Detailed Reviews

This review is going to be mainly about the restaurant at Toyugi. The lodging part is based on my family member's experience, which was very positive. I only participated in the dinner part at the restaurant, and will focus more on the local dishes that are not on the menu for those interested, since the menu on their website is in Chinese only, and there is very little information even in Chinese on the dishes not on the menu.

I stayed at Toyugi a couple of years ago at the hot spring cottage, and was quite satisfied. There is also outdoor hotspring/pool, camp grounds, plus bike rental to tour the premise (a very large piece of land owned by the local farmer's association) but didn't get to really enjoy the facilities much due to late arrival and early departure. But did enjoy (based on a local friend's recommendation) some fabulous local dishes at the restaurant. That was when I learned there are dishes that must be ordered in advance.

So this August I recommended this place to my brother's family because they were traveling with two young kids and may enjoy the variety of activities and the open space there. They took the train to Zhiben and were picked up by the hotel shuttle (reserved in advance). They also stayed in the hot spring cottage but used the public hot spring and pool a lot and really enjoyed it. The kids took a dip in the hot spring tub in the room before bed time, and according to the parents, "slept extremely well" that night. Overall a very positive experience.

I met up with them for dinner because I didn't want to miss the food. Toyugi is run by the farmer's association, the restaurant gets its food fresh from the local farmers, and the chef/cooks are local farm women who know the ingredients and how to prepare them well, farm style. Don't expect anything fancy in terms of plating, ambiance, service (they are friendly and helpful, but not restaurant quality efficiency) etc., but if you like freshly prepared food, this is the place to try.

The following are dishes that must be ordered in advance (but highly recommended):

Pork rib with roselle sauce (must order in advance, since they do not use frozen pork and order the pork the very morning on the day it is to be served. Roselle flower is a local specialty. When I had this dish it was with candied roselle flowers, but there was a rather poor roselle flower harvest this year, so... )

And in case you are interested, try the roselle drink as well, served in a pitcher, tart and sweet with a naturally brilliant red color. I think the first pitcher is complimentary. The adults liked it but it was not a big hit with the kids.

Tender fiddlehead (must order in advance. It's a "wild" vegetable and therefore is not always available. We had it as a salad. On my previous visit I had it in a roll with seaweed on the previous visit, so I was a little disappointed they no longer serve it that way, but the fiddleheads were tender and fresh, still quite good)

Aboriginal rice dumplings (abai) made with purple rice and wrapped in fragrant shell ginger leaves: it's labor intensive and therefore must be ordered in advance. Purple rice is the "more nutritious" twist to this local delicacy, supposedly less heavy on the stomach than glutinous rice. It's filled with tender pork and other goodies.

The rest of the dishes we had were available without advance order:

Taitung Golden chicken (locally raised, free range. Simply prepared but delicious)
Crisp fried cod (ordered this for the kids)
Fried rice and fried noodle (the kids polished off every last bit).
Stir fried cabbage (again simply prepared, but the freshness made it delicious).

We did add an order a soup with day lily (another local specialty), but the kitchen was so busy (two bus loads of tourists there that night plus other customers), they missed the order. But we were full anyway so it didn't matter.

The servers were responsive to our requests (extra bowls for kids, adding dishes to our order... etc) despite the place being so busy, which was nice. But being able to speak some Chinese helps! I don't think too many people there speak English at all. (if you want to dine there and don't know Chinese, take a phrase book or have a friend/concierge write down phrases for you before arrival - and have them pre-order the dishes for you if you want to try them).

If you order from the set menu (also in Chinese, but the numbers at the top are prices and the number of servings in each set), you get rice that comes in a bucket and a rice paddle for you to serve yourselves. We ordered a la carte, so the kids missed out on that experience.

Another local flavor (Taiwanese, not necessarily Taitung) is the Hakka style egg fritata (with pickled vegetables, I think). We didn't order it this time but I've been told it is made "the grandma's way" by my friend.

Also a plus: they take credit cards, which is rare for most farmer's association establishments in Taiwan.

Wow .. This little paradise in the mountains of Beinan is a must stay location if you're looking for the hot springs in the area .. The rooms come with a hot spring bath, the staff are super friendly and helpful, there is a pool to relax by and you're only a 15min drive from the nearby national park. One of the best places we stayed at in Taiwan. Just the breakfast was a little disappointing but then we haven't really found what we were expecting in Taiwan so far anyway.

Three of us stayed here two nights. We loved the unlimited hot springs attached to the hotel! We used it several times. Lockers and showers there too. Restaurant attached has a very nice ( Included ) breakfast. Rate was $2400 ( $80 US) for the three of us! We also toured Zhiben Revreational Forest Park nearby with monkeys, deer, pigs, flowers, butterflies etc. all in all a great stay!

