Casa Velha Resort, born in 2007 in Praia Estoril, just 200 meters from the beach and 500 meters from the square of Sal Rei. The building, constructed in the Portuguese colonial style, consists of various types of apartments, with one or two rooms, which overlook the characteristic quintal. Each apartment is equipped with kitchen and private veranda. Above, the beautiful terrace overlooking the sea; the lovely bar on the ground floor for the abundant breakfast buffet with fresh local produce and traditional dishes made by our staff and for drinks with a romantic candlelight with live Cape Verdean music. Casa Velha Resort, ideal for families, authentics traveler and sports lovers (thanks the proximity to the most important club of kite surfing and windsurfing). The reception organized on request, yours days with excursions, and guided tours on quad bikes, cars and catamaran; group dinners and cultural events

Upon arriving, the lady at the reception was helpful by recommending where the main attractions were. The location was perhaps the most disappointing, as the surrounding building site was desolate and without a view of the beach from the communal terrace. At night there is very limited lighting to the apartment and the majority of employees speak only French or Portuguese, which was difficult for me. And the laundry is rediculous!!!!!!!!!

Building beautiful from the outside and from the inside, with the charm of colonial architecture, very tasteful decoration. Location is great: close to the beach with its nice beach cafés and close to the center with its restaurants. Next door: an excellent Italian bakery (the best croissants I have ever had! I recommend to have breakfast there - I don't like breakfast in hotels). Will return there when I come back to Boa Vista (soon, I hope!). Btw., I prefer Boa Vista to Sal. Less touristy, and (perhaps as a consequence) the locals are much nicer. And, in contrast with Sal, the big hotels are far away. And yes, this is a hotel for the individual traveler (i.e., this is not where the big travel agencies (TUI, ...) unload their groups.

The apartments are incredibly spacious and decorated in a very simplistic chic style that was lovely but in need of a little sprucing up. Peaceful location only a short walk to the beach and 10 minute walk out of town across a large piece of wasteland, not ideally suited to single travelers though as quite isolated and dark if going out at night. The night watchman were friendly but the other staff even given the language barrier could definitely have been more personable and cracked a smile occasionally. I would not recommend the breakfast which was the limited.. same thing everyday and really lacking imagination. Beware of the hotel tax which was charged when we were leaving and had not accounted for in our currency. I enjoyed my stay at Casa Vehla apartment and hope this review helps others to also.

I stayed in Casa Velha for a week and I have loved it. The place is located very close to the beach of Estoril and its at the beginning to Sal Rei. You can walk to Sal Rei within minutes and at night time its very quiet and relaxing. My apartment had a very strong smell of mould but it wasn't a major problem asI spent a lot of time out etc. Also, the fridge was a bit too noisy at night time. A part from these 2 issues that place is perfect.

This is a great place to stay - apartments rather than hotel - though you can get breakfast. Most of the apartments (but not all) have really nice verandas and are spacious and comfortable. It is built in a similar style to a Moroccan Riad with an open central courtyard the rooms open onto. There's a roof terrace too. It is in a good location, close to a good beach and the town. Biggest problem is poor wifi - it sort of works but you have to to stand in a corner to get any signal at all and it really shouldn't be too difficult to at least have it work in the sitting areas (if not the apartments. Other than that - very good

