BATU BATU is a rustic private resort set amongst coconut groves, rocky outcrops and fine sand beaches on the tropical, uninhabited island of Pulau Tengah, Malaysia in the South China Sea. This simple resort is built from a variety of hard woods in the style of a Malay “kampung” or village. BATU BATU welcomes families with children. Whilst on Pulau Tengah, adults and children alike can enjoy the island’s eight white sandy beaches, snorkel or dive amongst its colourful coral reefs and kayak or walk around its 3km perimeter. The open-sided pavilion restaurant and bar has 270-degree views across the sea and serves delicious European and Asian dishes. Guests can choose to relax with a cold drink at the Beach Bar, soak in the sea, play on the large white sand beaches or embark on an adventure through the island’s dense forest.

Batu Batu hotel garners high praise for its spotless environment, with guests frequently lauding the pristine beaches and immaculately kept rooms. While the hotel's serene atmosphere, marrying rustic charm with luxury, and its spacious rooms offering stunning views, are well-received, some visitors feel the value doesn't quite match the cost. Enthusiastic reviews often mention the warm and attentive service, although there are occasional comments about the need for improved room maintenance.

We were at Batu Batu from 22-26 August 2020 and we had a wonderful break from work and KL! The resort was very well maintained and very eco friendly. The waters were crystal clear and despite running at nearly full occupancy we had ample space and privacy at the many beaches on the island.
Dining was part of the board package and we throughly enjoyed what was served as part of the package. Quality and presentation was very good with sufficent choices for all of us.
The Restaurant n Bar was located at the best spot on the island and great ambience for meals and just lazing about.
The best part of the resort is the fantastic hospitality and warmth of the staff!! All of them were amazing helpful friendly and very approachable and they all seemed to be having a great time working there!!!
A special shout out to Sam, Rara, Akma at the restaurant, Gul, Nabil Zam at the Sunset Bar and TIC! All the others were as wonderful and warm. We had a wonderful time with the evening volleyball sessions!
The GM,Camille was around all the time and he deserves credit for keeping the guests and staff happy and ensuring that the resort remains the best and top local holiday destination!
We will be back!!!!!

We stayed just before the MCO and came back on July 1st with our young kids for a 5 day stay. BatuBatu is definitely our favourite place in Malaysia. We like that the set up of the resort is small, so with young kids everything is close by. A few meters to the restaurant, pool and beach with no stairs (we stayed in the beach Villa). When you walk past Long Beach there are the most amazing, quiet beaches where our 4 year old enjoyed snorkelling all day long.
With so few people on the island, a huge effort of the resort focussing on social distancing, staff wearing mask, cleaning the tables etc. it really felt we were in the safest place of whole of Malaysia pandemic wise.
Staff is really great and made our boys' vacation great, especially after 3 months in lock down and not seeing people, the friendly and open staff was all our boys needed to feel happy again. Special thanks to amazing Sam and Joji!!

Recently stayed here 5 nights with our friends and family...we had an incredible time.

Beaches are beautiful and pristine...you can while a day snorkeling, sunning on the bean bags, hiking, paddle boarding, scuba diving, or just enjoying a beer at the beach bar. Our kids (8 and 10 yrs) had a great time, and even ate the food, which can be hit and miss at most Malaysian resorts. The adults in our group enjoyed the food too, no complaints here...it was quite varied (vegetarian and non vegetarian options) and the staff were very attentive at the restaurant and all areas of the resort. The perfect place to get away from the city for a few days. Our only regret is not finding this place sooner! We would definitely go back.

Considering we paid RM 300 per person for the meals per day, we were expecting more, but the food that were served were rather disappointing apart from 2-3 dishes that weren’t bad. When we decided to go to your resort , an island , we looked forward to having fresh seafood served but much to our dismay, throughout the 3 nights of our stay , each of us only tasted 4 pieces of fried squid !!!!

