I spent 10 nights at Awera Resort with friends and had a fantastic time. The rooms are spacious, well designed and nicely spread out across the huge property. The food is simply amazing! In contrast to most resorts which do set menus, at Awera has an a la carte menu for lunch and dinner (that changes every week), hence, order any dish you like. Once a week there is a fantastic BBQ night, too! Add barista-style coffees, lots of breakfast options, great cocktails, etc etc. The surf is great, more lefts than rights, however, one of the rights is breaking as you enjoy your morning coffee. Telecopes, one of the better waves in the world, is about 15 mins away by boat which they run twice a day. About 10 more waves can be accessed. The owners and staff are all very dedicated and lovely. And if you have to Work, the wifi is good and for very best results, get a Telkomsel sim card as you'll have flawless 4G connection without having to share bandwidth. Simply 5 out of 5*…
The most luxurious resort in the Mentawais and especially perfect for couples seeking a romantic getaway as well as epic surf, Awera Resort is located right on the beach, with the restaurant and pool sitting at the beachfront of the property. We stayed here in September 2021 and had a wonderful time. Communication was the best we experienced of any place in the Mentawais (we contacted all the main resorts to compare inclusions and prices...this was by far the best and upon meeting others who have been around the Mentawais, they confirmed it is the nicest place with the best food). The staff onsite are also super friendly, helpful, yet respect your privacy. You can tell this place is owned by westerners with a vision for comfort, luxury and enjoyment. The food is delicious, with many vegetarian and vegan options too. There are fresh seafood options on the menu and a chicken snack. Meat (beef, lamb, pork and chicken breast) is generally not served on the menu here. The all-inclusive package includes all-you-can-eat a la carte. Espresso coffees, smoothie bowls and teas are included in the morning slot between 6-9am, but additional charge after. Drinks included during the day include soft drink/soda pop, water, coconuts, black tea and Indonesian plunger coffee. Overall, we were impressed with the food quality and taste! From the moment we arrived we were greeted by the management team, shown around and the owners (Spanish) also came to greet us. We had a birthday during our stay and the chef made an amazing birthday cake which everyone shared. The staff all came together to sing and made it super special! The rooms are lovely. Some are at the back of the property, away from the beach, and 2 are right on the beach. Ours was at the front, on the beach, with a queen size bed and a single bed. The mattress and pillows were comfortable. Rooms are spacious, ensuite has 2 shower heads and double vanity which is nice! There is air conditioning which is pretty effective. Due to the Indonesian-style structure and build of the rooms, with gaps between the doors, etc, the cool air does escape and the room gets warmer during the day when it is sunny. The wifi here worked well and we were able to work in between surfs easily! There is no wifi connection in the rooms, only in the main restaurant/ lounge area (if you require connection in your room, be sure to have a Telkomsel sim card in your phone for 4G). There is a yoga shala at the back of the property that would comfortably fit 8-10 people. To get to Awera Resort: - Fly to Padang (PDG) - Book overnight stay at Grand Zuri Hotel in Padang (this is the nicest place to stay in Padang - much nicer than the Mercure. We found cheap rooms on Agoda.com) - The Mentawai Fast Boat leaves early morning. Depart Hotel at 5.40am to go to the fast boat (it's literally 5 mins away, less than 20k for a Go Car!) - Buy a ticket at the dock to go to Tua Pejat (only 295k per person, 1 way) - Fast boat departs around 7am. You must arrive early to get a ticket as it is busy and does fill up!! **if you don't want to hassle with booking the fast boat tickets, etc, there is a Comfort Package available through the resort and they will do it all for you. You pay a significant amount for the convenience though and we found it easy and straightforward to arrange ourselves. Recommendations: - Get a Telkomsel sim card for your phone if you need 4G! XL and other companies do not have connection in the Mentawais, only Telkomsel. - Bring 1 pair of flip-flops only! Noone wears shoes around the property at all and there are no hiking spots, so don't waste space packing shoes. There are water buckets at the entrance of every space/room to wash off sand before entry. - BYO eye mask. There are light white curtains covering the windows, and garden lights on all night outside, so if you are sensitive to light, bring an eye mask. - BYO earplugs. The venue is right on the beach so you have all the beautiful sounds of the ocean, however jf you're sensitive to noise you might appreciate the earplugs. - BYO mosquito coils to burn in the room in the evening. We found this helped keep them away! There are a lot of mosquitoes in the Mentawais!! - BYO first aid kit including plasters, petroleum jelly, antiseptic, etc. - BYO power board; there are only 2 power points on one side of the bed and the bedside lamp takes one of them so if you have phones, etc that you want to charge and keep bedside, you'll need a power board. - BYO mask, fins and snorkel as they are an additional charge and not included. - BYO yoga mat if you plan to practice. There are some provided but they are a bit old and worn.…
Our family are avid global travelers - we seek unique places that cater for an avid sports lover (me) but can also satisfy the needs of two young daughters and the comforts demanded by a spouse. We also avoid mass destinations. Knowing Indonesia, this was a heavy ask and based on reviews, we had very high and probably unrealistic expectations for Awera. In every possible way however, Aimar (owner) and his incredible staff and resort, exceeded these! The attention to detail of the resort, from first meeting us at the fast ferry drop off point, the accommodation, the food, the service, the surf guides, the surf photographer, the activities like snorkeling and the mangrove, assistance with travel logistics under Covid - nothing was too much effort! I can honestly say that we could not find fault and we are a demanding bunch! Surf destinations struggle to find a family balance, having been to many, I can only think of two that get this right. Kandooma in the Maldives and Awera in the Mentawai - the big difference is Awera is much better at it - it’s bespoke, it’s small, it’s gorgeous and it’s 40% cheaper! If you love surfing and want your family to revel in a holiday while you curve waves, there is no better place to travel to. I agree with the high rating Awera has achieved - it’s real!…
