We stayed 5 nights and the nights where terrible. The room are very basic. A bed and a fan. Thats it. The window is just a hole in the wall that you can close at night with shutters. At daybreak (sometimes 3am) the power goes down so byebye fan and say halo to the heath. At night there is a lot of noise so take earplugs. BUT! When you leave your room and go out on the deck you forget everything. The view is stunning! There is a lot of room to read, relax and sunbathe. You can jump directly into the water and go snorkeling. There is a reef not far from there so you can swim directly to it whiteout using a boat. They give you a life-vest, flippers and snorkeling gear free of charge. The diving gear isn't really well maintained and the instructors aren't the professional so it isn't the best place to dive with.
Breakfast consists of eggs, noodles, biscuits, thee and water. If asked they will prepare lunch for you.
To get to the homestay you have to walk on a very fragile pier built out of thin slats of wood. Not for the fainthearted!! There is a good place to eat in the evening when you walk down the pier an go directly left.

Basic room, salt water for shower, and if you take dive package with them, the 3x meals is included with the room package which is good! every morning, wait for the local gypsy with their small boat to sell crabs, slipper lobsters, prawn, fishes for super cheap price. I will then pass to the chef for them to cook for my lunch & dinner meal for FREE! no extra charges on that. the staffs are friendly, we went for fishing at the homestay area and barely jumped in the sea at any times! the homestay is a water homestay and budget stay so it was worth with the price paid for!

As is stated several time Spheredivers is a home stay- it is not a high end resort, you do not get private cabins but you do get world quality diving for a super cheap price.

Of course the cheapness has a cost. For example a buddy team had a high-pressure hose simply snap and disintegrate while at 20m. Luckily they were calm and buddy breathed to the surface, as the dive guide didn't notice and continue used the dive.

And wash your own gear... Actually set it up too.

The staff ARE super into their macro life and the owner and head instructor are REALLY into their photography (which is why we came) both of these guys were alert, engaging and truly interested in diving and smiling - the others not so much (I'm not too sure they are certified to dive let alone teach either)

The food: I'm confused about the food as we had read too many great reports on the food prior to our stay we were let down. The main 'chef' was away for the first week of our stay but as he also seemed to be leading dives there was NO change in food when he got to work. By no change i want to be very clear, we are the same thing every meal, everyday. If you like fried fish, boiled eggs, garlic bread and ginger/garlic steamed veggies you'll be in heaven.

If sourcing your own food on the island good luck (aside from the resorts there is very little to choose from) we found a lovely dirt-floor, family-ran shack in the village for a little variety.

Our first night was in one of the rooms over the water with a private bathroom (book one of these!!) It was simple but clean and breezy. The rest of our stay as in the original building with shared bathroom. Shared bathrooms are shared bathrooms, not super clean, not always hot enough and not always available but again i remind you YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR.

::Back to the diving::
The schedule is super relaxed (we wrote our own dives and sites on the schedule) we found the staff to be super flexible in terms of schedule and divesite selection. They laid on special trips at our request and spent hours looking for specific wildlife. We did not dive Sipadan as we had come straight from a liveaboard for that but a couple did and had great experiences with the company they were sent with.

We stayed nearly two weeks which was way too long. A couple of days is not enough to decompress so I'd recommend a week and dive as much as humanly possible, it really is great diving (get to P1 wreck and Kalalai) plus with electricity only running 5pm-6am what else will you do?

WiFi and social media addicts don't bother there is none of either- bring a book!

We booked the accommodation to go diving sipadan.
The stay is basic, but really oké. The food is not amazing but again it's oké.
The diving was really a terrible experience.
We decided to do few Mabul dives before going to Sipadan.
When we first checked our gear, somethings were wrong: the safety-regulator was stuck so all air was coming out, we only had 150 bar in our tank, the bcd closure was Broken.
They put on other regulator and new tanks.
On our second dive my girlfriend's regulator tube snapped. We were 20m deep. Her air tank was drainin rapidly. So in all panic we went up fast. Our divemaster didn't even notice it. Half an hour later he surfaced. He didn't care. Only looked at the gear.
This could have gone terribly wrong!
The tube of the regulator was just so old that it snapped.
Their attitude was really wrong towards the whole situation.
Didn't pay for any of the dives and didn't dive with them again.
If you do, check your gear really good!!

Sipadan & Mabul diving is World class - It's almost unbelievable.
There are turtles on every dive, schools of Jack fish and humphead parrots surrounded with reef sharks and numerous smaller fish with beautiful colorful coral.
Muck diving and walls at Mabul are also very very good - Azhar is excellent DM and Bonny finds all the interesting stuff while Ady prepares the tasty food.

Nowadays it's very safe there, the army and police guard both Mabul and Sipadan.
This was important since we went there with our kids 8y & 10y.

On Mabul island and Spheredivers life is very simple, but something magical happens at Spheredivers.
They took excellent care of us, from the moment when we arrived at Semporna pier.
You live on the water, dive, eat well, dive more, sleep, relax, dive again and you become part of the family.
When you get hot - just dip into house reef with morays, scorpion fish, anemones w clowns, etc. - kids loved that!

Sea gypsies are part of Mabul experience, as well as diving under the former oil rig where there is also plenty of fish.

Part of our heart will always stay with Spheredivers - and we will definitely be back there.
Thank you Ady, Bonny and of course Azhar for an amazing experience we will never forget!
