A disappointing stay - dark, sweltering rooms with limited privacy/security and overpriced food. We were greeted by a large number of barking dogs running at us, which would be alarming to most people - even dog lovers. The place has a lot of character, and the owners are nice people. However, the lack of amenities and discomfort coupled with high... More

We're sorry this couple felt disappointed. They arrived from London and planned to stay with us for one night. This time of year, it is indeed quit hot and humid, especially if you're not yet acclimatized to the tropics. However, the bedrooms all have fans and lots of windows and doors (with security bars). The Banyan cottage, our largest and... More

We stayed in one of the cottages at Balenbouche Estate for one night before staying elsewhere on the island. The cottages are quaint and lovely, and the estate is full of beautiful surprises. There is an old sugar mill slowly being overtaken by an enormous Banyan tree which is simply breathtaking, and a short walk through the estate takes you... More

We rented the Almond cottage for our family (two adults with a child and a baby) and were very sattisfied. The estate is wonderful with old trees, lots of plants and flowers and an impressive ruin! The cottage is very big with good beds (with mosquito nets), lovely decoration and enough storage space. The highlight is the outside shower! The... More

A stopping point on a cruise ship tour. A quick walk round the house - not impressive - then into the grounds. Here is a lovely spot with remnants of the old mill. Would not make a special visit but it looked like a good place to stay.

We stayed at the Calabash Cottage at the Balenbouche Estate for 4 nights and it was such a fun experience! The Estate is managed by a lovely Austrian woman named Uta and her two daughters. We loved being greeted by all the friendly dogs that live on the estate, and our breakfast provided by Uta each morning was delicious. There... More

WE CAME TO DO PHOTOGRAPHY: After a warm greeting we ventured out armed with cameras to explore this wonderful location in hopes of capturing its charm and splendor. I found myself enjoying the peace and tranquility; so much natural beauty along with the artifacts from a bye gone era, truly an enchanting sensation. The remnants of the sugar mill nestled... More

We got married at a nearby resort and the day after, got dressed up again and went to take photos at different locations. We stopped at Balenbouche and were not disappointed. Upon driving in, someone came out of the house to say hello. We met the owner (very nice German woman) who told us sure, no problem to use her... More

Still run by the family of the original owners and delightfully restored, this old plantation once had its own sugar/molasses refinery driven by a still intact water wheel. The gardens are delightful and well maintained and they have converted this historic location to a tourist venue with small villas on site.

I lead a yoga retreat at Balenbouche last week & was so happy to offer my participants such a sweet slice of paradise. The grounds are beautiful as are the accommodations. Everything the site says is accurate: the buildings are integrated into the larger environment so a lot is open air. As such, bugs and the natural world are a... More

“Frangipani is really the win. However, if you're traveling as a group or with kids either Almond or Banyan is a good bet. There's more privacy in Almond. However, Banyan was sort of my favorite! It felt a bit Southeast Asian in flavor.”

“Note that rooms (cottages) are charming, unique, and have all the basics including kitchenware, fridge, stove. That said, the basics are basic--no A/C and nothing is particularly new. Everything is open to the outdoors.”

“Banyan cottage is large and well appointed. Be prepared for when you hear the first mango hit the rood in the night though, this caught us by surprise! Mosquito nets and insect precautions are a must, accommodation is naturally ventilated, which comes with extra evening guests!”
