The hotel offers free bikes and we took a couple out on the City's 20km bike loop from the old railway station. This is highly recommended- you ride along the old rail line, past paddy fields, canals, a bizarre water irrigation park and end up in the big forest park next to the hotel. There was a minor typhoon on the day we took the trail, and there were some diversions causing a missed trail near the baseball stadium and some close encounters with feral dogs but we thoroughly enjoyed the ride!
At night the hotel is a 5 minute walk from Uncle Pete's pizzas and we were treated to the American owner,an 18 year resident of Taitung, playing bluegrass on his fiddle- great food too! He also directed us to Kasa cafe, a nice bar in town.
Back at the hotel, we slept well until around 8am when the hotel began to be buzzed by a couple of fighter jets who flew over the building a number of times which was quite disconcerting! Breakfast was included and was the usual Chinese buffet fare with no Western options except toast- the Chinese food looked to be a good range though not my choice for breakfast. Bizarrely the hotel has no bar and serves no alcohol . (Not that I wanted any for breakfast though!)
I had low expectations of Taitung after reading the Lonely Planet but I liked the town- I much preferred it to Kaohsiung which I felt was over rated. This hotel isn't the most central but it's in a nice location, easy to find and away from heavy traffic with sea views and a 15 minute walk to the centre of town.A nice room and reasonable rates too.
The impression when entering the lobby was so so.
Nice touch to offer coffey, juice and some bread free of charge.
The room however was on a 4 star level. Fresh, clean and with everything you need.
Excellent King size bed. The Air condition was effective and silen.
Chinese breakfast with few options for us used to swedish hotel breafasts.
Overall a pleasant stay that we rate 3+
Clean spacious room facing the Flowing Lake (Pipa lake) with mountains and partial sea view.
Linens are new, beds are comfy but towels are beginning to show their age. No tub in the toilet but water temperature and pressure are all fine. No toiletries provided. Please bring your own.
Location:
Located at a corner of town, it’s close to the Seashore Park, Flowing Lake and Forest Park.
Hotel provides free bicycles (both single and duo riders). Hotel also provide free rain coats when we needed them.
Because of its location, we rode to the the seaside frequently. We also rode to Tiehua village and all around town. It’s a short 5min walk to Siwei night market (opens sundays only). Other than that, it’s pretty quiet and most probably need a 10-15mins walk to other eateries and 7-11 which was okay for us.
Others:
We enjoyed the breakfast very much. Yummy porridge with all kinds of condiments. Bread and toasts, fruits, salads, noodles. Simple and tasty.
Complimentary use of washing machine but chargeable for dryers.
All the staff we met were very polite and ready to help.
How to get there?
Hotel offered complimentary pickup from Taitung Tra station, but must give advance notice. 12mins drive away from the station.
Nt$200 by taxi.
If without luggage , a cheaper option is via shuttle bus from Taitung Tra station (check with visitor centre just outside the station for the bus no.) and alight at Forest Park bus stop and walk another abt 500meters.
Extra:
Hotel helped us to arrange a day trip to the east coast all the way to Sanxianxia. They also have different day trips on different days (check their website).
Ok, that’s all I can remember. Hope these help you in your holiday planning.
Overall, our stay was pleasant but I would like to point out one point to improve: The food. Our month-long trip gave us tons of opportunity to try different restaurants food, the one at this hotel was not the greatest (Thank God not the worst). The cafeteria was spacious and well organised but the breakfast served was not very impressive. Maybe for the Chinese style breakfast was a fine selection of dishes. For us visiting from overseas, however, eggs and bacon (ok, we accept just ham then) should not too hard to find/make, right?
Oh, well. If we plan to visit back Taitung, we definitely consider going back to this hotel.
