Howdy mate - Sanga Onsen in Kurokawa is easily accessed by JR train from Kumamoto or Fukuoka using a JR pass. Simply ride the lovely red train to Mt. Aso station & the courtesy buses pick you up from the station & deliver you to your Onsen.
Two points of interest for me were:
1. The switch back railway system to help the train make it's way up the steep climb to Mt. Aso. I'm not train buff but even I found that to be very interesting; and
2. The amazing scenery as the train winds it's way through the lovely rurals of Kyushu towards Mt. Aso. Stunning!!
Food tip - As you depart the train & before you cross the line to the exit, there's a magical little bistro that I later saw featured on NHK TV about Mt. Aso. The food, ambiance & views make it a 'must visit'.
Instead we trotted across to the station, checked how long before the shuttle bus arrived and ate at the station Udon shop. We didn't know that just 20 meters away was this amazing cafe. Damn!!!
Helpful people - The JR people & tourist information lady at Mt. Aso station are all very helpful and will assist with timetable, directions or what ever else they can. Great guys.
I just wish they had of told me about the bistro/cafe on the other side of the railway tracks. Oh well I'll just have to make a return visit & do it better. ;-)