After almost 18 months in ‘lockdown’ I decided to spend a mini holiday with my wife at Awera Resort. We love how the bungalows are traditionally design and the facilities are very well maintained by the resort’s team. Personnel on the resort are very friendly, helpful, and informative, making you feel like home away from home. Unfortunately on the last day of my stay, we didn’t get to finish the stay on a better note. The ferry back to Padang was scheduled at 15:00 and it only takes 10 minutes from the resort to the ferry harbour. As I was going through the check-out procedure, I asked what time will the boat take us to the harbour and I was informed ‘12 noon’ Lunch is served on the resort from 12:00 to 14:00. It was a major religious holiday then and I wasn’t sure if anyone will be offering lunch around the harbour but owner insist that ‘check out is always around 12 noon, please wait and we will inform you when the boat is ready to take you to the harbour’ The boat is finally ready for the harbour around 12:30 where we board and head to the harbour without lunch and not knowing if there are anyone selling food there because of the public holiday. There is also the time when the owner seems to be unhappy with his employee and kicked the foam seats of the sofa out of anger. I admit that the resort is beautiful and I had some of my best sleep on it but I cannot recommend the resort because of afore mentioned reasons.…
Fantastic place in the Mentawai - here for a wedding anniversary ( a big one) but also for the surf and the lifestyle of the resort. Surf not to crash hot but it is only the start of the season but hubby is still having fun with some great photos by the resident surf photo guy Gus. Apart from that Awera Resort is great - fantastic food, lovely villas , friendly helpful people , yoga is great - twice a day so great for the non surfer .& surfer alike The surrounds are magnificent with crystal clear water - great to snorkel of the surf boat when the other half is surfing . Points to consider - the mentawai is remote so you need to be able to get in and out of boats and these types of resorts have a sense of community with fellow travelers The bonus - the recently opened spa with massages etc With the Coronavirus sweeping the world this place is nice and safe from the current hysteria and if you are reading this post 2020 google the toilet paper crisis of 2020 Highly recommend Awera.…
We stayed at Awera resort for approx 10 days, and were beyond happy with everything. Professionally run with the friendliest atmosphere, can’t recommend highly enough in every aspect! Aimar and his team made us feel like family. Perfect location for surfers, beach goers, snorkellers, relaxers, honeymooners or just wanting a tropical holiday. Villa was incredible, bathrooms particarly amazing, wide open spaces and really comfortable beds. It’s a lush jungle paradise that makes you feel right at home because of the friendly staff, and open layout. The waves located nearby are world- class, if you aren’t into surfing, the snorkelling is incredible and close by is great spots for freediving also. The ultimate place to relax. The mangroves blew our mind with crystal clear waters, and a peaceful paddle in a stand up paddle board. Pretty hard to find places this picturesque, so friendly, located in the heart of the Mentawai and only 7 minutes from where the ferry gets in. Also, AMAZING fruit, surprised they didn’t run out of mangos with us around, we are vegan and they catered above and beyond for this. Surf guides, and all staff were beyond great, we made some great friends here and can’t wait to go back. Thankyou! Brinkley and Lach X…
From the moment we stepped off the boat till we left we were looked after 24/7 by Amer and his team of extremely efficient staff. Big group of 14 SA. Had unbelievable 10 days on this beautiful unspoiled island. Very lucky with surf it was exceptional. Rooms are beautiful and luxurious for the area. Was great for wives and family as non surfer we still had plenty to do with snorkeling, yoga, standup paddle boarding and of course swimming and lazing around that magnificent pool with the most incredible view. They really look after the surfers who could have smoothies and food all day long from the kitchen all included. Fantastic and very memorable holiday.
An absolute gem of a place. Aimer and his superb team are always on hand to make your stay memorable. They went out of their way to help us celebrate 3 very special birthdays whilst on the island. Great for all levels of surfing and enough to do for the non surfers. Accommodation and food were of high standards and plentiful. I cannot recommend this resort enough!!
I have already been twice to Awera and I will definitely go back again! The location is like paradise, the bungalows are beautiful, very clean and comfortable, the food is delicious, all employees are extremely friendly and the daily surftrips are just excellent. There are several waves around the island, so there is always one wich is just perfect. The water is so clear you can watch the fishes while waiting for the next wave. The trip to get there is long but it's absolutely worth it!!!
My girlfriend and I spent almost two weeks at Awera Resort and we enjoyed every single hour of our stay! The Awera Resort is the perfect place for surfers and also for non-surfers, since there’s not just surfing and magical waves around the island but also two yoga sessions every day and several other activities you can book! Another big plus for us was, that my non-surfer girlfriend could take surf lessons with well-educated surf instructors and the necessary boards available from the resort. When we arrived we were immediately enchanted by the beautiful grounds of Awera. The bungalows are loosely arranged around the pool, the dining area and between the beach and the impeccable garden. Since there are only eight bungalows and a maximum of 24 guests everything always feels very familiar. Everything was on a very high level of quality! The food was delicious, the bungalows were cleaned every day; wherever you looked, it was just perfect! You could order fresh fruit, snacks (salty or sweet) and fresh juices all day long (all included in the price). And there’s even the option to have vegan food during your whole stay, if you like to! But what was even more impressive than the high level resort and the spectacular and breathtakingly beautiful nature, were the people that work there. Every single one of them was super helpful, friendly and competent. We already look forward to our next stay with Aimar, Kepa and the whole crew at Awera Resort!…