The sleeping quarters are ok but am just flabbergasted each time we took our shower or use the restroom, we have to made do with water which is tainted with salt. Or is it salt water ?

Service at the restaurant is acceptable but there is definitely room for improvement. There were occurrences when we ordered something specific but were served with exactly what we did not ask for.

The island is beautiful, so quiet and relaxed! Staf is wonderful, food is great and we love the small scale of the island. It never feels crowded, you can have the beach all to yourself. We visited during Christmas and even though it was monsoon time, we had great weather and during snorkeling we saw a small shark, a turtle, sting rays and other beautiful fish and coral. The sunset bar is a great place to have a drink in the afternoon, and we had the entire beach to ourselves a few times.

We especially love the conservation work. Our kids enjoyed the beach clean ups and a lot of effort is made not only to clean the beach of the island, but also of other islands. Shark talk and turtle talk were very interesting, it gives hope to see that the important message is given that the animals need protection and are very threatened. Great job!

Go visit and you will not regret it.

The jungle room is nestled in the heart of the Tengah Island rainforest. The stairs are steep so not good for differently-abled so take care when reserving a room. The rooms are huge and so is the bathroom. A turn down service comes in the early evening to put the mosquito net down and rolled the blinds. The room sometimes felt a bit damp, even with the aircon on, but I think that may be being in the jungle. Would be good to have some dehumidifiers in the jungle rooms.

The food is wonderful and always prepared with the very best ingredients. It comes at a small fortune to eat their meal plan which is MYR300 per person per day. The quality is good. The service in the restaurant is phenomenal and there is nothing that they won't do for their customers.
The beach is pristine and the water as clear as crystal.
When we went snorkelling in the junior reef there were little moon jellyfish that gave little shocks, more irritating than anything and there are sandflies on this beach. Long beach is better for swimming as well as sunrise beach. NO sandflies on longbeach. You can meander on the whole island and walk around during low tide. The tiki bar is nice enough but lacks the pizzazz of normal tiki bars. The coconuts come warm, not chilled which left me wanting. The bean bags on the beach are a nice touch as well as the lounging chairs. Would be good to have umbrellas over the bean bags on the beach s you cant actually enjoy them during the day. The tiki bar should be open when people are actually on the beach during the day. It will encourage other customers to go there and therefore they will spend more on beverages if they had access to them during the day. Camille and his team were very impressive and they should be proud of the service they provide.
One thing I will say is that they should have a peek at what Japamala offers their guests as complimentary add ons(1 hour complimentary cocktails from 6pm-7pm, laundry service, turn down service with cognac, free use of the kayaks/SUP boards, afternoon tea) . I think this will make Batu Batu even more attractive.
It was a very lovely stay and I am very glad I chose this resort for my last holiday in MALAYSIA.

We chose to stay at Batu Batu over other resorts in Malaysia because of its work on conservation and focus on sustainable tourism. At Batu Batu, EVERYTHING was beautiful and amazing. There were many beaches to explore and were never crowded, the waters were so clear you will be able to spot fishes by just looking over the jetty. The resort was very clean and the service was top notch. Even though we were told the resort was at full capacity when we were there, it never felt crowded. The resort is full board and we thought the meals were delicious. If you see any sort of mousse on the menu, I would personally recommend choosing that for your dessert. Our water heater wasn’t working when we returned one evening and the manager immediately sent technicians in to fix it.

Never have we felt so much a part of the resort where we were able to greet the staff every morning as friends. Everyone was part of the island and everyone always had a smile for us and offered help whenever it was needed. We enjoyed the friendly banter and jokes. Special thanks to Roberto, Joji, Sam, Nabil and Zam for their care and attention, especially towards our kids.

We would love to come back to Batu Batu, not just for the gorgeous island and resort but also for the amazing staff who made this whole experience so special. I might even make peace with the local fruit bats.

