If you get to stay at Freestone, consider yourself lucky. Jimmy is an amazing and sweet host, and built all of the cabins by hand. I stayed in one cabin with a friend our first night in New Zealand on our way to Milford Sound and it was exactly what we needed: we woke refreshed and relaxed with birdsong exploding... More

Mum and teenage sons spent several days based here as we explored this part of the country from Milford and Doubtful Sounds down to Lake Hauroko. Heron Lodge provided comfortable beds for all with a stunning view over Lake Manapouri. All the kitchen stuff we needed was there, the bathroom block always clean with hot showers and Jimmy a convivial... More

We stayed one night in a double cabin (fantail) in September on our way to Doubtful Sound. Was nice and warm with the pot belly stove. Great bed with nice linens and a spectacular view in the morning of the mountains across lake Manapouri. Kitchenette had all the needed pots and pans to cook with. Bathrooms were spotless. Definitely recommend... More

When I arrived I was offered either one of the normal hostel rooms or to stay in the spare room in his house. At first I said the hostel rooms as they look like amazing little cabins with seats outside and a fire pit with wood. However I then saw inside Jimmy's AMAZING house he built himself and instantly changed... More

We stayed for two days. The cabins are clean, basic and rustic but that is their charm. Located in a hill side with views across the valley to the mountains beyond. The cabins have wood burning stoves and there is an ample supply of logs so you can stay warm on cooler evenings. Relax on the deck in the evenings... More

It was clean, and the beds were pretty comfortable. We stayed two nights in different rooms with our Milford trek in between.(so really any bed was going to feel great) I think the big problem here is that the family is split up or splitting up and no one is putting much care into the business at the moment. It... More

I spent 2 weeks in Freestone in winter 2013 and i had an amazing time. Our cabin was great, very cosy and clean and from the front porch you could see the lake and fjords in the distance. Kerstin and Jimmy are lovely hosts. Definately recommend to everyone who loves the nature and would like to experience something different!

We booked one of the en-suite cabins, and it was superb in terms of providing the basics. The location was good - well away from the tourism hot-spots, although a car was vital. The owners were wonderful - friendly and helpful. Great value for money (but certainly not a luxury spot if that is what you want).

We stayed a few nights in one of the cabins. Originally we thought we had a room in the main communal building but since we were the only ones there Jimmy the owner "upgraded" us in a cabin with ensuite. That was ok but it would have been nice to have been given an option first, considering we were charged... More
