be a bit bigger (esp. with bulky ski wear), but there are plenty of hangers. The central heating is not too hot and can be adjusted. The large verandah (although freezing) is great to sit down (at the plastic table and chairs) and just enjoy the view - for a little while - too chilly, for too long.
You can do your washing there ... they have 2 washing machines and 2 dryers, above the reception. They're reasonably priced ...
The meals are great. They're not exactly huge, but with all the freshest local ingredients. They consist of several courses, beautifully arranged. At brekkie, if you're lucky enough ... you will also get to see the beautiful Jays come in for a feed.
The hotel also provide play items: sleds; snowshoes etc., for guests.
The only downside ... is that the hotel does offer a hot spring bath centre ... but, it's not within walking distance (in winter). It's about 3-5 mins by car. It's old ... (that's probably why we had it all to ourselves???) and the change areas lacked amenities ... but, the hot bath is great! Unfortunately, they don't have an outside bath, either.
Overall it's a fantastic hotel, for our needs. The staff are very friendly & helpful. We will undoubtedly stay again ...
We visited again in May 2015 and the weather was warm and the place was pleasant. It has a try log cabin feel and rooms are rustic but adequate. Meals served at the dining room were very good indeed. All that for a reasonable price!
The room had 3 big super single beds upstairs and there is heater. Only complaint was the converted single sofa bed I slept on downstairs wasn't comfortable at all.
Our room rate included French dinner and breakfast and the French cuisine was excellent!!!!!! Love the ambience in the restaurant and the tranquil misty greenery surroundings. Really wonderful unique hotel, hope I have a chance to stay there again next time!
The dining experience was also unusual with set dinner (fusion french/japanese) which was yummy. The service was excellent.
The hotel was arranged by Hokkaido Treasure Island Travel who organised our private tour. Would defintely recommend to stay here when in Furano
We booked the place almost 2 months ahead and had requested for hotel to allow us to book half-board at the restaurant onsite. But we were advised that the kitchen was under maintenance during the 2 days of our stay. However, when we arrived, we saw meals being served to other guests. So we checked with the restaurant captain and was told we could have the meals if we had booked in advance. When we approached the front desk to clarify, we were again being told the kitchen was under maintenance. It was unfortunate that they insisted we could not have any meal at the restaurant during our stay cause "kitchen under maintenance". We were hoping to enjoy some of their "french cuisine" there. But anyway, our children had a chance to showcase their cooking skill and we had simple meals instead. To get food, the nearest town would be Minamifurano station (about 9 km drive from the hotel) or further town will be Furano (about 45km drive away).
Lake kanayama was frozen and white with snow.
The drive in along kanayama lake is pretty quiet.
Must bring along food for dinner n breakfast.
Kids had so much fun playing outside lodge
The log hotel is beautiful, our room has balcony , sitting area with bathroom on the ground level then 2 twin beds up the stairs, all made of logs. the corridors into the rooms was also great for photos.
our package included french dinner and japanese breakfast, both were delicious though we'd have liked a bigger portion! Price is very reasonable too..all that foe under 20,000 JPY. We love to come back in spring or summer to see the lake and the surrounding forrest!
Not sure if they have double beds in other rooms, would be nice if we had one, such cold weather & the hotel is so romantic yet we had to sleep in diff beds!
The only downside is there is no onsen for such large establishment, they did hand out free tickets to go to a nearby public bath house (about 2 mins by car) , wouldnt recommend it, not exactly clean, I'd rather shower in the room;s small bathroom!
