Kawag Nature Lodge (KNL) is the perfect jungle escapade for travellers seeking to unwind in nature’s warm and loving embrace in Sabah. Located in Kawag Forest, a Class 1 Protection Forest Reserve area, it is only 80 minutes drive away from Lahad Datu town. The lodge is surrounded by lush forest, Bornean wildlife, network of streams and rivers and literally sits on the oldest geological formation of crystalline basement, approximately 200 million years old. Our activities will get you closer to this amazing natural environment. We have river tubing, picnic by the the waterfall, fish spa, jungle trekking and night drive to spot nocturnal wildlife. KNL is equipped with basic hotel facilities and amenities to ensure your stay is comfortable in the wilderness. The lodge restaurant serves local delicacies, has a 24-hour electricity, clean and cosy rooms with air-conditioner and fan, and hot water for showers.
We were three days in Kawag last July. It is a very beautiful place with good accomodation in a beautiful garden with a lot of animals around. Rooms are ok, everything you need is present. The staff is super friendly and attentive. The food is very good and with great variety. The guides are very experienced and show you the tracks through the rainforest where you can spot several wild animals (and leeches :-)).

Its basically living in the forest and getting a 5star meal with a great service. The staff are really nice, the guides will take you to a nice walk in the forest. Be advised going for a walk in the forest there is filled with leech! Make sure to wear clothes that cover your skin. Also when the driver picks you up to drive you to the rainforest lodge ask him to drive to a supermarket first because there wont be any snack etc at the lodge. We bought extra water and snacks with us for the stay. Overall its a beautiful experience highly recommend

The built infrastructure of Kawag is impressive, sadly it ends there. Although clean enough, the rooms are stark with a single bare light bulb and bulk buy discount furniture without a hint of local flavour. Food is very ordinary, breakfast one morning consisted of barely warm packet noodles and long life sausages, all served with sickly sweet cordial. Luckily, there was always fresh fruit offered. The staff are lovely and doing their best but don't really know what is expected of them. Our guide was excellent. However, none of this would have mattered if there had been wildlife! The forest was logged heavily up until only 10 years ago and secondary growth is returning, as our guide told us, the animals are beginning to return but this takes time. We heard many birds and…

I booked a 3 day 2 night stay here with a friend. The lodge is very beautiful and despite not having air conditioning, it is surprisingly cool. There are beautiful views of the valley from the restaurant and the food is buffet style but plentiful in choice, including western and Asian cuisine. The deluxe room was large and a spare bed was provided on request. The bathroom was very clean and the cool tub was also very large. There was a very nice veranda to relax on and watch birds in the field and the occasional water tuber float past or hang washing. The staff speak excellent English and our tour guide Denny was the highlight of the trip. He was absolutely bubbling over with enthusiasm and knowledge about the area, wildlife and fauna! Quite handy given we had very keen…

I was five days in Kawag with my wife last March. The place was very beautiful and comfortable. Is a good place for relaxes before and after the trek. The accommodations are in a beautiful garden inside of the secondary forest. There are a lot of animals around. The rooms are clean and have everything you need, even hot water, but we missed more chairs in the terrace because only was one. All the staff were very friendly and attentive with us. The food was really amazing. Every day different and very elaborated. The chef is really good We will never forget Wang, our guide. He is the most experienced guide, we knew in Kawag. He have a lot of experience and know perfectly the forest. Thanks him we saw elephants every day, orangutans, flying squirrel and many kinds of…

We wanted to spend a few days at the Danum Valley Field Centre but they were closed for winter holidays (around New Year) and so were redirected to this lodge with an intermediate offering between the top notch Rainforest Lodge and the basic DVFC. It was built by the forestry management and it opened in August 2016. It is located in the buffer zone of the Danum Valley (it is not a primary forest), where selective tree cutting was applied in the '70s, next to the Kawag river. It has 20 rooms. The rooms with AC face the forest, while the rooms with fan only face the camp. The rooms are nice, but the bathrooms look old already and their design allows for poor water elimination. All rooms have a private balcony, but there is only one plain wooden chair per room. We asked for a…