Batu Batu resort and the TIC (Tengah Island conservation) for the 2 of us ticked all the boxes in terms of what we look for an island beach holiday. The sustainability practices of the resort, The location (only 20 minutes from Mersing), White sandy beaches and crystal clear water, Easy to moderate trekking around the island, Many quiet and secluded excellent coves and beaches, Good swimming and snorkelling off the beaches. The island size was the right size for us - not too big or too small.
The TIC provided interesting information and talks and we were lucky enough to be there when turtle hatchlings were released into the sea. The staff at the TIC are very well informed and knowledgeable.
The Resort provided excellent and very sizeable local hut type accommodation and have a good outlook. It appealed to us as it was also low density. Only 22 rooms in total. The food was excellent with a mixture of western and local dishes and vegetarians are catered for. The service staff in all areas were brilliant.
This was certainly one of the best beach island holidays we have had in the last 30 years of travelling.

From the moment we stepped onto the jetty, we were ohhing & ahhing with the beauty of the island.
Kudos and much appreciation to land guest officer ( Azwat) , boatmen, Island guest officers ( Azzim, Shuen, Malay lady), Manager Bernard, FnB crew ( Sam, Joji, Hannys, Raj bartender, all those who were working in resto from 13th to 16th june), Masseur and Activities crew ( The manager who allowed Afifi to accompany me on my round island swim)! All of them showed the best hospitality & service to resort guests. Batu-batu resort tops a lot of other resorts, we’ve been to overseas and yet there’s this hidden gem right here in Malaysia.
Full board plan is about Myr300 per pax per day and they really do feed us well! We’ve gained 2kg in 4 days 🤣 Luckily for the round island hike (about 2.6km) & some snorkelling activities , we managed to burn some calories. While hiking, guests may request a bag to help collect marine debris or rubbish along the hike which runs through the beaches & jungle trail. The most rubbish collected were mineral water bottles ( good for recycling as its made from PET) followed by juice & milk tetrapak boxes. These are washed ashore daily , whereby the Batu2 team collects it as well during their walks round island.
Our room s13 was ocean view villa with plenty of privacy & fantastic morning view. The sunsets on the jetty were majestic. Rooms are equipped with fans, air cond & water heater. Guests are encouraged to refill their water bottles at resto to minimize usage of plastic. However, fret not, there’s always 4 glass bottles of water in room. Request for guest service by whatsapp when refills are required. This is afterall a conservation island getaway among nature but done glamorously 😁.
Also, do support Tengah Island conservation ( TIC) as they’re doing great work. The night before we left, turtle came up to nest which is a good sign. Last but not least thank you to the resort owners for sharing with us the beauty of. Batu-Batu island and conserving Batu-Batu island.

We were there during the MCO and low season and the resort was so blissful. We had the 2 bedroom poolside villa and the beds were comfortable and the verandah very spacious. The beaches' white sand was so soft and the sea water was crystal clear. One can just snorkel off anywhere and do look out for the sea turtles swimming by the jetty at night. The 3 meal plan was more than enough even for big eaters and the food was well presented and super delicious (kudos to MasterChefs Karul and Balan). The best was the staffs' service and friendliness. Thank you OM Benard, ever smiling Sam and his wonderful restaurant brood, the reception, the maintenance for the DVD, the gardener and the cleaners (too many names here) for being the icing on the cake. Well done folks, keep it up.

Hi LW, Thank you for your interest to stay with us. Our meal plan cycle is based on the number of nights you stay with us so e.g. you were to stay 3D2N, we will only charge 2 cycles of RM 290 /adult (RM 580 in total) and RM 145 /child (RM 290 in total). Returned scheduled boat transfers cost RM 140 /adult and RM 95 /child. If our boat schedules do not comply to your traveling plans, then you do have the option to hire a private charter but this is subjected to boat availability and tide levels at the river mouth at the hour requested. There are certain hours in the day where tides are too low for boats to sail and out from the river mouth. If you have any other queries, please do not hesitate to contact us directly via email or phone and we will be happy to help.
