I was touring Taiwan with my family and Taitung was just a town we arrived one evening to spend the night there so the location of the hotel was not too important. But looking at the reviews and the map, we chose MATA Taiwan Indigenous Cultural Resort because it was next to the Taitung Forest Park. As bird photography is my hobby, I planned to take an advantage of the location early next morning.
MATA is quite a large hotel with free parking on the street outside (there were plenty of free spaces). Hotel staff was very attentive and we can give the highest marks to all the employees we had a pleasure to deal with. Receptionists spoke good English.
The room was very spacious, clean and with an interesting interior. It was dead quiet at night and the breakfast buffet was abundant and tasty. Although we spent there only one night, I can highly recommend the place. We would definitely stay there again if ever in Taitung.
Oh, and the photo trip next morning was also very productive - I saw and took nice photos of many different species. The park even has couple of hides where you can observe the nature without interfering with it.

Was very pleased with this hotel. Staff very friendly on arrival and we even got an upgrade for no extra cost due to low occupancy. Nicely situated for easy (walking) access to the city centre and it's attractions

I stayed at this hotel with some friends for new years eve 2016/2017. It was really great! I loved the unique interior design and friendly staff. The breakfast we received was really god and different from what I am used to as well making it a cool experience. We also borrowed bicycles from the hotel and went down town to do sightseeing. I would recommend this hotel to everyone. I would also recommend spending new years eve in Taitung if you want something different.

This is a good reasonably priced hotel that has an aboriginal theme such as tall carved wooden statues encircling a grass performance ring out front (apparently, they host performances at other times of the year). There is also an authentic aboriginal canoe boat at the entrance to the hotel. The hotel guest rooms were clean, comfortable and small but adequate. Each room is air conditoned which made sleep that much better (it is definitely hot and very humid in Taitung in the summer). If you're a westerner be sure to request a room with bed that has a matress instead of a just a quilt on a hard surface. Otherwise, you might be in for a surprise. The bathroom was clean with a sit-down commode, sink, and shower. Overall, the hotel could use some updating, but the price was reasonable for a great clean very adequate room. The front staff were friendly and spoke limited English (not so much at night). There is no restaurant on site, but there are eating places within walking distance. There is a large aboriginal gift shop in the hotel (with soft drinks for sale), but the souvenirs are quite expensive for the hand-made items. Behind the hotel (out the back door) you can see artisan aboriginies making crafts. There is a bicycle rental shop next door. Be sure to take advantage of the beautiful Forest Park across the street which is right on the shore of the Pacific Ocean. There are plenty of paved walking/bicycling trails in the park that go through the park and down to the ocean.

The location is near with TaiTung Forest Park, they provides free bi-cycles,but, not much stock, you need to reserve it before they lend out all bi-cycle. It is good location to visit TaiTung Forest Park.
However, that location is far from Night Market, and Central, You need spend 25 minutes walking from Hotel to TaiTung Night Market, and going to rail station by Taxi (Not Walking Distance).

Value for the money. Next to the park which you can have a morning run or walk when you stay here. Nice and delicious breakfast. But there is too noisy and annoying thing was the air craft fly thru non stop on the morning.

We stayed in Mata for the two nights we were in Taitung. Very easy to access and close to the center of town. The hotel is an indigenous cultural resort and also an eco-friendly one. The room was spacious and light, the area was quiet and the bed very comfortable after long days exploring the area. Breakfast was cooked to order, simple, healthy and tasty. The coffee was freshly brewed as well. Highly recommended!

Mata gave us more than we expected for our stay! The location is right across Taitung Forest Park and its free bicycle rental provided our family a wonder trip around the park. Also Mata is an eco-friendly hotel(no packaged shampoo, lotion, bottle water...)There's water station on all levels for filling up either cold, warm, or hot water. Their huge lobby is welcoming and great for reading or enjoy their free night shows. Mata is also away from the crowded area(approximately 15 minutes walk to major streets) ...inconvenient for some people yet provided a relaxation stay for our family!

Great ambience and creative presentation of culture and comfort. Must see and support minorities enjoy outstanding dinner show. Cheap prices yet priceless fun. Located near Forest Park and center of town, convenient bus access and bicycle for free.