Recently returned from a magical two weeks in this wonderful place. Having previously visited Cape Verde and staying at one of the RIU all inclusive monoliths, this was a polar opposite experience and in our opinion much better. Cape Verde could develop fast as a tourist destination as holidaymakers seeking winter sun (there's plenty of it there) look for alternatives to the Middle East. It's hard to describe the area and not poison it with unjustified the criticism. The 'resort' is an attractive property sitting in the midst of a fairly barren landscape, other half built and in some cases never to be finished apartment blocks, stray dogs and unmade up roads. If I'd known all that before we booked Im not sure we would have, but we're so glad we did, the contrast between that and the real positives far made up for any shortcomings, we felt we were immersed in a 'real' environment, which contributed to the experience and was completely safe, even the stray dogs were the best behaved canines we'd ever encountered! Sal Rei is a small, bustling town with two faces and only 10 minutes drive from the airport (we were sipping G&T's on the terrace within 20 minutes of leaving the aiport). The tourist side comprises in the most part elegant beachfront apartments whilst the locals seem to live up towards the harbour in more limited circumstances. Sal Rei is poor, dirt poor however the people are amazing, appearing a little surly at first but all happy to talk once engaged, unfortunately their grasp of English although limited was much better than our attempts at Portuguese! Given the obvious poverty the locals could be forgiven for being pushy or canny around tourists, but this was not the case, in fact in visiting Sal Rei we felt that tourists simply folded into the fabric of the real village life, rather than dictating it, if Cape Verde develops significantly as a tourist destination this is likely to change and visitors may start to encounter cynical locals. One notable example of the fabulous people was on a trip out to buy pizza we discovered we'd not brought enough money with us to buy wine, the restaurant owner (who we'd never met) didn't bat an eye lid and gave us a bottle of wine asking us to return with the money the next day..imagine that in any other holiday destination! The joy for me was it remains a wonderful, cultural melting pot-Cape Verdians, Italians, Portuguese, Africans, Dutch, Germans, Spaniards and English all seemed to rub along together integrating three dimensionally without any apparent drama. Casa Velha-this is a large, shutter clad property, colonial in style and comprising maybe half a dozen self contained apartments. We were staying in the top floor penthouse, a fabulous one bedroomed property with extensive outside balconies and terraces. The apartment was furnished in the IKEA style, had an open plan kitchen/living area and on this floor was also the small bathroom. Upstairs was the single bedroom which had french windows and glorious beach/sea views from the bed which was our 6am vantage point as the sun rose. The owners claim the property would sleep 4 but that would rely on 2 sleeping on the sofas in the living area which might not be ideal. The kitchen was well appointed-fridge with small freezer, kettle, toaster, gas hob and oven. The cupboards were perhaps short of cooking essentials such as a colander, bread knife and large lidded saucepan, otherwise it was clean and well appointed. The bathroom was beginning to show it's age but I believe this is soon to be remodelled which will be a big improvement. It also housed the only loo in the property which was a chore if you needed to pay a visit from the upstairs bedroom during the night. The bedroom was a good size with wardrobes and table lamps. The views were simply amazing, to lay on your bed and have an uninterrupted view of a giant sun setting is a joy to behold. The terraces were also outstanding, 4 large sofas, a couple of loungers and a small dining table and chairs, it was perfectly possible to live outside! Accessing the apartment could be challenging if you have young children or mobility problems-it's a climb of 60 odd steps up fairly steep flights of stairs. The beach was a five minute walk away, the town similar. There's a small minimart for groceries and household essentials. We were a little surprised that food shopping and eating in restaurants was similarly prices to the UK, how the locals get on I don't know. The local beach bars are good, Alisios particularly so, we ate out a few times and the food was ok but not the abundance of fresh fish we were expecting. We will certainly return to this African odyssey and this property in particular. Finally mustn't forget the marvellous folks at The Utility Room, Matt & Sam who manage the penthouse on behalf of the owners. Very helpful and totally reliable, they even have the foresight to present guests with a mobile phone pre-charged and connected to a local network in case you need to get hold of them or call a cab which comes with their recommendation...brilliant!

Considering the price we paid (100 euros a night) we were very disappointed to be in a room which had no outside windows (bottom floor on the back of the property). The room was very hot and no possibility to open windows to get some ventilation. There was no ventilation fan or airco either, so we didn't sleep much. The bed was also extremely squeaky, which made us decide to sleep on the couch. We originally planned to stay two nights, but left after the first night.

Beautiful building, this a retro hotel very near the beach, with lovely and helpful staff (they made us a take-away lunch because we didn't have time to go shopping before our boat trip and they found someone to take us snorkelling). The rooms are basic but have everything you need.

Casa Velha is a lovely place for you to relax we had a bad start as the penthouse apartment was double booked so we had to stay in a small room for 2 nights then move to a larger room for the rest of our holidays (9 nights) we didn't let is spoil our holidays !!!!. Michela and her team were very good and helpful, breakfast was nice with ham and cheese and fresh bread and the homemade cakes were delicious. Michela put a social evening on with some local lads playing music and we had a local dish for supper Cauhupa lovely evening. The Apartments and public areas were very very clean Location toe beach and bars and restaurant all in walking distance. Lovley holiday thankyou Helen and Steve Vaughan
