My wife and I visited the hotel twice -- in March and then in August, both times for a weekend getaway. It's about 2 hours from Glasgow, but very much worth the trip. Very calm and relaxing atmosphere, good hikes around Port Bannatyne, weather permitting of course. If there's one reason to stay at Port Royal -- it's the food...

My husband, two grown sons and I visited the Isle of Bute on Saturday, May 20th. I had read about Port Ballantyne and the Port Royal Hotel and wanted very much to see it and eat at the Russian Tavern. After arriving by ferry in Rothesay, we easily found the correct bus (the owner of the hotel e-mailed directions), and...

“This is a small ancient inn, not a luxury hotel, but it's great fun. The rooms have TV, shower/toilet, coffee making gear and it's £32pppn including the Russian breakfast!”
