Beautiful building in well-kept grounds, surrounded by tea plantations and friendly locals. What’s not to like? Well quite a few things but let’s start with the positives. The rooms – if a bit tatty in parts – were full of character and it was relaxing to sit out on the balconies to read, watch the monkeys and listen to the... More

Right in the middle of hectares of tea plantations is this bungalow that epitomises the 'box wallah' culture of the colonial era. Calm and green with soothing views and chirping sounds, it takes you into another era. The staff are really attentive and make this stay truly memorable.

We arrived quite early in the day, and were able to select which room we used. As some of the beds were small doubles, we opted for what appeared to be the largest, for comfort for two large Europeans! The beds had very thin mattresses on solid baseboards, the sheets were imperfectly laundered, and the provision of towels was sparse.... More

The fresh air, the vast rooms, the beautifully appointed place, were all balm to my urban soul. The gardens soothed, and all around, outside the compound was more greenery. This renovated tea bungalow is beautifully maintained, with comfortable beds, and long corridors that gleam in the light. The public rooms are beautifully appointed. The service is wonderful, more Tea Garden... More

This early 20th century ex-tea-managers house on the Gatoonga (Trustea) Estate near Jorhat has been converted to a guesthouse with 8 bedrooms. Its one of three properties on the same tea estate and is known as Banyan Grove due to the immense Banyan tree in the garden. In plan view the bedrooms form the upper arms of a Y, with... More

This is a fantastic tea planters building with about 7 sizeable rooms set in immaculate gardens with the most extraordinary banyan tree in the grounds - variously 200 or 400 years old depending on who you're talking to. It's all very quiet and peaceful and a short walk from tea plantations. Jorhat is a 30 minute drive away. As a... More

Located in the middle of a delightful tea estate is a wonderful old building boasting a magnificent 200-year-old banyan tree and a lot of history. Just touring the property, looking at the pictures on the walls and seeing the different rooms is a treat. A highlight is simply standing on the corner of the road in the morning and watching... This hotel is a beautiful historical building within lovely manicured garden grounds and surrounding tea estates. The 200 year old banyan tree is incredible. The outside tiled veranda wraps the whole building with great seating. The sitting room is very regal and the staff were kind enough to light the fire for us during our winter stay. The breakfast was... More

Some of the comments in other reviews are right, this charming hotel, once a tea planter's bungalow, could be greatly improved by a little more maintenance, simple things such as ensuring taps are properly fixed to hand basins. However, don't be put off by this! The bungalow really is charming, comfortable and interesting. It is set in large, delightful (and... More
