This is a very specific experience. Staying in a local temple (pilgrim house) run by monks, who can only speak elementary English seems somehow weird. The wooden building, room covered with tatami, traditional however fully equipped with modern toilet. Sleeping on futons. Traditional vegetarian dinner is a very special experience. Majority of nicely laid food pieces you cannot recognise. Some...

The temple is quiet and modest but is perfectly in line with koyasan atmosphere. The room was a typical Japanese room and it was very clean. The food is an acquired taste but if you like it is great! The monks are kind and welcoming! You even get to experience the morning service! It was a great stay!! Highly recommended!!!!

Very nice stay in a lovely room. The room was quite large and included a toilet. We slept very comfortably on the futons they set up for us. The heat worked well, which was nice since we stayed in December. Overall, the temple was very quiet and peaceful and the location was convenient and easy to access, as are most...

Great location near Okunoin in Koyasan, this temple has clean tatami-style rooms and great food. Visitors are expected to bathe in the onsen before dinner and are woken for monk chanting early in the morning before breakfast. The interior of the temple is quite large but rather unremarkable, though it offers two separate gardens your room may open out to....

I've actually stayed at Hejoko-in twice (both of the times I've been to Mt. Koya), so I would definitely recommend it. Despite what others say about the food, I found it all to be delicious and consider one of the meals to be the best I've ever had in Japan. You do have to get up early and attend the...

It has been nice to share with other people and briefly with the monks their temple. We enjoyed our stay, the accommodation was nice and peaceful.(clean and tidy) Food is not great, but doesn't matter, you can survive.

We are a french couple in our sixties, travelling 1 month in Japan, in November 2013. We stay 1 night in this "chukubô" (accomodation in à temple) and were delighted. The place is of course very quiet and we had à very nice night here. The room was very confortable, with toilet. The common bath is for men before 5:30pm...

I was travelling with my husband and parents. We chose Henjokoin because my parents wanted their own toilet in the room. This meant that we were in the newer section of the temple. I can't comment on how it was different from the older section, or from other temples. The room was large and had a good heater. When we...

Room was big, spacious, and very nice indeed. The food was VERY good. Probably the best and certainly the most varied and interesting vegan food we've had. The staff were a little reserved, but they're monks so to be expected I guess. Morning chanting was... an experience. Well placed for Okunoin cemetary which is well and truly out of this...

From our experience at a temple in Koyasan the previous night, we knew more or less what to expect at this, our second temple stay. We were pleasantly surprised to find our room spacious and at least double the size of our previous night's accommodation, with a private toilet and bathroom (sink). Our room was very quiet, clean, roomy. It...
