A really friendly place to stop for a hot or cold drink. We walked up from Bad Aussee which took about an hour following the Traun along a lovely foot path. When the path ends in Altausee you head left up the hill to the center of town. Pass the Information Center and you will see the hotel. The balcony overlooks the lake and you can linger all afternoon if you like. Great coffee and beer choices. More

In former years this was undoubtedly a very grand hotel; you can see the Victorian and Edwardian features in some of the public rooms, like magnificent mirrors and antique furniture. Situated on the shore of the Altausseer Lake, the view from our room balcony and the veranda of the dining area was stunning. We were surprised initially as to how deserted the hotel was; a friendly and greeting from the receptionist who was slightly surprised that we asked to book a meal for 7.30pm. We soon discovered why. It would appear that the Hotel has out-sourced their dining room and it is more of a coffee and cake café rather than a restaurant. The food we were served for dinner was from a very limited menu, the soup was very poor indeed, and the Spätzle quite appalling; we declined to pay for it. The breakfast was entirely adequate - but not really up to what you would expect from a 4-star Hotel. Indeed, the Hotel am See is little more than a bed-and-breakfast establishment basking in its...
