As we arrived on the bus, the hotel looked inviting after a long day of sightseeing.

Our Room #203 a triple with a double bed and a twin bed overlooked the spacious enclosed interior lobby. The room was decorated in light beige color walls with accent matching carpet. The desk, chair, nightstands furniture were light color natural wood creating close relationship with nature. The room was spacious and very comfortable. Too bad we are only stayed one night.

The bathroom was modern with marble walls and floor. Walk-in shower and in-room hot tub.

Spa Paradise:
It was a family place enjoying the exciting atmosphere. It has hot spring slide, hot whirlpool, and ultrasonic bath for everyone in the family. I can still hear the sound of children screaming and laughter from the hot spring slide.

Open Air Spa:
The hotel mineral springs comes directly below ground source bicarbonate spring. Since the perfect spring quality is both colorless and odorless, after bathing the skin is smooth and soft.

Outdoor Evening Show:
The evening show was a song and dance show performance by the local aboriginals. They were very talented. After they show the audience was invited to take pictures with them.

Naruwan Buffet Restaurant
We had both dinner and breakfast buffet at the hotel restaurant. Naruwan offered American, Chinese, Japanese, European, and Taiwanese cuisine - taking the best or favorite dishes of each cuisine and presents as a buffet. The multitude of entrees and side dishes were both vegetarian friendly and vegan options.

With the great service and wonderful food, I felt RELAX AT SPA RESORT ... at Hotel Royal Chihpen.

This is a large, luxurious, but slightly dated spa-type hotel, in a hot-spring area. It is set in a lovely natural environment and offers many facilities to take advantage of the location.

My room was quite handsome with a good bed, two night tables, a desk, a low chair with coffee table, TV, and a room safe. There was no separate chair for the desk so I had to use the coffee table chair which was uncomfortably low. Unusually for a hotel in this class, there were no USB charger outlets. The room was very cold but only a light duvet was provided for the bed, so I and others in my group had an uncomfortably cold night.

The breakfast buffet was extensive but uninspired. I arrived as soon as the buffet opened but found the scrambled eggs completely cold. There were two flasks of filter coffee sitting on a hot plate, but both were luke warm because the hot plate temperature was set too low. At the omelette preparation station, several fried eggs had been prepared and then left on individual plates for anyone who wanted them, which again ensured that the eggs would be at best luke warm.

A supposedly 5 star hotel should not offer guests unheated rooms in uncomfortably cold weather, and it should not serve carelessly prepared breakfast fare.

We love this hotel. We were warned of the sulfur smell in the room but we did not mind as there were many pluses than minuses in this hotel. We love the bath tub, the vanity supplies and the room service availability. It was very nice just to relax in the bath tub, throw in the yukata provided then enjoy their room service afterwards.
The aviary and the zoo were great as well.

This spa hotel is located in Taitung county. Basically it is a Japanese onsen style hotel with indoor and outdoor onsen. The room is spacious with your own private onsen tub in the bathroom. There is a sumptuous buffet spread comprising Western and Taiwanese dishes in the morning. At 2030, there is an aboriginal cultural show in the Amphitheatre of the hotel featuring performers from the Amei tribe. In inclement weather, the performance is held indoors in the hotel lobby which was what happened during my stay. A great hotel with a wonderful hot spring experience.

With high expectations, I brought my daughter and granddaughter back from the United States to stay with relatives. The most disappointing thing was the dinner buffet. Even the best pineapple and watermelon in Taiwan were tasteless, not sweet at all, and it was unpalatable. There were eight of us in the group and none of us could eat these fruits, so I’m not particularly picky. It’s not easy to buy pineapples and watermelons like this in Taiwan. Just buy some fruit at 7 or FamilyMart, it will be far more delicious than this. The person in charge of purchasing deserves a spanking. The balcony and floor-to-ceiling windows of the room on the third floor were in vain, because when the curtains were opened, the building next door was visible, so I had to close the curtains immediately, let alone step out of the balcony. The Laoye Hotel is old!

