Good points: The location cannot be beat, with the restaurant and outdoor bath overlooking the sea. Soyotei is right beside a gorgeous beach, so you can sleep with the sound of waves crashing, the smell of fresh salty air, and cool breezes. The rooms are spacious, and ours had a large balcony with a view of the sea across the...

This gracious mom-and-pop place is full of charm and the setting is absolutely unbeatable. It was definitely one of the highlights of our Japan trip. The dark wood bungalows roll down the lush hillside to the common open-air hall that juts out over the sea where you can enjoy breakfast, and sunset dining. There is a gorgeous little beach right...

This is easily the best ryokan our family has stayed at, and their prices are very reasonable! We had two large rooms, a small tea room and a terrace with sea view for our family, which was perfect. Also, we loved the food, it is simple but you can clearly taste the freshness of the produce and it's a different...

My wife and I spent a night at this historical inn. We reserved a room that was far larger than we realized (they informed us that two families with kids could stay there). It was a joy to be in a place with such character (very wabi sabi). Dinner was amazing: fresh just caught fish cooked over coals in the...

Soyotei offers spacious Japanese-style rural accommodation overlooking a beautiful beach on the quiet side of Yakushima Island. It can be challenging for a non-Japanese speaker but well worth a bit of awkwardness to experience family-run rustic Japanese accommodation. We arrived in the pouring rain and were shown the ropes by the owner: umbrellas and outdoor wet shoes were seamlessly provided...

Dark, stormy, wild swells marching into the beach and a howling wind. Yes, typhoon approaching. Felt safe and secure and slept well but needed to head towards the port before all transport stopped. So, had only one night. Food was simple, tasty, well-presented; owner family were friendly and we shared some shochu and conversations after dinner. Tatami room very spacious....

Rating: 4-3/4 stars Soyotei was a special, unique, and magical place. The family and staff were kind and welcoming. The tatami room was spacious, airy, and comfortable. The architecture and setting of the cedar buildings on a quiet hill overlooking the ocean were wonderful. The dining room on the edge of the ocean offered outstanding views. The meals were always...

Wonderfull unspoiled place, with unique architecture in cedar wood from Yakushima, the house was built on century ago and the owners moved it, next to the most beautiful beach of Yakushima. The cedar Bathroom and onsen into the rocks are awsome. The food is simply amazing, as they are a fishermen family, you eat sophisticated, yet simple, fresh seafood every...

It is a very fine inn with a wonderful hot spring near the breaking waves. Good for a couple of nights but no more. The food is ok but monotonous after two nights. The owners are friendly but too invasive and the obsan never shuts up. Also beware they charge 800 yen for a cup of instant coffee.

Soyotei was a wonderful jewel in our two and a half week trip to Japan. The surroundings are unique and set on a long sandy beach where sea turtles lay their eggs. The meals are a wonderful representation of the local area; while we were there, we dined on flying fish, grouper, deer, local barnacles. The meals are very thoughtfully...