We stayed in the bungalows not the standard rooms. They come with their own hotspring water hot tub. the Rooms were clean as any 5 star hotel, the very large (easily fits two people ;);) hot tub is in a separate section of the room; so not to make the room very humid. the staff ;as usual in Taiwan; is very friendly and helpful although their English is very limited. we stayed for three days the breakfast buffet had different items each day, which were mostly standard Taiwanese breakfast (congee, and several variety of been curds and greens) I also really enjoyed the "cook your own noodle" station. The breakfast also had one or two Western items ( one day there was bacon and scrambled eggs, one day there was ham and fried eggs). the location is pretty good, it is on the other side of the river from the street with most of the hotels and food shops, but it is only a 5-10 min walk across the bridge to get the shops and restaurant area of the city. It is also very close to the forest Park (was closed when I was there :( ) one night we tried their dinner restaurant, it was just OK but very cheap next time I would probably just get some snakes from the many street food carts close to the hotel. the whole area is simply beautiful, very relaxing very intimate.

We stayed at Toyugi Hot Springs the night after we completed a bike ride along the Pacific Coast from Hualien. It was the best part of our three day ride! The hotel rooms feel very luxurious with comfortable beds, slippers, and big bath tubs. The on site restaurant provided simple, but delicious and healthy meals. And the Hot Springs were incredible! There were several pools to hop between - from a covered area with jets, herbal pools, and different temperatures to a beautiful outdoor area with a view of the mountains and river rocks to sit on if we needed a break from the heat. The staff even got us a deal on a taxi that could hold our bikes so we could stay in the hot springs longer!

Will definitely go back if I'm ever in that area of Taiwan again. After biking by several other options, I'm so glad we stayed at Toyugi. It was large enough to have great amenities, but we didn't feel like we were in a mega sky-rise resort in the middle of the beautiful mountains. Strongly recommend.

Yes. Yes. Yes. Ok so I’ll admit I like to wing it when I travel...and I’ve had my fair share of travel fails (read: I travel with three children so it usually involves bodily fluids or scream crying for 30 minutes in a place with no transportation/food/cell service). But this was a total win. We left Taitung and just told the cabbie to bring us to Zhiben. Basically, we got to Zhiben and asked a guy on a scooter where is the hot water and the cabbie crossed the bridge and let us out here!

Play area for kids - check
Water shooters - check
English instructions for the lockers - check
Water massagers - check
Multiple Pools of varied temps - check
Egg Boiling Station - check, check, check.

Notes: There are cameras in the locker section of the changing room to prevent theft. You will need 50NT to use the lockers but you get it back (like with the shopping carts in France). Check out all the sections - they have everything (even steam rooms and saunas and these little beds where water drips on you).

You will need a swim cap (like at ALL hot springs in Taiwan).

Travel Tip: We stayed at the Ming Chang Hotel (知本溫泉-名泉旅遊山莊) which is adorable and so highly recommended, hidden up in the mountains with a view of a waterfall but if you stay at Toyugi you get the spa included :)

We stayed here for 1 night. The room was clean and beautiful design. We walked about 5 mins to the nearby 7-11. The Hot Springs were really huge with indoor and outdoor hot springs available. They even had sauna, steam rooms and swimming pools. Make sure to remember to bring a swimming cap and a swimming costume. We were not informed by our travel agent about the swimming cap, luckily they sell it there as well as swimming costumes at a reasonable price. Their dinner and breakfast was good and healthy. The view of the surrounding area is very beautiful! Their staff was friendly too.

We took a taxi from Kenting to Fangliao ($1200 NT/ 1 hr.) to catch the train to Zhiben, known for its hot springs. Toyugi Hot Springs picked us up from the station for $200 NT. We booked one night at the private bungalow. Even though we had a private hot spring tub, we were glad to experience the public hot spring pools. They require swimming attire and a cap. The facilities are impressive: Pools are clean and well kept. Staffs are friendly and professional. It is also free for hotel guests (vouchers at the front desk). It’s a wonderful place to experience hot spring with children. There are many pools with different temperatures (varies from 40°C to luke warm) and all kinds of whirlpool massage units available. However, the concierge was slow to respond to many situations. Everything seemed to be a hassle to the front desk. In addition, they demanded $200 NT for a late check-out at noon (check-out time is 11:00 am). It took a lengthy discussion with the concierge to waved the fee. The hot spring pools are amazing at Toyugi. There’s definitely room for improvement at the front desk.