Excellent facilities and great customer service. There is an open door to the attached balcony where can breath in fresh air and listen to the birds singing. Breakfast and dinner buffet are yummy, plenty food, fruits and drinks. Enjoyed the young artists' performance at night, refreshing, entertained and yet educational. Thumb up to the hotel using profits on local economy and employee education. Only got to stay there for 1 night, but would love to come back.

This is a large full service hotel with large outdoor pool and various hot springs facilities on offer. The lobby is large, the dining room large and uncrowded (there are several 1F restaurant options), and WiFi everywhere. The lounge bar serves (bottled) craft beer. My room was large and very well appointed. Large comfy bed & lots of toiletries. Enjoyed my stay here.

Total relaxation with their hotspring service. The food collection is beyond your imagination. It has all the things you want for a resort. My wife and I had a great time there. One thing though is that it is a little far away from everything else, which can be good or bad :)

Overall this hotel/spa is way over-priced for the value and services that you pay for. If you are going to Chihpen, it is basically for the hot springs or the nearby national forest. Otherwise, there is little reason to come here. This hotel is reportedly the best in the area... but that is not saying much since most of the other choices are weak.

This hotel is quite expensive and a stay here will likely cost as much as or more than a stay at the Singapore Ritz Carlton, Hong Kong Four Seasons, or Taipei Shangri-la. But the service level and quality of the property are more comparable to Holiday Inn someplace in the US.

The best thing about the hotel are the on-site hot springs/onsens. There are 3 in total. Two are Japanese style, and are up to the standards of a high-end Japanese onsen hotel. Both of these onsen are Japanese style single-sex facilities where swim suits are not allowed; one pair is outdoors, and one pair is indoors.

The third onsen is Taiwanese style, meaning co-ed and swim suit required. This one is very large and includes various pools with different flavors, including chamomile, lavender, mint, etc.

There is also a nice large heated swimming pool and kid's pool, archery range, playground (but very dirty). The gym is small and very old with 20 year old equipment. The recreation area also includes a videogame arcade, pool tables, and internet stations. Wi-fi is free throughout the hotel. There is also a nightly dance show by the local aborigine tribes of Taiwan, which is pretty nice and entertaining.

The buffet has a nice large variety, made with excellent local ingredients, but the cooking is very ordinary. The lobby lounge has a limited menu with very weak cooking, and service is very slow as it took nearly half an hour for them to make a club sandwich.

We booked a superior family room (which cost about US$400/night), but it had no balcony and the view was obstructed by shrubs and many telephone wires. The room itself was rather bland, with no wall decorations, or even wallpaper. The lighting was cold flourescent in the bedroom itself. Rooms do come with deep soaking tubs made of stone that fill with hot spring water. However, overall the room seemed a little worn and more 3-4 star like, and not up to the 5 star room rate we paid.

Aside from the hot springs and the pools, all the common areas like the lobby, restaurant, elevators, etc were more 3 star like in appearance and maintenance. The hotel was completed about 18-19 years ago, and from the dated look of things, has not been renovated since it opened.

Service was quite poor overall. We had arranged for a pick up from the train station, but no one showed up with a sign to pick us up. We later found out that it was a "group" pick up with a few other guests in a van, and that they did not bother to wait a couple minutes for us to come out of the station, and so drove off without us. This fiasco resulted in us having to wait for a hotel employee van to pick us up, making additional stops, and delaying our arrival at the hotel by more than an hour. Getting off the van, there was no welcome, and we had to handle our own luggage into the lobby. By the time we arrived, after 2pm, all the restaurants were already closed so we could not have lunch. None of the many staff that we complained to offered any apologies or even any minor compensation.

So, in sum, it is a 3 star stay for a 5 star price. I would only recommend this hotel if you have already decided to go to Chihpen in Taitung County, as there are apparently no better options. But, I think there are better places to holiday than at this hotel in this area, since the Hotel Royal Chihpen does not offer any luxury or value.

From my understanding, some (but not all) of the facilities are available to the general public for a small fee, however best to email ahead and ask them about which facilities you were hoping to access. I'm basing this information on the fact that I recall seeing them selling gift vouchers for spa usage, so one would assume that this is intended for the general public since hotel guests have full access.
